The Kaberle Trade Pool

(Author’s note: credit goes out to MLHS reader the stache, whose comment, “Is it possible to start up a poll/page on the Kaberle deal with every member giving their ONE Kaberle deal and whoever has the closest after the fact idk gets mad props” is the basis for this article.  Good on ya, buddy)

Salutations, true beleafers! We stand but a month away from the 2010 NHL draft in Los Angeles, where Burke and the boys from Scouting and Development will be showing up like beggars at the ball.  The consensus amongst Leaf fans and hockey analysts is that our faithful #15, Tomas Kaberle, shall be brought to market in LA and sold to the highest bidder.

Tomas Kaberle is entering the last year of a five year, $21 250 000 contract, which has a limited No Trade Clause.  This clause is void between June 25 and August 15, and the belief is that with a loaded Leafs blueline featuring Dion Phaneuf, Mike Komisarek, Luke Schenn, Carl Gunnarsson and Francois Beauchemin that the 32 year old Czech rearguard is expendable.  And marketable: he tallied 49 points this past season, 25 of them on the power play.  He remains one of the premier offensive defensemen in the league, averaging better than half a point per game from the back end for his career.  For those of you who haven’t been living under a rock for the past 3 or 4 years, this entire paragraph has been quite pointless.

The comments section on the site is inundated with readers’ thoughts on all manner of Leaf deals, and the focus (likely since the inception of this site) has surrounded where to trade Kaberle, for whom, and why.  Now, while it’s not certain that Kaberle will be traded (I mean, anything is possible… except for skiing through a revolving door), it seems illogical to have 26.325 million locked up in 7 defenders.

So in the spirit of being an arm chair GM, and with great thanks to the stache, let us all offer our own proposals on the Kaberle trade.  First, some brief ground rules:

-          List the one proposal you think makes the most sense to you.  What do we get, what does the trading partner get.  Format it however you wish.

-          Feel free to include a brief explanation of the trade (100 – 150 words) if you so choose.

-          Please keep on topic in the comments section.  Please post 1 trade proposal that involves Kaberle and only 1.

-          For further questions/comments/proposals that for whatever reason are unanswered, contact me at [email protected]

I’ll use this page as a reference, and compile the data.  If/when Kaberle is traded, I’ll go over the posts to determine the winner.  The clear winner(s) will be whoever gets the trade spot on perfect.  Of course, years in an Arts program have proved to me that perfection rarely exists, so whoever comes closest (imagine a game of horseshoes, closest combination of team/players/picks headed to Toronto as well as players/picks leaving Toronto) will win.

As to the prize, well… what do most people care about when it comes to sports predictions? Having irrefutable evidence that YOU’RE RIGHT!  Bragging rights have mattered ever since Thomas doubted that Jesus had risen from the grave.  Also, you could like…take my potentially poisonous Bryan McCabe jersey off my hands (it’s really ruining the fung shui of my room.  Seriously, there’s nothing in the book that talks about where to put horrid iconography related to overpaid, underperforming athletes).

For posterity’s sake, here’s my trade proposal:

To DAL:
Tomas Kaberle; PHX 4th Round pick in 2010 (112th overall)

To TOR:
Brad Richards; DAL 2nd Round pick in 2010 (41st overall)

Explanation: Working relationship between both GMs.  Dallas has a lot of scoring up front, but lacks a top flight puck moving d-man.  The Stars can move Benn to centre; and still have Ribiero.  Toronto needs to beg, borrow or steal for proven offensive weaponry and Richards is just that.  Further, the cash strapped Stars will have 3.55 million taken off their cap, which is well worth the ‘price’ of a second round pick if the money can be put into re-signing some of their RFAs.  Offset in monies/cap hits exchanged can be effectively nullified through the demotion of Jeff Finger to the Marlies.  Both players are on one year deals, so if the trade is disastrous, it is only the case for the 2010-2011 season.

I really like that trade rockydundas. I mean 7 mil cap hit for 2 years is a drag but getting way more youth then just a prospect and a pick straight up for kabs. New York would love this trade cause it’s a decent salary dump the can use to get a ufa…say marleau. Plus ny was on kabs short list so he’d probably sign an extension, justifying giving up so much youth. That’s my vote out of all 8 pages. And yes I read them all, and I will get a life after I post this one thanks!

    @ Blogtastic:
Thanks! And can you imagine if Drury is rejuvinated coming to T.O and has chemistry with P.K? WOW! That would be amazing! AND…he can play left wing too so he could play left with Kessell and Bozak.

My prediction. First Burke has a reputation for trying to land the biggest name in a deal. So dealing Kabs, he’s more likely to send extra bodies for one good forward, or try to land a top 8 pick and cut some salary.

Guys I would expect to be movable and interesting if Kaberle is available and willing to sign a contract extension, or accompanied with depth or a prospect include: Brad Boyes or Patrick Berglund (STL), Blake Wheeler or Colburne (BOS), Braeden Schenn (LA), Peter Holland (ANA), Ryan Malone (TB), Hodgson (VAN). Richards or Neal (DAL), Little (ATL).

Out of all of these I think that BOS, ANA and DAL may be the most ready to deal for a Kaberle type player, I hear DAL wants to move Rebeiro out of all the forwards…not Burke’s cup of tea. Richards might be had for Kaberle and a lottery ticket like Stefanov. Bruins have Wheeler looking soon for more money, but really they don’t want to move him unless he makes them do it, Colburne might be doable for Kaberle if the Leafs can add a prospect – though Burke will likely want a clear advantage in his next deal with Boston, SO I’m going with this deal:

TO ANA: Kaberle + Aulie + a late pick ( round 6 or 7 perhaps).
    To TOR: Holland + Lupul

Lupul has a similar salary to Kabs and while potentially useful as a scoring forward he’s been injury prone of late, only playing 23 games last year because of back surgery. Taking him off their books gives ANA room to work on other signings. Lupul might be expected to come on a little later (Not sure).
Kaberle fits either to fill the Neidermayer gap, or to boost their weak top 4. Holland is as good as a first rounder this year, likely better. A big center at 6′ 2″ and North American, which seems to count with Burkie.

Hope I’m not too late …
    .
    To the Leafs:
    Jeff Carter
    .
    To Philadelphia:
    Tomas Kaberle
    .
Philly has shown this playoffs that they don’t need Carter and imagine a PP with Pronger and Kabs on the point.

    @ doktordave:
I like the deal but I would really want to see us get a first back in some way. I’ve liked Peter Holland too so I like that part of the deal. I like Lupul but there’s something about him I’m not sure about. if Anaheim could be assured of signing Kaberle to a long term deal, this could work. Otherwise, big risk for the Ducks.

    @ long_suffering_leaf_fan:
Well…I hope you’re not going to say that YOU came up with that! LOL! However, I would be in complete 7th heaven if Burkie could pull that off!

I will stick with my original prediction, but Kaberle to Washington for Fehr and their late first rounder wouldn’t surprise me.

Doktordave, I would still be iffy on that package if it was just for kabby. Lupul is a guy you could pick up in free agency, don’t know too much about holland though so may be a better deal then what I think. But also no way burkes moving aulie.
Rockydundas. I like drury but ur deal is more about kreider, Dubinsky and the 1st. Those are clutch in the deal. Drury would pick up his numbers a bit maybe back to the 70′s but he’s more of a salary dump for ny which makes the trade great for them. You also gotta think burkie would try to throw grabs in instead of mitchel but I doubt sather would do it. Still think ur trade makes the most sense for both teams.

What if Burke doesnt want to pick up salary with a kabs trade. Say he is targeting a first round draft pick; HIGH!

    Who?

What team would trade their first rounder for Kabs and mabey a minor prospect with some upside.

Why would he go this route? Perhaps he is going to to sign a big time contract with one of the big UFA,s; So he will need all the cap room he can get.

    @ Doorman:
I believe the 1st and 2nd overall picks are virtually untoachable, I doubt Florida would trade the 3rd oveall pick, although Kaberle could be a part of a package to get the 3rd overall pick from them.
The highest pick I can see Burke getting for Kaberle would be Columbus’ 4th overall pick, since they are known to have interest in Tomas and might be willing to part with the pick to get him.
The problem there is I would like to see a forward drafted if Burke gets a 1st round pick and other than Seguin and Hall, I don’t see any being picked in the Top 5. In that case, I’d probably be targeting Tampa’s 6th overall pick and would draft Niederieter in that spot.

Unlike the other teams with a top pick I can see Columbus trading theirs for help now.

Kaberle to Columbus for 1st rounder and Sami Pahlsson. We take back some salary but also gain a solid checking center with ties to Burke.

Then we trade down to 7 or 8th and gain a 2nd round pick as well then draft Nino.

I dont understand the love for Penner he has arguably only had one maybe two good seasons, and even last year if you count that one he all but disappeared at the end of the year. Just saying he is older the young core we are trying to build around and to bring in Horcoff, I would just be to ashamed to be a Leafs fan. One of the most overrated underacheiving guys this side of Drury.

OK ok ok. I understand your (and others) points on this deal. Maybe I was trying too hard in not being the “Kaberle for Ovechkin” proto Leaf fan. You’re right, we would need a prospect, but it would not be Eberle.

    And I like Penner.

To Dal: Kaberle, Grabovski, Reimer + young roster player/prospect (Hanson, Stalberg, Paradis)
    To TO: Richards + 2nd

    Logic: none really.

I’ve been hoping to land Richards since we got Kessel, it would make the perfect 1-2 combo. Getting Richards makes Grabovski the odd man out IF Kadri makes the team.

Kaberle on his own is not worth Richards, the deal breaks down kind of like Kaberle + Grabs + Prospect for Richards, Reimer for a 2nd. Salary is pretty much a wash. Dallas gets a great PMD and a pretty good 2nd line centre and a couple of prospects (keep in mind Joey is supposedly after some bodies from our org).

In the end this is mostly wishful thinking. I don’t see Richards being in play for what I proposed. I’d be happy as a pig in shit if we could make that deal.

    @ rpearce76:

Really, the leafs would have to give that much??? Richards is a salary dump for Dallas if they trade him. Not saying they wouldn’t get anyhting for him, but this is like his first good year in dallas for him?? Way over rated, and too much $$ and assets to invest in a guy who will prbably end up ginving us 60 point next year (if we made that deal).

    Stick to the plan.

If there is a deal with Dallas I saw take on Reberio and his (5M) contract as a salary dump, he is still very effective player and send Kaberle their way. Plus they throw in Benn, and 1st rounder (11th)

    Toronto: 11th, Benn, Riberio

    Dallas: Kaberle +ish

Another option. Carolina is rumoured to be in on Kaberle.

They have the 7th overall, but also have three 2nd round picks, and a high 3rd rounder.

If you can’t pry the pick from them, I’d love to do this

    Toronto: Drayson Bowman, 2nd (37th), 2nd (53rd), 3rd (67th)

    Carolina: Kaberle, 5th (144th)

waaay to much, I would say that Kaberle/Grabovski & 4th or 5th rnd pick would be enough to get Richards and a 2nd…
it’s a good value trade for Dallas

can’t see Dallas parting with Benn… James Neal is the man that could be available because of their depth at wing and the fact he is RFA and will command a pretty lofty raise in $$$$

    Kaberle + Reimer/Grabovski

for — Neal and 1st rnd pick

as for Carolina.. very intriguing that they have so many picks and you know they want to add NHL ready depth on the back end and up front possibly. Don’t they only have 3 defenseman with Nhl exper. under contract… thing is that Burke will want Brandon Sutter from them… we’ll see
