The Kaberle Trade Pool

(Author’s note: credit goes out to MLHS reader the stache, whose comment, “Is it possible to start up a poll/page on the Kaberle deal with every member giving their ONE Kaberle deal and whoever has the closest after the fact idk gets mad props” is the basis for this article.  Good on ya, buddy)

Salutations, true beleafers! We stand but a month away from the 2010 NHL draft in Los Angeles, where Burke and the boys from Scouting and Development will be showing up like beggars at the ball.  The consensus amongst Leaf fans and hockey analysts is that our faithful #15, Tomas Kaberle, shall be brought to market in LA and sold to the highest bidder.

Tomas Kaberle is entering the last year of a five year, $21 250 000 contract, which has a limited No Trade Clause.  This clause is void between June 25 and August 15, and the belief is that with a loaded Leafs blueline featuring Dion Phaneuf, Mike Komisarek, Luke Schenn, Carl Gunnarsson and Francois Beauchemin that the 32 year old Czech rearguard is expendable.  And marketable: he tallied 49 points this past season, 25 of them on the power play.  He remains one of the premier offensive defensemen in the league, averaging better than half a point per game from the back end for his career.  For those of you who haven’t been living under a rock for the past 3 or 4 years, this entire paragraph has been quite pointless.

The comments section on the site is inundated with readers’ thoughts on all manner of Leaf deals, and the focus (likely since the inception of this site) has surrounded where to trade Kaberle, for whom, and why.  Now, while it’s not certain that Kaberle will be traded (I mean, anything is possible… except for skiing through a revolving door), it seems illogical to have 26.325 million locked up in 7 defenders.

So in the spirit of being an arm chair GM, and with great thanks to the stache, let us all offer our own proposals on the Kaberle trade.  First, some brief ground rules:

-          List the one proposal you think makes the most sense to you.  What do we get, what does the trading partner get.  Format it however you wish.

-          Feel free to include a brief explanation of the trade (100 – 150 words) if you so choose.

-          Please keep on topic in the comments section.  Please post 1 trade proposal that involves Kaberle and only 1.

-          For further questions/comments/proposals that for whatever reason are unanswered, contact me at [email protected]

I’ll use this page as a reference, and compile the data.  If/when Kaberle is traded, I’ll go over the posts to determine the winner.  The clear winner(s) will be whoever gets the trade spot on perfect.  Of course, years in an Arts program have proved to me that perfection rarely exists, so whoever comes closest (imagine a game of horseshoes, closest combination of team/players/picks headed to Toronto as well as players/picks leaving Toronto) will win.

As to the prize, well… what do most people care about when it comes to sports predictions? Having irrefutable evidence that YOU’RE RIGHT!  Bragging rights have mattered ever since Thomas doubted that Jesus had risen from the grave.  Also, you could like…take my potentially poisonous Bryan McCabe jersey off my hands (it’s really ruining the fung shui of my room.  Seriously, there’s nothing in the book that talks about where to put horrid iconography related to overpaid, underperforming athletes).

For posterity’s sake, here’s my trade proposal:

To DAL:
Tomas Kaberle; PHX 4th Round pick in 2010 (112th overall)

To TOR:
Brad Richards; DAL 2nd Round pick in 2010 (41st overall)

Explanation: Working relationship between both GMs.  Dallas has a lot of scoring up front, but lacks a top flight puck moving d-man.  The Stars can move Benn to centre; and still have Ribiero.  Toronto needs to beg, borrow or steal for proven offensive weaponry and Richards is just that.  Further, the cash strapped Stars will have 3.55 million taken off their cap, which is well worth the ‘price’ of a second round pick if the money can be put into re-signing some of their RFAs.  Offset in monies/cap hits exchanged can be effectively nullified through the demotion of Jeff Finger to the Marlies.  Both players are on one year deals, so if the trade is disastrous, it is only the case for the 2010-2011 season.

Your trade is pretty much identical to mine on page 7, except I have Grab instead of Aulie in there, with Bowman being the return.

not a chance LA does that mitch92. they don’t need kaberle.

maybe throw kulemin in place of Greg Scott and they’d consider it.

braydon schenn is a keeper and they are already stacked at D.

Since most of the trades I think are reasonable are taken, (ie. Kassian or Hodgeson or a remote chance of Staal) I thought i’de go far fetched cause it’s fun.
I propose a 3 way trade with Chicago and Columbus. The jackets gm has gone on record saying he was willing to move prospects to obtain NHL proven players.
    So I say
    Chicago gets columbus’ 4th overall
    Columbus gets Sharp and chicago’s 1st (29th or 30th I think)
Columbus then trades that very late pick and Brassard to the leafs for Kaberle, mitchel and possibly next yrs 2nd.
I’m trying to be as objective as possible ( which admittedly is hard) but I don’t see a clear cut winner here.

Chicago gets a very good salary dump, considering they get a lottery pick. Columbus gets Sharp to center Nash plus an elite offensive dman, plus a young center to play the 3rd line and a consillation pick for 2011. Toronto gets a future elite center coming off a down year and a late first rounder they can hopefully use to move up with.
Like I said strictly fantasy, but imagine.

The Cole thing scares me. I certainly feel it’s possible, but I really hope he doesn’t end up here. Far too injury prone, and he hasn’t done anything useful in the past three years.

    Here’s mine:

    To Florida:
    Kaberle

    To Toronto:
    Weiss
    2nd (Pitt)

It’s not a hugely optimistic scenario, but it gets the Leafs a fairly young, and fairly competent centre who is under contract for three more seasons. He’s not going to be a legitimate #1 centre, but he can fill that role until Kadri is ready to take it from him. The second improves the Leafs’ draft position significantly, especially if the Russian factor causes some higher ranked players to drop into the 2nd. In all likelihood though, Burke will use it to draft a large, angry young fellow from an American high school, who he probably could have waited and taken in round 3.
Florida gets McCabe’s favourite setup man, and a good start on that roster shakeup they have been threatening.

Lemme tinker my previous proposal a lil bit. Considering Dale Tallon is gonna wanna make a bigger splash with one of his main trade pieces he’s probably gonna want to have a prospect or a pick thrown in. I really doubt that Burke is gonna trade any more picks so let’s say he throws in a prospect.

    ————————————————————————-

So how about Tomas Kaberle & “mid-tier prospect” for Nathan Horton & Mike Duco. There.

    ————————————————————————-

    - The Panthers need to replace the puck-moving D void left by J-Bouw

    - Kabs would play in a low pressure market, with a resort like environment (Muskoka, baby)

    - Kabs would reunite with his buddy McCabe and help mentor all the young Czech players

    - Nathan Horton plays both RW and C, is 25 years old and makes a fair salary (4 mill/yr)

    - Horton wants to leave the Panthers to play in a “more traditional hockey environment”

    - Mike Duco is from Toronto and played well with Kadri on the Memorial Cup team in 2008

    - Both Nathan & Mike are Power Forwards and would fit right in on Burke’s team

Oh and Grabovski? Wherever he goes, it will be for an unwanted prospect or a fourth round pick. It’s amazing how many people want him off the Leafs, and yet seem to think that another team would be thrilled to have him, and would give significant players in return.

    @ jaredoflondon:
Did you say STL already has Carlo and Johnson + Pietrangelo, so therefore they dont need Tomas Kaberle? LOL. ALL 3 of those kids are bandaids, and havent amounted to 1/5 COMBINED of what Kaberle has been throughout his career. Now im not saying a trade is going to happen, but STL is not going to forget about pursuing a player who could help them right now, bc theres other players who “MIGHT” be good soon, Kaberle has 1 yr left if u remember, and alot of there players on the forward side have shown alot of promise and ability, theyre about 1 or 2 players from a playoff bid, just like us.

Yes, but when Kaberle was in charge of the powerplay in Toronto, it was top 10 in the league despite having almost no offensive weapons to work with (Niklas Hagman was far and away the best we had). He has also made a career out of being phenomenal in this area. Sorry, but 3 months of declined production doesn’t mean Kaberle isn’t a PP beast. That’s just retarded.
    -
They aren’t signing Colaiacovo because he’s a lazy piece of shit, and he’s always hurt. They tried to deal him at the deadline alongside Brad Boyes but no one would give up anything for him. The guy is basically worthless right now – a third tier offensive option for most teams.
    -
Kaberle has played over 90% of his career in perfect health. He is a reliable player without injury concerns.
    -
Johnson is not a puck-moving defensemen. His puck-moving skills are slightly better than Schenn’s. Just because they have one guy who is half decent doesn’t mean they are good for puck movers. Johnson only plays 20 minutes a night. Who’s moving the puck the other 40?
    -
They expressed interest fairly recently, and yes, they’ve specifically said they need to address their mobility from the back-end, and find a PP QB. Hmmm….
    -
The Blues have a long list of prospects, and several 3rd/4th line types who are expendable. Even Perron is expendable. Berglund, Perron, Junland, Rundblad (who had a subpar year), Crombeen, McClement, Janssen, McCrae, Cole – these guys are all expendable.
    -
    Johnson = 4.5 million (max)
Steen = 3.0 million (max, but probably closer to 2.0)
    Perron = 3.25 million (max)
    -
That still leaves the Blues with 20 million to spend on 7 players to add to their roster. Believe me, they have a shit ton of money to spend and ownership wants namebrand.

I think there is going to be a lot of un-happy people when Burke pulls the trade off.

Some of the deals are out to lunch.

    Anyways here is my deal.

    To Boston: Kaberle and Kulemin

To Toronto: Bostons 1rst and Joel Colbourne and Ryder

I still see Burke trying to get his targeted guy- Bobby Ryan. If Ryan doesnt want to sign with the Ducks and Neidermayer retires then I could see a trade going down with them. (Ducks get Kabs for 2.7m less cap space than Neidermayer to either also include Grabovski in the deal- but not sure if Ducks covet him) and if not free to spend on others so they would also want solid prospects- Guess is D’Amico). If not then Dallas deal getting Neal or Richards. If Neal then expect Dallas to also want a goalie (as we stole a few from them in Rynnas, Monster and maybe Scrivens) so Kabs + Reimer to Dallas for Neal + 1st round pick 2010 or salary dump for bigger= Kabs+ Reimer+ cheap players/prospects that Nieuwendyk liked on Leafs when he was there (Stalberg if big trade) for Richards+ 1st +…

Burke will definitely also try and do a deal with Chicago due to their cap space issues. It will not include Kabs. It would probably be prospects + cheap roster player for salary dump. I think that Hanson and John Mitchell are the type of inclusions in any deal like this. Chicago is hurting and will have no cap space for the need of 4+ players. So guys like Mitchell (proven to basically contribute just enough to stay on 4th line if stuck with only $500k to spend). I say Leafs get Sharp for Mitchell plus filling roster for under $1m- maybe Hanson if Burke doesnt like the progress he sees (doubt it as he took him to the US team for Worlds unless that was to showcase him as still unsigned) or if they need another like Sjostrom at $750k (i hope not as good value and required for penalty kill) or unproven like Paradis. They and other teams in similar position will target Stalberg as possible 15-20 goal man for $850k this year. If they want him then with Mitchell and prospect to look good for fans not just seeing salary dump (ie. a Kenny Ryan inclusion) for Sharp plus Versteeg or Bolland (never get Dustin now).

“We don’t ned no stinkin footwear” but thanks for trying out haha

Hey Micheal Stephens this page has certainly got alot of notice so i have another idea for a thread “Are you Brian Burke?”. Where as this thread is all about the mlhs readers trying their hand at what will be the results of trading Kaberle, this other idea is who can most accurately predict the starting line-up for the leafs come next season. Basically the readers would give their rundown of the what they think the lineup will be eg.

    Lwfirstline-y-?
    ?-?-?
    ?-?-?
    ?-?-?
    ex:?

    Defenceman #1-?
    ?-?
    ?-?
    Ex:?

    Goalie1
    Goalie2

So fill out the roster as you see fit but explaining how you got each player thats not currently in the leafs organization. eg. Signed Ufa Kovy to 8 years @7 Traded Kaberle+for …etc
Basically compile what you think is the best and most realistic line-up for the buds while staying under the cap. Users can use this link for ease in their line-up construction

    http://www.capgeek.com/cap_calculator.php?Team=4

And with Bettmans annoucement that the cap is to go up 2 mill say your allowed to go one million over on cap geek. Leaving one mil for wiggle room and call-ups. It would be a while before we know the results but would be a good time capsule to look back on when the season starts to see how far people are off or how close they were. And since the last contest only had mad props and apparently your McCabe jersey on the line i thought this would be a good prize….the winner gets to end any trasmission with “I’m Brian Burke bitchez!” ala Rick James and can be used as a trump card if he gets into an argument with any other mlhs reader haha

    Just an idea

I can’t see why the Leafs would trade a young guy like Stalberg and Kabs for 2 highly over paid guys. Penner had a good year last season but Horcoff was junk. If the Leafs did that deal I think they would need a young guy coming back eg Eberle and I don’t think the Oil are giving up on him.

Ok…I wanted to go off the charts for this…I apologize if anyone has posted something similar…I haven’t read all 8 pages I admit…here goes…

    To NYR…

    Tomas Kaberle
    John Mitchell
    Phil Oreskovic

    To TOR…

    Chris Drury
    Brandon Dubinsky
    Chris Krieder
    1st round pick, 2010 (10th)

This trade gives the Leafs lots of youth and speed plus that coveted first round pick. Drury needs a change of scenery clearly. The Rangers get a quarterback for their powerplay, some depth and money off the books in Drury.

Remove one Dubinsky, Kreider, or the pick, and I might see it happening. I’m sure New York would love to get out from under that Drury contract, and his birth certificate and leadership qualities might well appeal to Burke. I just don’t think the Rangers are about to give up quite that much for Kaberle, a fourth line centre, and a D-man for the Wolfpack, even if they do save money in the process.

    @ BloodonIce:
I was thinking that too and was tempted to put Kulemin into the mix but didn’t because … well… I like him and I guess I’m biased towards the Buds winning the deal! Actually… this isn’t the deal that I drafted up orginally. Originally, I had…

    To NYR…
    Tomas Kaberle
    John Mitchell
    Phil Oreskovic

    To TOR…
    Chris Drury
    Chris Krieder
    Evgeny Grachev
    2010 1st. round draft pick

That way, it’s Kaberle for Krieder and a first, and Mitchell and Orekovic for Drury and Grachev which is a salary dump… hence the Leafs getting a good prospect back with Drury for two relatively young depth players.
