Wallin Leaves the Leafs

In a move that should surprise nobody, a Swedish hockey site has indicated that Rickard Wallin will not be with Toronto next year.  Wallin, who would have been a UFA for the Leafs, signed a four-year deal with his longtime European team Farjestads.  This ends a very brief return to the NHL for the Swedish centerman which saw one mediocre-at-best season with the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Wallin signed with the Leafs in July of 2009, accompanying his countryman Jonas Gustavsson in the trip from Farjestads to the Maple Leafs.  While management referred to the pivot’s defensive skills, faceoff prowess and leadership capabilities as the reasoning behind Wallin’s contract, it was quite clear that his signing aided in the wooing of Gustavsson and was thus deemed necessary.  Indeed, followers of Toronto this year never really saw the “strong two-way centerman” that Brian Burke claimed his club was getting in the then-29 year old.

To be fair, Wallin did display a propensity for smart decisions in his own end and an overall mind for the defensive game (especially as the season wore on).  However, his skills in the other team’s zone were virtually nonexistent, making this departure very easy on the Leafs.  Furthermore, the absence of Wallin will open up a roster spot in the bottom six for one of our prospects and shouldn’t hurt our on-ice product at all.

Cheers,

Nik

This is good. It makes room for the FA signings I want to see. I’m hoping to see the Leafs sign the entire Swiss National team. I would also like to see the Leafs make two trades. Half the team to Anaheim for Hiller and the half to the Islanders for Streit.

    @ JD:
Thats just down right insane. You obviously not very smart to suggest such a lop sided trade…..against the Leafs of course

    @ Richard-Steven Williams:
I was at the third to last game at the Gardens….against Washinton. I managed to meet a bunch of Leafs after the game. The nicest of them all…Steve Sullivan, Alyn McCauley and Glenn Healy. The rudest? Karpovtsev. This tiny kid…must have been seven years old or so, goes up to him as he’s about to cross the street and says “Mr. Karpovtsev, Can I have your autograph?” Potts looks down at the kid and barks in a terse Russian accent “NO!!! “and scurries off across the street.

I lost all respect for him that day and was glad to see him go. And for Bryan McCabe no less! LOL!

I never had any respect for the guy. I’d take a likeable, hard working guy like Wallin a million times over before that douchebag Karpovtsev. Laziest Leaf I ever saw.

Without trying to be too harsh, I will not miss him. I was, perhaps, set up with high hopes upon Rickard’s arrival after hearing that he was a scoring star and team leader in the SEL. I guess he was a live demonstration of the difference in skill level between the NHL and the SEL. I think Ron Wilson made life difficult on him as well as he attempted to shoehorn him into a small specific role. RW obviously felt he was dead weight that BB accepted as necessary baggage to get his man Gus, and treated him accordingly. Good luck back in Sweden.

I agree he was a good soldier, honest hard worker but I think we can fill his position with someone more NHL ready or tougher to play against.

Funniest thing of the day: Berger’s blog on HB getting the commet section locked down ’cause he’s a douche. Second funniest: my ban until June 25 for calling them out on being censors for their reasons. As if I needed an excuse to post here more…that site is bush league.

This opens the door for UFA Lonny Bohonos.

If the Leafs could sign a top 3 forward through FA that would be sweet but signing Lonny would be a real BOHONOS !!! lol
