The Kaberle Trade Pool

(Author’s note: credit goes out to MLHS reader the stache, whose comment, “Is it possible to start up a poll/page on the Kaberle deal with every member giving their ONE Kaberle deal and whoever has the closest after the fact idk gets mad props” is the basis for this article.  Good on ya, buddy)

Salutations, true beleafers! We stand but a month away from the 2010 NHL draft in Los Angeles, where Burke and the boys from Scouting and Development will be showing up like beggars at the ball.  The consensus amongst Leaf fans and hockey analysts is that our faithful #15, Tomas Kaberle, shall be brought to market in LA and sold to the highest bidder.

Tomas Kaberle is entering the last year of a five year, $21 250 000 contract, which has a limited No Trade Clause.  This clause is void between June 25 and August 15, and the belief is that with a loaded Leafs blueline featuring Dion Phaneuf, Mike Komisarek, Luke Schenn, Carl Gunnarsson and Francois Beauchemin that the 32 year old Czech rearguard is expendable.  And marketable: he tallied 49 points this past season, 25 of them on the power play.  He remains one of the premier offensive defensemen in the league, averaging better than half a point per game from the back end for his career.  For those of you who haven’t been living under a rock for the past 3 or 4 years, this entire paragraph has been quite pointless.

The comments section on the site is inundated with readers’ thoughts on all manner of Leaf deals, and the focus (likely since the inception of this site) has surrounded where to trade Kaberle, for whom, and why.  Now, while it’s not certain that Kaberle will be traded (I mean, anything is possible… except for skiing through a revolving door), it seems illogical to have 26.325 million locked up in 7 defenders.

So in the spirit of being an arm chair GM, and with great thanks to the stache, let us all offer our own proposals on the Kaberle trade.  First, some brief ground rules:

-          List the one proposal you think makes the most sense to you.  What do we get, what does the trading partner get.  Format it however you wish.

-          Feel free to include a brief explanation of the trade (100 – 150 words) if you so choose.

-          Please keep on topic in the comments section.  Please post 1 trade proposal that involves Kaberle and only 1.

-          For further questions/comments/proposals that for whatever reason are unanswered, contact me at [email protected]

I’ll use this page as a reference, and compile the data.  If/when Kaberle is traded, I’ll go over the posts to determine the winner.  The clear winner(s) will be whoever gets the trade spot on perfect.  Of course, years in an Arts program have proved to me that perfection rarely exists, so whoever comes closest (imagine a game of horseshoes, closest combination of team/players/picks headed to Toronto as well as players/picks leaving Toronto) will win.

As to the prize, well… what do most people care about when it comes to sports predictions? Having irrefutable evidence that YOU’RE RIGHT!  Bragging rights have mattered ever since Thomas doubted that Jesus had risen from the grave.  Also, you could like…take my potentially poisonous Bryan McCabe jersey off my hands (it’s really ruining the fung shui of my room.  Seriously, there’s nothing in the book that talks about where to put horrid iconography related to overpaid, underperforming athletes).

For posterity’s sake, here’s my trade proposal:

To DAL:
Tomas Kaberle; PHX 4th Round pick in 2010 (112th overall)

To TOR:
Brad Richards; DAL 2nd Round pick in 2010 (41st overall)

Explanation: Working relationship between both GMs.  Dallas has a lot of scoring up front, but lacks a top flight puck moving d-man.  The Stars can move Benn to centre; and still have Ribiero.  Toronto needs to beg, borrow or steal for proven offensive weaponry and Richards is just that.  Further, the cash strapped Stars will have 3.55 million taken off their cap, which is well worth the ‘price’ of a second round pick if the money can be put into re-signing some of their RFAs.  Offset in monies/cap hits exchanged can be effectively nullified through the demotion of Jeff Finger to the Marlies.  Both players are on one year deals, so if the trade is disastrous, it is only the case for the 2010-2011 season.

    @ Doorman:

Well, I suppose I have to make some executive decisions on this. Unless someone specifies, I kinda gotta go with their first trade proposal they write. Then I just scratch their name off the list. It keeps it as fair as possible, and ye know…I think somewhere in that article I did specify something about only one trade proposal. I already asked Jordan about his selection 330 odd posts ago. I’ll likely close submissions in a week or so.

As of right now, danvertising, stz, smtavare, and Troy are in the lead with their echoing comments of “Kaberle won’t be traded.” It seems that they’ll be pulling away from the pack at this rate…

    To Pit: Kaberle & Kulemin
To Tor: Staal, Tangradi & 1st rd pick 2010 (if they still have it… if not forget this post ;o)

Staal would basically replace Kulemin and Tangradi is a Burke draft pick originally from what I can tell (and american) . I threw in the 1st (looks like the 20th overall) because I thought we were giving up a bit to much for Staal and an unproven Tangradi.

For Pit, Kaberle replaces Gonchar (assuming he is gone) and Kulemin can replace the defensive role that Staal played and he already has experience playing with Malkin. I am assuming that this would also open up some cap room for them.

Haven’t read all the posts to see if anyone had the same idea.

    @ luke:

I think that alot of people under value Kaberle these days. 49 pts or whatever on the 29th place team with zero offence is pretty good. He’ll thrive on a better team and put up 50+ pts a year for at least a couple more years. I think that Kulemin sweetens the pot to pry Staal out. Tangradi was a 2nd rd. pick and has played 1 game in the NHL and their 1st pick is 20th in a supposedly weak draft. 2 provens players for 1 proven and 2 unrpoven. I think you have to look at wants and needs of both teams and I think that’s pretty fair. We’re giving up alot to get alot. The leafs are taking the risk, not pittsburgh.

Going off the board just a little bit here. I feel bad for our good old friends out in Raleigh that seemed to have been forgotten here, so I will gladly give them some love with this awsome (and more importantly, realistic) trade scenario:

    -

    To CAR: Kaberle + Aulie
    To TOR: Brandon Sutter + Cole + 2nd round pick (2010 – 37th overall)

    -

This makes sense for the following reasons. 1) There is a clear familiarity between the two teams, they have traded before and Rutherford was interviewed for a possible GM position with the Leafs before Burke. 2) The salaries are pretty much a wash, the Canes only have 2 defenseman signed for next year (Pitkanen and Gleason), none of which are truly offensively gifted. Besides Jamie McBain, the Canes are very thin when it comes to defensive prospects, Keith Aulie would bolster their depth chart. 3) The Leafs get a young, very promising forward in Sutter who I believe is already a very good 2nd line center, and Erik Cole who Burke / Wilson would gladly use to add size / grit to the wing positions. We also get back within the top 40 picks of this draft, something Burke is clearly interested in doing.

    -

This move also leaves us with the ability to trade away Grabo without needing to replace him with a centermen. Sutter is big, two-way, young, skilled and very gritty forward that would fit in perfectly here. The Canes are also deep at center as it relates to prospects. They already have Staal, also Boychuk and Dalpe are both centers that will be playing sooner than later, so they could afford to give up Sutter to get some much needed defensive help.

do the canes really wanna get rid of cole?…and not the kinda guy we would want
they are a much better team then they finished I could see them
looking to stock up with a guy like kabs
but i would be looking for the first pick and sutter as a good base for a trade

I have a buddy on CAR and saw them live 4 times this year; Cole’s speed would present a real issue on the Leafs roster – he’s lost a step

Erik Cole 2.9 mil, not sure why we want him. 31 years old, one year left. Does no one remember he was bad in Edmonton? I would rather pay Kulemin 2.9, they are similar players. Adding in Aulie is overkill.

    -

I think you might of lost track of who is the principle player in this trade for TO. It’s not Erik Cole, it’s Brandon Sutter, and then the 2nd round pick, and THEN Cole. And like you said, he is only signed for 1 year, after that, if he’s that bad, he’s gone. You also have to realize that trades need to work for both teams, we need to take a player back with some sort of salary to make it worth while for Carolina and balance out Kabs paycheque. Cole will not be our top line winger, but im sure that for 1 season, he can’t be that bad on the 2nd or 3rd line wing. I also realize that he may have lost some speed, but focus on Brandon Sutter, who will be a pretty effective centerman for years (think Jordan Staal type). Also, the second round pick may even turn out to be better than Aulie, so the notion of overkill when you’re acquiring a player like Sutter is completely rediculous.

Darn you. Until now I had every Colorado trade by virtue of no one else mentioning them. BTW why David Jones? He seems a little injury prone.

He is injury prone but he’s still young at 24, he’s signed through next year and before he went down this year he had 10G, 6A in 23GP. With the emergence of Yip and Jones injury issues he can be easily taken from Col. He also has decent size but i’ve never really seen him play so I dont know how he uses it. Im just going by numbers here. But the main part of this deal isn’t Jones, its the 1st rd, 19th overall pick.

I’ve got it boys. I know what Mr. Burke will do come June 26.

8am BB wakes up and chugs a the pint of guiness he left in his barfridge he converted into a night table. (Cause you see, he’s a thinker)

After a good stretch he recieves a phone call from a mr. Shero. As he clips his toe nails into a perfect pedicure he procedes to talk to Mr. Shero in a way that can only be comparible to how a degenerate domestic violence affender convinces the victim it was their fault they got hit. 5 minutes later he throws the clippings into the garbage and hangs up the phone. BB lets out a glorious sinister laugh cause we have just aquired Crosby, Staal and a 1st for Finger and Grabo and considers throwing in Kaberle as “a favor”

BB spends the rest of his morning walking the streets of Toronto with his pet llama in order to prospect a good parade route for next June.

Actually jokes aside i like the Kassian and 1st or hodgeson and 2nd deal. Go Leafs!
