Prospect Watch: Stefanovich Speaks Out

Leafs prospect, Mikhail Stefanovich was quoted in an interview on the internet site of Belarussian newspaper, ‘Sports Panorma’ about his relationship with Patrick Roy, the Canadian lifestyle contrast and commentary on the people of Quebec City … the article also mentions his favorite NHL team, which isn’t the Maple Leafs.

(Gus Katsaros) — I am unfortunately not fluent in French beyond, “Spacek passez le rondelle a Cammallerri, et le but!” and meaning and emotion is lost in translation.

Fluent in French friend, Rick, did some loose translation of the article quoting the Maple Leafs 4th round, 98th overall selection in the 2008 draft.

Article Highlights and Loose Translations

- “The difference between Belarus and Canada is that here, people may act like your friend or teammate but when your back is turned, they are taking about you to the coach. In Belarus, at least we tell things to the player to his face.”

- “I lived with Patrick Roy for a year. I did not really get along with him. When i left we said goodbye, wished each other good luck and that was it. His two sons are both in show-business. I found them interesting to talk to.”

- I never got the know the city of Quebec. I lived in suburbs and never really left. The only person i talked to what Dmitry Kugryshev. I got really fed up of the same trips and facing the same teams”

- “I liked the fans of Quebec. Good or bad, they are always there unlike people from my home country”.

- Author mentions that Stefanovich’s favorite team is the Red Wings due to their history of Russian players and that he dreams of playing in the NHL.

If the words hold true about being ‘fed up’ taking the same trips and facing same teams, proof may be in the lowest goal totals in his three year junior career.

The 20 year-old was named CHL Player of the Week for the week ending January 31, where he scored six goals (24% of total 25) and 11 points in three games (3-6-5-11, plus-7).

It’s unclear what this means for the 20-year-old who will not be returning to junior. He made a reference to joining the Toronto Marlies next year, the transition into the pros that brought him to North America in the first place.

There is one troubling issue with this article that may be lost in translation, that of his favorite team being Detroit. Is this a respect for the past inclusion of Russian players into their lineup, or is this a current favorite that overshadows his dedication to the Maple Leafs.

This is just a dirt article without a lot of meaningful content in order to form an opinion of Stefanovich. Every one of us has conversations about people we are associated with that really would be considered slanderous if it were put into a public article like this. Within the circulation of where this interview was intended it means nothing. I think Patrick Roy is an asshole and I dont even know him, judging mostly by his history and how he must have parented that loser son of his.

Anyways, this article bothered me, should never have been printed. Gus you oughta be ashamed of yourself given the high quality of other articles you have written.

hey I just had a thought … you know what would really whip this kid into shape? if we hired Gary Roberts as his personal trainer / German translator and made him Chuck Norris / Bruce Lee’s sparring partner.

This isn’t terribly shocking. Most sports fans cheer for whoever’s good at the moment.

Stefanovich plays hockey; he probably doesn’t spend a lot of time getting to watch the NHL. Big deal.

No big deal, I’d probably get sick of living in Quebec and having to travel all of the god-awful province as well.
Also, having his favourite team being the Red Wings really doesn’t bother me as Kadri’s favourtie NHL team was/is the Montreal Canadiens.
I really don’t see how all this bringing in Roberts to be a personal trainer is funny. It’s really getting to be quite annoying and wish people would just leave the issue alone. I don’t think anybody here can honestly say they wouldn’t like to bring in Roberts to train the young players, but it’s really unlikely to happen, so give it a rest.

The big question should be , “What do you think of Mikhail Grabovski?” If the answer was in the negative, we could have another Belarussian feud a-la the Kostitsyn sisters vs.Grabovski at training camp this year. Maybe instead of the Gary Roberts personal training (hey, that’s a great idea!) he could attend the Tie Domi School of Fisticuffs, or the Alexander Semin School of Bitch Slapping.

Yes, Actually. Belarus spent much of the 20th century as a Satelitte of Soviet Russia, and indeed prior to the collapse of Communism, had all of about 1 year of independence (in which they were being fought over by the Germans, Poles, and Russians). The nation was territorially divided until directly prior to the second world war, when it was reincorporated within Russia and then was subsequently annexed by Nazi forces as a part of Hitler’s concept of Lebensraum. They were ‘liberated’ in 1944/45 by Soviet forces under Stalin only to be re-annexed as part of the greater USSR. Economically similar to Ukraine, much of the area was used as farming and heavy manufacturing grounds for the Soviets. During the Russian occupation (as was the case in most of the outlying states) their own language, culture and heritage was boycotted/dismantled/undercut in an attempt to help foster New Soviet Men. Oh, and even today their republic still has very strong communist sentiments and an existing rights culture and post materialist value structure are really in their infancy.

    So…yeah…their entire nation was oppressed.

Oh, and Condolezza Rice declared that Belarus was part of the “6 Outposts of Tyranny” (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Outposts_of_tyranny) along with Cuba, North Korea, Burma, Zimbabwe and Iran. So…yeah…their entire nation was oppressed

I guess suffocating domestic policy works differently. The men get tissue soft hands (to match their equally soft play), and the women get ugly?
