    @ Charlie:
Yah I was trying to focus on the amount of depth our scouting department has been able to grab in later rounds, outside of the 1st.
    .
Obviously not all prospects will pan out. But those are the ones who jumped out at me as being potential impact players later down the line. With that many.. surely a few of them will (or already have, in Kulemin/Gunnarsson’s case) be a big part of the future.

Turns out Montreal plays Pittsburgh tomorrow night. Can’t wait to see all their spirits sink down the drain after Crosby and Stall make easy work of the smurfs. Pay attention to Pittsburghs third line. They’ll be doing a lot of damage this series.

Thank you for that information, I know next to nothing about the scouting deparment. However, something has been going very well in the later rounds. I imagine, like me, a number of fans would like to know exactly what. If this is all stemming from Dave Morrison maybe MLHS should put him under a magnifying glass (preferably before the draft).

    Hey Skadlig,

I’ve interviewed Morrison multiple times – a couple for the site and once for the Maple Leafs Annual – and I believe it was in the Annual that I asked him who makes the call at the draft table. Morrison said it is he and his staff. Of course he runs it by the GM, provides reasoning and it is the GM who ultimately must approve, but it’s really Morrison, operating under his own assessments and the consensus with his other scouts, who is making the call. I don’t know if you grabbed an annual or not but we delve pretty deep into the year-long process behind scouting for the draft, as well as touch on every major Leaf prospect.

    @ Cameron:

Remember that Ryan receiving an offer sheet from another team does not guarantee he is gone. Anaheim can – and will – match unless the amount is completely outrageous. And if the amount is that outrageous, they can always take the picks. Ryan does not hold the cards here….Anaheim has cap space – and even if they exceed their internal cap, they can move others out to make the numbers work. Don’t forget that they have Blake, he is counting for $4 million against their cap, yet he is only being paid $3 million each of the next 2 seasons.
    -
Realistically – if Anaheim can’t match an offer sheet for Ryan, then how would they be able to afford Semin?

I personally think that Ryan will be gone from Anaheim. They have over 30 million tied into six players (Getzlaff, Perry, Visnovsky, Hiller, Blake and Lupul) and with Niedermeyer not likely to return Kaberle looks more appealing to them. I could see a trade where Leafs will trade Kaberle, Grabovsky and a pick or Reimer (due to no depth behind Hiller) for the rights to Bobby Ryan. Burke even said he will be targeting cap pressed teams this summer and Anaheim is one of those teams. Sure Kaberle and Grabovsky makes around 7 million together and Ryan will probably sign for 6 million, but Anaheim gets two players for the price of one, a goalie prospect and a cheaper replacement for Niedermeyer. It makes sense! Hopefully they can also get either Burish, Byfuglien or Bolland from Chicago another cap pressed team.

    Kulemin/Bozak/Kessel
    Stalberg/Kadri/Ryan
Caputi/Bolland or free agent/Byfuglien or Burish
    Orr/Mitchell/Sjostrom

    Phaneuf/Gunnarson
    Schenn/Beauchemin
    Komisarek/Aulie
    Van Ryn

    Gustavsson/Giguere

    Traded or bought out:
    Kaberle
    Grabovsky
    Reimer
    Finger

It’s quite simple really – you front-load the offer sheet with two 10 million dollar seasons. Game over. They cannot afford to match that. Semin is only 6 million, and could be traded at their leisure instead of being strong-armed into a deal to prevent an offer sheet. Makes a ton of sense really.

    BlueandWHITE

you have to consider that a lot of the times semin played with backstrom and ovechkin
you also have to consider his production in the playoffs and the amount of money he’s gonna be wanting when he’s a free agent….is he someone you want to bring in for that money

not saying i dont want him…just things to consider

and why are you comparing him to kessel ??? its pointless….kessel is 22, semin is 26 ….this is semins first year cracking 40….kessel almost cracked it last year and certainly would have if it wasn’t for his injury.

    @ Cameron:

I don’t think so. No one is going to give Bobby Ryan a contract where the first 2 years are $10 million. However, even in the unlikely scenario that someone does that, unless the total cap hit exceeds $6 million per season, they will undoubtedly match it. And $6 million is more than anyone would pay right now for Ryan. I’ll give you a first hand example – Buffalo had an internal cap, and matched on Vanek ($10 m and $8 m the first 2 years) even though they absolutely could not afford it.

    @ Alec Brownscombe:
Thank you for reminding me. Yes I did read that article in the Annual and I do recall understanding those dynamics — hierarchy ultimately deferring to scouts on the ground headed up by Morrison arriving at a consensus with others. The reason I did not make the connection is because it is only after the emergence of a number of draftees this year that I began to realize that the drafting had been good. I had assumed under JFJ that it would be mediocre to bad, but by now it has become clear that it was at least good and more likely, very good to excellent. Hopefully Brian Burke is allowing this culture/process to continue and not allowing his presence interfere with Morrison’s deft touch.

man, they can’t afford to match it. bob murray has said the most he wants to pay him is 4.5 million, because that’s really the most the club can afford. everyone alludes to all this cap space the ducks have, but they also have no players signed. if they signed ryan at 6 million, they’d have 37 million committed to just 9 players, and would still have to sign 6 defensemen, and 6 forwards. they have no checking line, and very few prospects that are ready to make the jump. if ryan is staying in anaheim, it will be for a discount, which is exactly why he will be gone.
    -
if all it took was slamming the ducks with a heavily front-loaded offer sheet like that, and really, that’s all it’s going to take, then tons of teams would be willing to do it, most notably, teams that are bound to be drafting in the bottom 3rd (san jose, los angeles, vancouver, etc…).
    -
    Year 1 – 10 million
    Year 2 – 8 million
    Year 3 – 6 million
    Year 4 – 3 million
    Year 5 – 3 million
    -
They can’t match that. And even if they somehow could, moving Lupul and Blake are going to be next to impossible, Ryan would be making more than Getzlaf and Perry (who are both far superior to him), and they’d still have a ton of players to resign.

Also, that Buffalo example is perfect, thank you for proving my point. Every team that has just let the player go has won offer sheet transactions. You don’t think Buffalo would rather have Colten Teubert, Magnus Paarjarvi Svensson, Derek Stepan AND Evgeni Grachev instead of Vanek?

No, they can’t afford him at 10 and 8 million, which is why you front-load the deal. And like I already said, you take Semin because he’s a player of greater value that’s already signed. If they like him, they can keep him for about 6 million, or they can trade him off at next year’s deadline for a return far greater than what they would get if they let Ryan go this summer. They get options by taking Semin, whereas they could get strong-armed into a deal in the summer with Ryan.
    -
Another reason they take Semin over the picks is because the next draft is apparently just crap. The last few drafts have been very strong, and so GMs were not, or should not have been so apprehensive about letting players go for a handfull of picks. However, if you end up with a team like San Jose putting in an offer-sheet, and taking back late round picks in a terrible draft, you clearly lost. Taking Semin avoids all question marks. And you’re hung up on this one year deal thing for Semin. Look at the return Kovalchuk and Kessel got. Semin is somewhere in the middle of the two, so if they don’t like him, the deadline return would be massive.
    -
Thing is, Ryan has all the control in this situation, and by swapping him for Semin, they get all the control back. They have to pay a little more than they want for a few months, but it would ultmately be far better than losing Ryan for late round picks in this draft. I guess the Buffalo argument wasn’t as sound, because it’s a completely different scenario.

Here is an interesting list of some past college goalies, particularly see Ryan Miller and Jimmy Howard.

    http://www.insidecollegehockey.com/6History/ncaarec_indgoalseas.htm

As compared to Scrivens last 3 years GAA average in 1.85 area and Save % 9.30 area.

Looks pretty good, wish he was signed for more than 1 year though , was that similar to Monster in that we could only do a 1 year?
