Prospect Watch: Stefanovich Speaks Out

Leafs prospect, Mikhail Stefanovich was quoted in an interview on the internet site of Belarussian newspaper, ‘Sports Panorma’ about his relationship with Patrick Roy, the Canadian lifestyle contrast and commentary on the people of Quebec City … the article also mentions his favorite NHL team, which isn’t the Maple Leafs.

(Gus Katsaros) — I am unfortunately not fluent in French beyond, “Spacek passez le rondelle a Cammallerri, et le but!” and meaning and emotion is lost in translation.

Fluent in French friend, Rick, did some loose translation of the article quoting the Maple Leafs 4th round, 98th overall selection in the 2008 draft.

Article Highlights and Loose Translations

- “The difference between Belarus and Canada is that here, people may act like your friend or teammate but when your back is turned, they are taking about you to the coach. In Belarus, at least we tell things to the player to his face.”

- “I lived with Patrick Roy for a year. I did not really get along with him. When i left we said goodbye, wished each other good luck and that was it. His two sons are both in show-business. I found them interesting to talk to.”

- I never got the know the city of Quebec. I lived in suburbs and never really left. The only person i talked to what Dmitry Kugryshev. I got really fed up of the same trips and facing the same teams”

- “I liked the fans of Quebec. Good or bad, they are always there unlike people from my home country”.

- Author mentions that Stefanovich’s favorite team is the Red Wings due to their history of Russian players and that he dreams of playing in the NHL.

If the words hold true about being ‘fed up’ taking the same trips and facing same teams, proof may be in the lowest goal totals in his three year junior career.

The 20 year-old was named CHL Player of the Week for the week ending January 31, where he scored six goals (24% of total 25) and 11 points in three games (3-6-5-11, plus-7).

It’s unclear what this means for the 20-year-old who will not be returning to junior. He made a reference to joining the Toronto Marlies next year, the transition into the pros that brought him to North America in the first place.

There is one troubling issue with this article that may be lost in translation, that of his favorite team being Detroit. Is this a respect for the past inclusion of Russian players into their lineup, or is this a current favorite that overshadows his dedication to the Maple Leafs.

Minor league team with lousy travel, teen-aged players fighting for ice-time(and the attention of the media, the scouts and the ladies), fickle fans in Quebec, nothing new there. As for a favorite team, kid is being honest and probably dreamed of playing for the Wings as a 15 year old… Perhaps if the Leafs give him a legit chance to make the Pros, you’ll see that change. He’s got to like the fact that they are giving young forwards a chance, but if he truly is lazy, he’ll likely want a move to a franchise with less pressure. A little maturity is needed here, but also somebody from the organization to go in and tell the kid that ” If you can improve A, B, and C – we expect you to be an NHLer by the end of next season.” Other than that, the kid likely figures much like the brothers Kostitsin in MTL, that the NHL should applaud their skill, but ignore their effort.

I took in a game at the Prospects Camp last fall and couldn’t believe how invisible he was, especially considering he had just come off a 49 goal season in the Q.
You’d think a young kid would be giving it his all in order to impress the Leafs management team, but I guess he didn’t feel the rookie camp mattered much, because in his mind he was going back to the Remparts no matter what?
I’m hoping this fall he decides to plays with some effort at the camp to show management that he deserves to be considered for a spot on the Leafs, instead of being happy that he’ll most likely be on the Marlies no matter what.

re: Stefanovich – I went to the prospect tourny in Kitchener and wasn’t at all impressed with him. My completely uneducated and likely wrong prediction is that Burke has him as an add-in for one of his ‘blockbuster’ trades that we’re all dreaming up.

Another medicore prospect who I’m probably never going to truly cheer for.

Man I can’t wait until there’s a majority of Leaf players who i actually care about.

Hard to like losers I guess, but i can count about 9 players in the organization I don’t hate with a passion…. This Charlie Brown team has a long way to go before they win back the respect of this dejected fan.

I think that being a reader over here, and one being a French canadian, I feel I should read the article and maybe help fix some misconceptiosn that can be thought of. Garrett, great job as always, but I guess I’m just helping clarify… or rather add another translation to it all.

His statement in which he compares his home town players and the ones in Canada is just that : different societies act differently, and it pissed him off. I can imagine that the Junior scene in Canada is much more competitive, not counting that it’s in the teen years, compared to the smaller Belarussian system. His example is that over here, even if he’s a friend, he’ll still show his concerns to the coach instead of the right way (in his belief), which is straight to your face (if you truly believe in the statement, then you might as well help the guy by telling him).

He lived with Patrick Roy in his 1st year, and just didn’t click at all. It just didn’t click on a personal level. He does admit being friends with his sons, stating that they are creative people.

He mentions that he also only lived in a suburb of Quebec, never really going into the city. The only player he truly talked with on a consistent basis was Kugryshev (WSH prospect), and I can understand how after 3 years the same trips, setup, teams, and being a shy or reserved person (or at least, that’s how the article makes him sound like). He does love the fans incessant support for the team, winning or not (something the Leaf Nation exibits).

In the article, he does say his favorite NHL team is the Red Wings, citing that many russian players have had success with them, such as Fedorov and Larionov. It’s just like any other player really. You grow up loving a team, and they’ll always have a special place. Fine, the leafs drafted him, but it doesn’t mean they have to be his favorite.

To conclude, he now hopes to play for the Marlies next year, also stating that “Maybe I’ll present myself (or named) to the Leafs training camp” He also affirms that his dream is to play in the NHL.

All in all, I don’t see the worries to take out of this article. Fine, he might be unproffessional about his approach of being done with Junior hockey, but I can understand his point. I mean, when yo uonly talk to one person for two years, things get repetitive. If anything, it shows that he is a reserved person, but he is commited (at least at the moment) to his team, and he wants to play in the NHL, knowing that he’ll go through the AHL, which is why he came over to NA in the 1st place.

This also perhaps influences who we should keep. Maybe we should keep Grabovsky to simplify his adaptation to Toronto, or another russian (Kulemin). Or trade both (Grabo and Stefanovich). I don’t know. But all in all, I’m not too concerned by this interview. Hope that another “Translator” will help.

Thanks for that Nights. Being a French speaker myself, I probably should’ve taken a closer look at the original article to make sure also.

But your interpretation sounds about right.

I only saw him play live in one game, and h scored 4 goals. Moosehead fans booed him when he touched the puck after that lol. I like it. I like players speaking out as long as they can back it up. So lets see what he can do

They better. Or else half of the hockey fans in Canada (habs fans) will be overjoyed, and a good portion of the other half will jump on the bandwagon (… it’s already started at my school. I’d rather follow the “jump off a bridge” crowd then the “GO…” I can’t even finish the sentence…)
