Kadri on the Wing?

Nazem Kadri is ranked fourth overall in points in the Ontario Hockey League playoffs.

It has a nice ring to it when you take into consideration he was eliminated in the second-round by his ex-team, the Kitchener Rangers. Kadri compiled an impressive 9 goals and 27 points in 12 playoff games, giving him the highest points-per-game average among playoff competitors during the 2010 OHL post-season.

However, that doesn’t mean his future in the National Hockey League for next season is solidified. Not even close, actually. Fact remains that plenty of promising prospects have fell by the wayside and spoiled untapped potential, and that the manner in which an NHL club handles the transition of a prospect into the big leagues remains of paramount importance in the successful development of a promising up-and-comer into a consistent NHL contributor, especially in a hotbed like Toronto.

Will that be the case with Kadri? I’d bet money it won’t be, but any jackass can simply bring up the curious case of Alexander Daigle if they want to argue otherwise.

Pertaining to the topic at hand, I’m predicting along with the majority that Kadri will indeed don the Maple Leafs‘ sweater for the 2010-11 campaign and onward.

As all Leafs fans know, it’s not just his offensive flair that makes Kadri such a highly-touted prospect. It’s his willingness to throw the body, drop the gloves or kill penalties despite his small frame that makes him ready. He has the heart of the lion, to put it simply, and he’s the character of player the Leafs are in desperate need of moving forward into playoff contention.

Of course, an ongoing concern is whether or not he will add the necessary weight to withstand the rigors of the NHL right off the bat. If he manages to apply his aggressive game, it’s unlikely he’d endure the 82-game schedule without experiencing periods of fatigue if not worse. Logic dictates that if he does add some pounds, it’s likely he’d still endure some hardships in his first season in the big league, akin to most NHL rookies

I’m admittedly guilty of putting the cart ahead of the horse a bit here, and it should be emphasized by the coaching staff that Kadri has to earn his way into a roster spot like anyone else, but it leads me to wonder how the coaching staff can best position Kadri in the line-up to assure he’s in a position to transition successfully. Some have him etched in as the secondary center to Tyler Bozak. No question, it’s a plausible scenario, but how about playing Kadri on the wing? Strength is an important component to be effective at the center position, and Kadri may struggle in that regard as he matures physically and makes the strength adjustment to the NHL.

Not only that, but if GM Brian Burke wants to acquire a big center in the off-season, it would make sense to put Kadri on the wing for a couple of reasons other than what I mentioned above.

Bozak can play center on the second-line and leave the No.1 position to whoever the mystery man may be. Should the Leafs acquire a big center (perhaps via trade by unloading Tomas Kaberle), I think it’d be a perfect scenario for Kadri. He can play with someone who can make room on the ice and let Kadri employ his offensive game, one of finesse and speed. As the experience mounts, he can find his comfort zone and slowly begin to match-up against the league’s top defensemen. Throwing the 19-year-old in the fire right from the get-go is an unnecessary risk. There’s no need to put him on a pedestal at this stage in his development.  This works in the Leafs’ favour as well. They’d upgrade down the middle and still have Kadri patrolling the opponents end in top minutes, instead of having two inexperienced, at times inconsistent players heading up the roster at center. Sure, it’d be fun to watch, but there would be more of those frustrating nights we saw last season as a natural consequence of having youth heavily leading the charge.

If he has another impressive training camp, he will undoubtedly find himself on the Leafs’ top-six—moreso because of the fact that it’s extremely bare. But that doesn’t mean he should be one of the primary scorers and be counted on to put up huge numbers. He needs to gain as much experience as possible and learn how to be effective at the NHL level. Again, as other Leafs bloggers have mentioned, adding some veterans to the mix and more particularly Kadri’s line might aid the acclimation in this regard.

In Leafs Nation, we are admittedly occasionally guilty of placing unrealistic expectations on prospects and their potential. But in the case of Kadri, patience is key. He’s a potential number one center who can play at both ends of the rink and display a ton of heart. As always, we cannot screw this up by acting like a 13-year-old boy finding a stash of dirty magazines—OK, I’m not quite sure if that made sense, but you catch my drift.

Interesting Kadri stats:

In his first three seasons in the OHL, Kadri compiled 118 PIMs. In the 2009-10 season, he racked up 105 PIMs alone.

Without a hitch Kadri steadily increased his point totals every season in the OHL —from 22, to 65, to 78 to 93 points.

Kadri’s OHL playoff points-per-game average is more productive than the likes of Steven Stamkos, John Tavares, Bobby Ryan, Matt Duchene and others. Just sayin’.

You stay classy, MLHS.

Because you can only pray those 2 come into the league and score mutiple 40 goal seasons like Semin already has.

    @ dawriter67:
McKenzie actually used to be a Leafs fan. He claims his job requires him to be neutral therefore he doesn’t cheer for anyone anymore, not even Toronto.
    .
Like most sports reporters in Toronto though, in an attempt to be neutral and hide their natural blue and white colours, they often end up coming across anti-Leafs.

Makes sense though…MaKenzie doesn’t seem to be anti-leaf but Berger comes off as an anti-leaf fan – he’s an a-shole calling us sheep – what a dick – montreal has sheep – the Bills have sheep – I don’t get why Berger accuses MLSE of putting lousy teams on the ice when we just go – we can’t help it – we just love the game itself. What a dick.

    @Jordan
It doesn’t make sense that MaKenzie would say one thing on a huge sports radio station that everyone on half of Canada listens to and then turn around and deny it on the internet where most of Canada is reading. That type of stuff kills credibility which is a career killer for someone who makes a living as a sports insider.

    @ Jordan:
That rumour started on the hfboards; McKenzie never said it. Think of all the archived radio shows that can be found online and no one can dig up audio of the story. There’s no way he subtly drops that back by the deadline and none of the MLHS bloggers or any of the other barilkosphere picks it up. Him reporting that deal never existed.

I don’t think we really need Semin. He is a replica of Kessel, and as much of a defensive liability. We need defensively conscious power forwards like Getzlaf, Iginla…
    -
We should expect our youngsters to struggle next year, with the combination of heightened expectations, being prone to turnovers and the sophomore jinx. There’s a reason slower, less youthful veterans are still around. They are savvy and understand the nuances of the game.
    -
Therefore we need some veterans (Niedermayer, Bertuzzi, Torres) sprinkled in with some youngsters (Kadri, Stalberg, Bozak)

I don’t know about any of the FA’s this year other than Armstrong. Kinda seems like they’ll all be over priced. Don’t get me wrong, Kovy is good and so is Marleau but both have been playoff busts and that’s what it’s all about isn’t it? What’s the point of winning the presidents trophy if you’re out in the first round?
We need some tough talented top line guys who can produce in the post season. If there are none available this year as FA’s then we until they are or we trade for them. Why waste 6-8 mil in cap space long term just to make the post season next year. Why not wait until the 2011 FA crop comes up where there are a whole ton of great players availble. That all I’m sayin’

Semin in no way is the same mould as kessel, the only similarity is the hard shot. Semin has better hands, and can dangle an entire teams offense for 2 minutes, then end up with a goal. Kessel relies on recieving a pass after his teammates hard work before he snipes, or a nice pass off the rush (which isnt a bad thing, hes a pure snipe). Kessel is a counter attack/high guy sniper, Semin is a make u look like a fool in ur own zone, t-drag dangle through ur center and dman, loop around the top of the circle, dish the puck or toss a dirty snipe upstairs on Elliot type of player ;) .

either way tho: Semin + Kessel both = Sens killers which is always fine with me.

    @ Ksavz:
Good points, but they are similar in the sense that they’re presently one dimensional players on the wing and who are and play small.

I was going to say that we still don’t need him, but im reconsidering:
-Semin and Kessel would have to be split up, for obvious reasons.
-Bozak has shown great chemistry with Kessel, yet people dont want him as a first line centre. Solution: Bozak is now second line centre to one of Grabovski (Belarussia?), Kadri, Mitchell, FA, Trade.
-This way you can sprinkle Stalberg, Kulemin, Armstrong, Frolov among the remaining spots with Caputi, Hanson and Mitchell playing elsewhere.

    Stalberg-Grabovksi-Semin
    Kulemin-Bozak-Kessel
    Frolov-Kadri-Armstrong
    Sjostrom-Mitchell-Orr

    Phaneuf-Schenn
    Beauchemin-Niedermayer
    Komisarek-Gunnarson

Maybe will be tweaked for offence but D is solid as Beauchemin gets paired with his Batman

    Classy article Ron.
With regards to Kadri, I think we keep him where he is comfortable, at centre. I think size is needed more on the wing anyway. Also I think Bozak and Kadri play on our top two lines, with Grabovski playing centre on the third line. Grabovski may play the most minutes on some nights but he would be in a third line role with a couple of two way wingers with size. Grabovski will add the depth needed to support Kadri and Bozak. Our need is to add a couple of wingers.
Regarding Semin, I have no idea if he will become available this off season, but he is an UFA next summer. To me if we have a chance to get this guy without a steep price in talent, absolutely yes. He is a very talented RWer. I actually didn’t think he played poorly against the habs. If you watched game seven, nobody had better scoring chances than him. Semin would be a perfect fit for this team.
Semin, Kessel, Kadri, Bozak, Kulemin, Grabovski, Stalberg, Hanson, Sjostrum, Torres, Orr.

    @ B Leaf:
You only listed 11 forwards, who would be the other one?
Also, I think Kadri is comfortable at all 3 forward postions and would love to see a big center brought in to play on the top line, with Bozak and Grabovski behind him as the 2nd and 3rd line centers.

    @ Schenn:
Not sure who the other forward would be at this time, because we are not entirely sure of what is available and at what cost. I can see Kadri playing wing, but I think it is best to bring rookies in doing what they do best. I would throw Kadri into a somewhat significant role right away. As a number two centre with Bozak ahead of him and Grabovski behind him he shouldn’t have too much pressure. Two years ago at this time he was ranked ahead of Duchsene and quite frankly he hasn’t done anything to discredit that in my opinion. Kadri needs to play the powerplay alot, that is where he is at his best and that is where we need him down low on the right side in his office. If he is second line centre we can get him the PP minutes.

If a big top line center is brought in during the offseason, I wouldn’t be against putting Grabovski on the wing on one of the top two lines with Kadri playing center on the third line behind Bozak, as long as he was getting plenty of ice-time.
    .
You could also put him on the point of the first PP unit.
    Regular lines:
    Grabovski – Marleau – ???????
    Kulemin – Bozak – Kessel
    Stalberg – Kadri – Sjostrom
    Caput/Torres – Hanson/Mitchell – Orr
    .
    PP Units:
    Grabovski – Marleau – Kessel
    Kadri – Phaneuf
    Kulemin – Bozak – ?????
    Gunnarsson – Beauchemin
