Scouting Profile

Strengths:

Blacker is exceptional at bringing the puck out of his own end, whether skating it up the ice or making a crisp first pass. Jesse’s poise in the defensive zone while handing the puck is impressive given his lack of experience at the professional level. He also carries himself as one of the team’s “Big Bodies” and will not shy away from laying a hit in order to make a play or set the tone of a game.

Weaknesses:

While under pressure in his defensive zone, Blacker could often be seen out of position and looking a little lost. At the times that his size and aggressive nature could be used moving bodies from in front of the net, he was caught floating behind the goal line.  Although this may be chalked up to his inexperience, Jesse will have to improve his positional game before he can help his team on the penalty kill or a sees substantial increase in his 5-on-5 minutes.

IMO:

Blacker has all the keys to being a successful top-4 blue-liner, but expect him to play a couple seasons in the AHL before seeing his first ice time in the big leagues. The newly turned nineteen year old must also add 20-25lbs to fill out his somewhat lanky frame in order to compete regularly against the leagues best. Though the Leafs depth at defence has Blacker currently in the bottom third, as long as the Maple Leafs have Burke as general manager, Jesse will be in the system. Truculence and testosterone tops this youngster’s resume, with a side of pugnacity and a light sprinkling of belligerence. I would compare the future of Blacker to that of Mike Van Ryn, just without the injuries (hopefully).

Quote It:

First game in the AHL:

“It was a great feeling. It’s been a dream to play for the Leafs so this is another step closer. That first game I played I went out and tried to play my game, tried to keep things simple. It was a great feeling, I thought I played well.”

Thoughts on AHL vs. OHL:

“It’s not like junior where you can skate down the ice every time or jump in all the time, play a little more high risk. Here you have to play your position properly, take a little less chance, but be more sound defensively.”

Coach’s advice:

“The coaches here really told me to focus on [making the first pass], going North South, moving the puck up and down the ice, and keeping in position.”

The only reason many are down playing the world championships this year is because Canada won’t be in medal contention, nobody on here wants to call Canadian players “chokers”, I’m sure if Canada was dominating we’d be all over the Russians.

@ Brian Burke is bringing sexy back!:
One team does not make a tournament. Yes we are the world champions, we all know this, we won olympic gold and ur bitter about the WHC taking place, but w.e, let the other countries play for a consulation price as we ice a world junior team, it does not change the fact that we ripped it up in Vancouver. On that note, there are plenty of skilled players in this tournament, if there wasn’t there wouldnt be half the NHL GM’s watching in person. Take Russia for example, they are just about as deadly as they were in the olympics, probably even better now with Kulemin ;) . Good on Gustavsson for holding his own up to this point. I’ll be cheerin him on to win Gold.

nice write up Clayton, thanks. i have high hopes for Blacker.

also, for anyone that cares, i worked today at a family’s house whose son plays for the london knights. well, he was recently traded but still… anyway, they’re long time customers of ours, and an even longer time ‘hockey family’. i was talking with them about Kadri, who was just at their place on Saturday. they’ve known him since he was 8 years old. anyway, they said they really hope he makes the Leafs this year, because it’s ‘all he was talking about’, and they’d hate to see him disappointed, and that, though he’s always been ‘a skinny kid’, he’s put on ‘a good 10 or 15 lbs.’

    @ kaz:
Lol, we definitely arent. The team we iced is, but that hardly goes for the rest of our country, Russia somehow manages to ice the same team everytime, its like they lose out in NHL playoffs so they can play in the tourny lol.

    @ long_suffering,

    Amen, brother. NO to Wallin.

    @ Doorman,

No offense, but how short is your memory, dude? The last couple of months he played average (still not what we expected) and only when it really didn’t matter anymore and he realized, hey these Leafs could be good, I better start sacrificing my body a bit. Just a bit though. I think i saw one hit near the end of the season.

I’m assuming the Wallin-Gus connection will have expired and Gunnerson and Gus will have bonded enough over the World’s to make Gus’ next season more ‘like home’.

  • Bring the Cup Home

Gus doing well in this tournament is huge. Think about it, he finished the year strong, ended thinking ‘I can be very good and win a lot in the NHL’. Then he goes and plays in a very good tournament, where goalies face tough opponents (I don’t care what any of you think) and plays STELLAR hockey. Thinks, ‘Man, I am really getting fucking good, can’t wait till next year starts.’

He heads into camp as the 50/50 number one guy. Just the right amount of pressure, not too much with the whole sesson resting on his shoulders, but not the backup who has to earn his role and get his games.

He doesn’t have to adjust to the city, has a better grasp of the language, has more local friends, and knows the smaller ice and NHL play better.

He will head into next season with the confidence needed by any number one goalie, and I for one look forward to seeing what he will do. I expect he’ll have a very good season.

    @ Bring the Cup Home:

Totally agree about Gus’ performance so far. I’m willfully ignoring the fact that it’s back on bigger ice surfaces where he once dominated and it feels like home again.

Let’s see what he can do in the final vs Russia and their big guns, assuming they show up (except for Kuli, of course:).

If it works out, we’ll be cheering for 3 Swedes NOT names Mats… How refreshing!

Hey lets just be happy that we ( the leafs) have players playing at the worlds, and that Kuli and Gus are playing well hopefully it helps at the start of next season. Beauch playing might help him going into next season as well

Wasn’t Blacker the kid ordering Kaberle around on the PP in that preseason game? I LOVED that.

Philly looks tired. I’m surprised they aren’t dumping it in to take runs at the Hab D. If they aren’t going to pick it up, get that goalie out of there or he’ll be no good for game four.
    .
I like hearing the Montreal fans boo. Idiots.
