The Caps are almost there, they just need a goalie. I wonder if it would be worth Burkes time to approach Giggy and the the Caps about a deal?

    @ Amoroq:
The famous words “I won’t approch a player and ask him to waive his NTC”….if JSG didn’t have one I still doubt they would do it. Volkun was avalible this year @5.7 and was said to be too much remember. Oh well. I would rather keep him because he and Gustavsson should be good next year

I imagine Reimer and Rynnas end up starting the season on the Marlies (AHL), with Scrivens and Engelege beginning the year in Reading (ECHL). Although if Scrivens shows enough in camp, he may get loaned to another AHL team to further his development at that level.
    .
Alternatively, the Leafs may elect to leave him in the ECHL, so that he would be available to the Marlies should the Leafs decide to trade Reimer (as speculation as abounded).
    .
Either way, the situation is a good one. Depth is important to have at every position, but none moreso than goaltending.

Why trade Reimer? Is he the weakest of the three?

Didn’t the Leafs learn from their mistake of trading a goalie before they could see how valuable he was? Had the Leafs given Rask some time, they would’ve seen he was the better goalie rather than just deciding that Pogge would be their future.

i hope the leafs don’t trade reimer, i can see him as their backup next year. i’ve heard rynnas is pretty raw, so he may need a 2nd year in the AHL.

    Satisfying everyone’s Semin dislike:
    -
To WSH: Kaberle, Hayes, Blacker, 2nd in 2011
    To TOR: Semin, Carlson
    -
    To ANA: Semin
To TOR: B.Ryan (younger, and cheaper than Semin)
    -
Don’t forget that the Caps are also probably the front-runners to land Anton Volchenkov in free agency. You know he wants to join his Russian buddies. With Green, Kaberle, Volchenkov and Schutlz, they could easily part with Carlson. Also, I said this in yesterday’s thread also, but a lot of you are getting really carried away with Carlson. He looks solid, but so many guys are flash-in-the-pan at this point in there careers. Not a year ago people were saying the same things about Alzner, and now he almost forgotten.

No way washington or Anaheim make those trades, keep dreaming. Would be nice though.

Cameron, not really seeing the logic in why Anaheim would do a trade like that. As you pointed out, Ryan is cheaper and younger.
    -
I never usually comment or speculate on deals on here, yet I can’t help thinking a deal set up like this might get done:
    -
    Fehr, Carlson, Nylander, 1st
    -
    for
    -
    Kaberle, Reimer
    -
Kinda helps both teams out without doing too much damage to either. We can bury salary if necessary, so there is actually cap relief for both sides.

Id take Semin for Kaberle in a heartbeat. Semin and Kulemin would look pretty good with either Kadri or Bozak centering them for a long time.

I dont want Dave Nonis to leave just yet. Stick around and enjoy the party.

Well, we already know that Semin is on the table for the Leafs, and Ryan doesn’t want to resign in Anaheim, and his agent has already said that if he DOES resign, it will be a contract that brings him to his UFA. Doesn’t sound like the guy wants to stay in Anaheim to me. So, lose Ryan for picks on an offer-sheet, or trade him for Semin? Good deal for Anaheim. Saves them a lot of hassle.. And like I said, Bob McKenzie has already said Semin is likely on the table for a Leafs defensemen (refuted the fact that he mentioned Kaberle). So how far fetched is it really?

    @ Cameron

In McKenzie’s twitter account it says it wasn’t him, someone made it up. Seems like it’s all speculation in regards to Kabs for Semin.

    @ Cameron

Still doesn’t make sense to me. Even if Ryan only signs a contract long enough to get him to UFA status, that means he is signed for at least 2-3 more years at (arguably) a cheaper cap hit than what Semin currently is. To me, that just defies logic. If you’re gonna pay up to $6 million to anyone, you pay it to Ryan and not to Semin.
    -
Even having said that, keep in mind that Semin is UFA after this upcoming season, and they will get far less of a return for Semin than the offer-sheet picks for Ryan at the deadline. Anaheim would just match up to $6 Million (Semin’s salary anyway), or if the offer sheet was more – then they take the Kessel package (2 1st’s, a 2nd, and a 3rd).

I was actually trying to explain a point similar to yours to my buddy at the Jays game last night. JFjr was a tool, but he was an assistant gm who was upjumped far above his station to take over in Toronto, and really had no efficacy during his tenure. Not dissimilar to Medvedev and Putin with Russian leadership (except far fewer Russian dissidents were killed during the Ferguson era).

    @ ingy56:
Yes I agree with your analysis of JFJ and the impossible situation he found himself in. I think you place the blame where it belongs. He was probably not ready for that job and when he got it he did not have the necessary support to do it properly (even if he was ready). Who knows what he was capable of? The Machiavellian machinations of the employers negated any possibility of that. I should just stop bashing the poor man as you rightly point out. It is just that I think that probably even the most casual fans probably spotted those trades as horrible right off the bat. What really sickened me at the time was the kowtowing by the scouting department in support of obvious stupidity. Yet as I also try to point out, JFJ drafted very well, which is helping now at least. I still resent having had to watch the self-destruction of that period. But of course you are right, he has been made the scapegoat for the real culprits.

@Ingy; @Skading: damn right Peddie & Tannenbaum were behind this mess. Meddling has been the way of MLSE for decades. Now there is far less, and look at the results when you have a seasoned hockey-mind in the driver seat.

    @ danvertising:
Thank you for that information, I know next to nothing about the scouting deparment. However, something has been going very well in the later rounds. I imagine, like me, a number of fans would like to know exactly what. If this is all stemming from Dave Morrison maybe MLHS should put him under a magnifying glass (preferably before the draft).
