Bits & Pieces – May 9th

Note: With the playoffs being the focus of the hockey world right now, there isn’t a whole lot of big stories breaking in Leafland these days. As such, I’ll be helping out Alec with his “Bits & Pieces” articles, touching briefly on various topics, and providing the occasional draft primer for the Entry Draft this coming June.

This session’s topics include the Phoenix Coyotes, Mike Komisarek and 2010 draft prospect Joey Hishon.

The Toronto Star reported a few days ago that another Phoenix Coyotes sale has blown up, and that the likelihood of Winnipeg reclaiming the team is increasing day by day. I don’t really know where I stand on the whole issue. Obviously it’d be fantastic to have another team in Canada, but imagine what it’d feel like to be a Yotes’ fan and to have a team and sport you love ripped away from you.

.

On that note: let’s say hypothetically that the team was being targeted by Jim Balsille to be placed in Hamilton instead. If you you’re a Hamilton native, are you more excited at the notion of adding the Coyotes franchise or the Predators? Phoenix is the upstart top 4 seed with a great young core, with 6th overall pick Oliver Ekman-Larsson still waiting in the wings, and armed with a pair of 1st round picks. On the other hand, Nashville is poised to ice the league’s most fearsome defensive corps over the next few seasons with the likes of Weber, Suter, Franson, Blum and Ellis roaming their blueline. Tough choice.

.

The St. Petersburgh Times reports that Pierre Mcguire may have been contacted regarding Tampa Bay’s vacant GM position. How awesome would that be?

.

Mike Komisarek is the Maple Leafs‘ King Clancy Memorial Trophy nominee, which is awarded to the player who best exemplifies leadership on and off the ice and has made a noteworthy contribution to the community. The Leafs’ website has the details on some of Mike’s community involvement during his time here in Toronto. Good for him. Class and character off the ice is just as important off the ice as it is on it.

.

Draft Primer: Joey Hishon – Centre, Owen Sound Attack

Strengths: Hishon really possesses the entire package you want in a hockey player. He presents a nice array of offensive skills highlighted by a very good shot and the ability to create chances on the rush. His effectiveness in open ice is accentuated by his excellent speed and ability to evade hits. Joey’s also a tenacious player who plays with great passion and does a solid job at both ends of the ice. He really burst onto the scene with a fantastic U-18 tournament last season (don’t sleep on this – see Jerry D’Amigo).

Weaknesses: Despite playing with a big heart, he unfortunately also plays with a small frame. Hishon is only 5’11 163 lbs, and could have a tough time against bigger, stronger defenders at the NHL level. He could be a few years away from being a full-time contributor. There’s also some concern regarding the fact that he did not take a step forward from last season’s offensive breakout campaign, but the upside is there.

Long-Term Upside: Hishon’s a good player and he really offers everything you want in a potential draft pick. He’s got a shot at becoming top six forward who is versatile and can play in multiple situations. He doesn’t take shifts off,  is a defensively responsible player, and is one of  those guys you just have to have on a contending team.

Draft Day: Hishon’s currently ranked 55th overall amongst N.A skaters by Central Scouting. Some team is going to look at the fact that he was billed as as a potential top 10 pick only 10 months ago, and will call his name a lot earlier than that on draft day. Somebody’s going to take a gamble that this was just a down year, and they’re going to be pleasantly surprised. Anywhere after the mid 2nd round and you’ve got a steal. Let’s hope Burkie can grab a pick to steal this kid.

How awesome would it be if Mcguire got that job! We wouldn’t have to endure his useless annoying commentary during every TSN brodcast anymore!

Please keep in mind that Stalberg was in his rookie year as a pro. Let’s at least give him at least one more full season before declaring him a total bust who is only worthy of Drew Stafford and his 4 years of declining production as a pro.
    .
With only a single 20 goal scorer on the entire roster at this point, why anyone would want to trade a player who has demonstrated the potential to score 20+ goals after his rookie season as a pro is a mystery to me.
    .
The Jays middle relief is a glaring weakness this year….it sucks.

    @ Cameron:
`we cant tank next year either propects are good and all but I wanna win as well so a couple short term free agents are not a bad idea maybe bergeron is not the best option but he is an effective PP guy ellis and blum are not gonna help much next season

Agreed. We HAVE to keep stalberg. Everyone knows I don’t like him as much as most but there is absolutely zero sense giving him up. He’s not worth much to other teams but the risk is farrrrr too much.

    @ Jordan:

Exactly – if we trade him after his rookie season and he lights it up somewhere else, the Leafs will look dumb for trading away a legit top-6 for scraps. Mitchell gets year after year to prove himself, let’s at least give Stalberg the same benefit of the doubt. It’s low-risk to keep him – it’s not like he has a huge cap hit.

I agree but no way in hell Stalberg can ever be referred to as a “bust” . loll, he was a 6th round pick, he already qualifies for a success as most 6th rounders dont even get a sniff of nhl time let alone the bubble for the 2nd and 3rd lines. Definitely a late bloomer, not all players run under the same time line of development, especially bigger players like stalberg, as it takes time to fully fill out and adapt to being able to use that size to his advantage.

The only way Bozak isnt worth his cap hit is if the CBA isnt extended and he either does not improve at all or regresses. he was scoring at a 60 point pace as a rookie after coming off both a knee injury and swine flu. All signs point to him being able to improve to the point where at the very least his cap hit is a slight too much

Agreed. He shown he has potential, so give him time to see if he can develop into a top-6.

havent read beyond this page, but im wondering, how sick was Shogun last night Jordan? i know u watched ;) . Shogun has the sickest style in the UFC, so underrated due to his injury riddled past, get used to that shiett. I honestly think he can get inside the reach of a.silva or rampage. Both will make for sick fights tho. (sorry to get off topic leafs nation ;) )

Baseball should just shorten there season a bit and move to a hockey style playoff. This would really help suffering teams increase there fan base. If the jays were to make the post season the dome would start getting filled. I’m really surprised baseball haven’t already done this.

He doesn’t deserve one, but he will probably get one. I don’t see it being all the way to 3 million though. Maybe between 2.6 and 2.8 million per season. He’s not even worth 2 million.
