Blackhawks with Plenty of History

While many didn't predict the Blackhawks and Flyers to be in the Stanley Cup Finals, there are plenty of historical facts that may prove the hockey Gods have decided this would be the match-up for the Stanley Cup before the year even started.

The last time the Chicago Blackhawks won the Stanley Cup was in 1961 against the Detroit Red Wings. In order to reach that feat, they had to first defeat the Montreal Canadiens. Forty-nine years later, the Flyers had to defeat the Canadiens to reach the finals. While it was the original six, it seems a bit coincidental that in 2010, the final 8 teams would include all three of Montreal, Detroit and Chicago.

In 1961, the previous occasion the Chicago Blackhawks reached the Stanley Cup Finals was in 1944, 17 years prior to their last cup championship. In 2009, the Blackhawks reached the final four for the first since 1992, but were unable to get past the Detroit Red Wings, the very team they beat for the championship in 1961. One year later, the Blackhawks are in the Stanley Cup finals, but had to defeat the San Jose Sharks to reach that feat. The Sharks coincidentally had to defeat the Detroit Red Wings to reach the final four.

In their last cup glory, the Chicago Blackhawks defeated both the Montreal Canadiens and the Detroit Red Wings in 6 games. This post-season, Chicago defeated the Nashville Predators and the Vancouver Canucks in 6 games through their first two rounds, matching the two rounds they played in 1961 that both ended in 6 games.

The 1961 Stanley Cup team would also feature two notable athletes in Chicago's history – Bobby Hull and Stan Mikita. Bobby Hull was twenty-two years of age at the time, while Stan Mikita was just twenty-one. In 2010, both Jonathan Toews (twenty-two) and Patrick Kane (twenty-one) will be making their playoff debut.

The only way the hockey Gods could make it even more obvious would be if the Blackhawks won the Stanley Cup in six games, and the scores of each game ended as such:

Game 1: 3-2 Blackhawks. Game 2: 3-1 Flyers. Game 3: 3-1 Blackhawks. Game 4: 2-1 Flyers. Game 5: 6-2 Blackhawks. Game 6: 5-1 Blackhawks.

We'll find out soon enough.

They have that though, in Mitchell. He was just injured, remember? Plus that’s kind of a ridiculous thing to demand in a trade – Pronger and Chara are probably the only two defensemen in the league that can handle Byfuglien. What they really need is the mobility of Kaberle to keep them from having to defend against Byfuglien in the first place – their whole defense is sooo slow.
    -
We need something on top of Hodgson to make the trade work, as Hodgson is too big of a risk with his back injury.

It has nothing to do with points though. Kaberle is quick, and efficient at moving the puck up the ice. Bieksa, Salo, Mitchell and O’Brien are all sooo slow. They could do this trade and then move Salo for a 2nd round pick or something. We could also take and bury Alberts if it makes things more enticing for them.

Kabanov has fallen very far in all scouting reports, and all the talk that Kovalchuk, Frolov and Kulemin will bolt for the KHL isn’t helping managers decide to go Russian. He might even fall as far as the 3rd round, but I suspect one of the teams with two picks in the 2nd round will take a risk on him.

    @ Doorman:
You’re telling me that like I don’t know. You’re obviously not understanding what I am saying.
    .
Remember last year at the draft, when a deal was all but done with Boston in which Toronto would get Kessel and the Bruins would get Kaberle? The only thing that prevented the deal from happening was the misunderstanding between the two teams on who was giving up their 1st round pick? That’s what the media said anyways, well maybe the thing that prevented the deal from happening was Kaberle’s desire to remain a Maple Leaf.
    .
Then when Burke and Chiarelli continued talks at a later date, maybei t was brought up that since Kaberle wouldn’t waive, Toronto would send a 1st and 2nd round pick to Boston until this off-season when Kaberle could be traded without having to waive his no trade clause and then Toronto would recieve the 1st and 2nd rounder back for him.

    @ cameron:

Kabonov states at the combine; He wants nothing to do with the KLM or Russia.

I say he goes in the First, Prob. around #10. There is everybody and their dog interviewing him.
I hope he gets his head out from his ass.

Mabey Burke finds a way to draft him.

Im not talking about last year; I could care less.

Im saying that since boston realy sucked in the playoffs. (no offence) Are they still interrested in Kabs?

    I think they would be.

Can burke get the 15th over all plus Bostons 2nd round pick. Mabey ours. Why Not?

Everyone is hoping to steal him later in the draft though – most teams can’t afford a big error. His agent has given him a script for the combine – it means nothing. Don’t you think the all North American playoffs has had any influence on draft philosophy? I think it has. The guy was barely PPG in the QMJHL, and then bolted to Russia, and then got kicked out of Russia. What the hell else is he going to say to people at the combine?

Wow, can you guys believe this fucking hype Eberle is getting just because he had a few good goals in WJC. Hes 20 years old and has been playing junior for 4 years while guys like Schenn went straight to the NHL. Thats why hes tearing it up. I think hes a bit small to be a great player in a mans league. They should be much happier about MPS and Hall

Ha, sorry if I seemed agitated. I re-read that, and it did not come out the way I intended. I hope I’m right though. Afterall, Cherepanov fell to 19th in his draft year (and he was MUCH more highly thought of than Kabanov), and just last year Kulikov fell to 14th after being a lock for the top 5 all year. Kabanov hasn’t been in the top 30 for months now. I really hope some BS at the combine didn’t ruin our chance to steal him.

Good to see we are in agreement about something once again. Eberle is ridiculously over-rated. TSN is the master of insane hype.

Well, thats were the misunderstanding comes in, because I was talking about last year and you were talking about this year, haha.
Boson proabably would be interested in Kaberle, as I believe the majority of the league would be as well. However, I don’t think I’d trade Kaberle for the 15th and 32nd overall picks in this years draft. I believe in Burke and think he can get quite abit more in return for Tomas.

I agree with you. But still, pending on where Marleau and Kovi go (if not Toronto), those teams might need to shed some players. Top those teams off with Chicago and we could be getting some great players this summer!

The problem with trading Kaberle for picks at the draft is that there is no guarantee Burke will be able to sign one of Kovalchuk or Marleau.

If you can sign Kovalchuk, I don’t think there’s as great a need to go after Ryan.

    @ Cameron:

Blum would be a great acquisition. In an ideal world, I think it would be nice to have one more player with some more size on your second line.

I’d love to see the Leafs pick up Connolly. Sounds like, talent wise, he’s in the same conversation as Hall/Segin. One more year of Junior and he could crack our lineup?

Yea, Connolly would be a nice pickup, for sure. As for my 2nd line, Clarkson and Kulemin are both behemoths. What I would love to do with that lineup, is trade Beauchemin and Hanson for Dustin Brown at the deadline next year, or next summer. I believe Brown will have his role taken by Schenn, Moller and Simmonds this season, and they will look for a playoff warrior defensemen. Then for 2012 it’s:
    -
Kovalchuk – Bozak – Kessel (so much skill for Bozak to pass to)
Kulemin – Kadri – Brown (fantastic mix of size, skill and scoring)
Stalberg – Hodsgon – Clarkson (speed, skill, size – great third line)
