Leafs Ink Holzer

According to our own Clayton Hansler, the Maple Leafs have signed defensive prospect Korbinian Holzer to a 2 year, entry level contract worth $595,000 a season. For those wondering why it wasn’t a standard 3  year ELC, Holzer turned 22 in February, thus making him only eligible to receive a 2 year ELC. It’s been speculated for days that this would happen shortly after the World Hockey Championships, and now it’s official.

Holzer is a 6’3 190 lb defenseman, drafted in the 4th round of the 2006 draft by the Maple Leafs (yes, another Fergson pick), who has spent the last 3 years in the DEL. Holzer had a breakout campaign in ’09-’10, recording 22 points in 52 games, earning himself a spot on the German national team at the World Hockey Championships. Korbinian impressed a lot of people with his play on the German team, displaying plenty of poise with the puck and a safe, well-rounded defensive game. Considering his age and polished set of skills, there is a decent chance Holzer could make the team out of camp this fall. For more on Holzer, feel free to refer to Garrett’s excellent prospect review.

Agreed, this site is the best Leafs site by far. I always come here because I read stuff here long before I get the Sportsnet alert on my cell phone. I will get any trade info here before anywhere else I am sure.

I have to admitt as much as I think Eklund is an idiot, I’m a bit jealous of him. He is practically famous and all he does is make fictional trade rumours that are obvious to everyone and talks shit. He probvably makes a lot od money and does nothing

Aulie will probably be ahead of this guy on the depth chart. Anyone else think the longer kulemin is unsigned that Burke will use him as trade bait?

I can see that happening although didn’t it take a long time to resign Grabo?

I think if Aulie didn’t suffer his injury, he would probably be higher on the depth chart than he is now. Of course, a great camp could change that.

I am curious as to why everyone thinks Aulie is ahead of the rest of our D prospects, I’m not saying he isnt or anything, just what has he proven?
He has some decent AHL experience but is coming off a major shoulder surgery while Holzer has been playing against men in germany and Mikus was in the AHL all last season

I definitely don’t think that. Maybe they are having negotiation problems but that makes sense, Kuli is a tough one to figure out. He only scored 36 points but he brings so much more to the table, so he’s probably holding out on that. His numbers are actually similar to Stajans when he first came into the league. Everyone thought Stajan was going to be a great 2 way player and his first contract was 1,750,000 so I could see Burke offering something around that, and Kulis agent wanting more.
    @ jaredoflondon:
Aulie is 6’6… thats your answer, not a good one but an answer nonetheless.

Good signing. Holzer is a decent player and only makes the Leaf stock of young players look better.

    @ jaredoflondon:
As Tim said at 6’6″ and with a good combination of skill and speed he could round into an animal on the blueline for years to come. The kid has better then average skills and natural ability. His hockey sense is also much better. Not to mention he has a huge heart for the game. To me that is what makes his stand out. But i do think he needs a solid year in the AHL to prove that.

    @ Tim Horton:
Aulie’s size definitely will help his chances at cracking the NHL. Hopefully he can just break-out and dominate like Meyers did this year for Buffalo. It’s a lot to hope for, but a man can dream.

Seems to me more and more that the depth that is being added to the defence with the Marlies like Holzer, Aulie and Gysbers will make it easier to move Kaberle. Not saying one of these 3 will replace Kaberle, but Burke is doing a great job adding young players, even if they happen to be drafted by the Leafs.
    .
This waiting till the draft is killing me. On one hand, I cannot wait until the Cup Finals are over and all the talk will centre on the draft and July 1st free agency.

  • Brian Burke is bringing sexy back!

I got a little scared today. I just bought a new Phaneuf jersey and I heard the Leafs were gonna change the home and away jerseys next year. They are gonna add a white stripe at the base of the jersey (like it used to be) and a patch on the shoulder. The changes are minimal, but I can’t wait to see them. Altought, I kinda prefered the way it looks now. The stripe at the base is not necessary IMHO.

    @ Tim Horton:

Unfortunately babelfish, altavista, freetranslation etc is very bad. I’m using the hypothetical tense, and german grammar is structured in a way that the second verb you use must come at the end and be conjugated in the infinitive (which is spelled the same way as the simple past tense). I’m saying that I’d like him to play with the leafs, but that I think he’ll likely start with the marlies.
