Yzerman is a Bolt

It will be confirmed during a 3PM press conference, but the Tampa Bay Lightning will announce their newest general manager as Steve Yzerman today. Yzerman will replace Brian Lawton who was fired last month. Yzerman worked for four seasons as Vice President and Alternate Governor for the Detroit Red Wings after retiring as a player in 2006.

Recently, Yzerman helped build Canada’s 2010 Olympic Gold Medal winning team. Bringing this type of hockey mind to the city of Tampa Bay is great for a market on its way back up. Yzerman brings plenty of leadership and class to a club in need of direction.

Congratulations to Yzerman and the Lightning and good luck to their franchise moving forward.

I still dream of the rumored deal with Carolina, B.Sutter and E.Cole for Kaberle. Makes sense for both teams, Leafs get a big young center in Brandon Sutter, and a role player, top 6 winger in Cole. Canes get the puck moving D-man they were lacking last season.

Then try and trade Grabovski to the Devils for D.Clarkson’s rights, will take a lesser prospect thrown in probably to make it happen, but not if Kovi signs with the Devils.

FAs sign 2.4m Armstrong, 1.2m Malhotra and 1.0m Lebda. Lebda may not be necessary depending on Holzer and how he goes, we will see, but for a million, good sound backup.

Bury Finger in the minors this season.

So you dump 2.9m Grabovski, 4.25m Kaberle, 3.5m Finger, and add 2.9m Cole, 1.2m Sutter, 1.5m Clarkson. This loses 11.25m in cap, gains 10.2m. Kadri stays in the farm for the season, with Caputti, Irwin, and the other late season call ups.

    Leafs in 2011

    Cole, Sutter, Kessel
    Stalberg, Bozak, Clarkson
    Sjostrom, Malhotra, Armstrong
    Orr, Hanson, Mitchell

    Phaneuf, Komisarek
    Schenn, Beauchemin
    Gunnarsson, Lebda (Holzer)

Leaves first call up as Kadri for forwards and either Aulie or Mikus as defense.

LOL hardly a barn burning team, but its what it is, a tough grinding defensive minded team built for the playoffs with big strong D-men.

Someone is going to say it, might as well be me. Is Kulemin in Russia?

If Stalberg becomes a bona fide top 6 next year, and Kulemin re-ups and hasn’t yet hit his peak, that’ll go a long long way. 2 big, fast 25 goal 2-way wingers on the top 2 lines. Especially if Stalberg finishes his checks like Kuli has learned to.
    .
Of course you know I say we require some bottom 6 grit as well. Anyone like UFA Thornton? He’s my BB hunch.

I hope they think they are better than they are and stand pat and get raped on any Carey Price trade.

They’ll get their big top line centerman for Price or Halak, as long as they throw P.K. Subban into the deal!!

I may be restating the obvious here, but… Brad Richards was traded a couple of years ago for essentially a bag of pucks and a case of “50″. But the situation was different then. Tampa Bay had 3.5 years left on that huge contract, and Richards was coming off of a couple of sub-par years (51 pts in 62 GP and 70 pts in 82 GP). And they weren’t making the playoffs that year.True, Dallas is in a position of weakness, given their self-imposed cap. But they wown;t move Richards for less than he’s worth in the market. He’s coming off a good year offensively and only has 1 year left on his big contract. Conversely, Kaberle is coming off a good year and has 1 year left on a good contract. Both players’ values shoot up if they can be signed to longer term deals before hitting UFA. I don’t see Dallas parting with Richards unless Kabs goes the other way. Maybe Kabs and a prospect….

On a different note, check out this TSN video on Pronger (Burke is all over it). Kind of tells you why Burke might have such a hard-on for Schenn. Talent combined with character are traits that Burke seems to value more than just pure talent alone. I’m cheering even more for Philly now: http://watch.tsn.ca/nhl/clip305300#clip305300
