Kaberle and Columbus’ 4th Overall Pick

It seems the “Kaberle to Columbus for the 4th overall pick” speculation is picking up some steam. Aaron Portzline, the Blue Jackets beat writer for the Columbus Dispatch  had this to say in his hockey blog this afternoon:

“The rumor percolating in Canada that Toronto will offer defenseman Tomas Kaberle to the Blue Jackets for the No. 4 pick appears to be just that — a rumor. But don’t be surprised, we’re told, if Toronto GM Brian Burke makes that offer in the days or hours leading up to the NHL entry draft, set for June 25-26 in Los Angeles. It’s an enticing trade, to be sure, as Kaberle is a very polished and skilled defenseman. But would Howson make that trade? Hard to say. On the surface, it’s a very fair offer, as it immediately fills one of the Blue Jackets’ glaring needs. But look further, and it’s the kind of trade that Howson — and lots of other GMs — would be reluctant to make. Kaberle is signed at $4.25 million — a fair wage — but only for one more season. He’s an unrestricted free agent after the 2010-11 season. It seems unlikely that Howson would give up the No. 4 overall pick for one season of Kaberle.”

Now this is interesting on a number of levels. The first being that this is the first source, and a Columbus one at that, other than Steve Simmons’ speculative article that connects Kaberle to trade talks for the 4th overall pick. However, there is always the possibility that the writer is simply basing these assumptions on the same article we already know about. The second point is that the writer, and I’m assuming he’s a Jackets fan, believes the trade offer to be “very fair” as it “fills one of their glaring needs”. Lastly, Portzline suggests that it’s unlikely Howson would give up such a high draft pick for “one year of Kaberle”, possibly hinting at the fact that Columbus would give it some serious thought if Tomas came with a multi-year contract extension. Food for thought.

I’d rather take Voracek over him, any day of the week, I mean come on 36 points 9 goals like really for Kaberle.

    @ Kinger:
this is awesome news, if Burke can wrangle as many teams as possible into the Kaberle trade it’s only going to give him a higher return…..

I hope he steals the spotlight right before Boston Drafts 2nd….Lol

    @ Kinger:
so whats a 32 year old defenceman with declining statistics and 1 year left on a contract worth?

you are obviously unfamiliar with brassard (22yrs old) and his potential. hes got size, good speed and hands, he has not yet translated those abilities into points at the nhl level, but has done so at every other level. I dont think the leafs could even get brassard for kaberle.

I laughed when I read that, imagine hahaha that’s a kick in the teeth to Boston LOL. He would do something like that to, but your right, it’s just gonna drive the price up higher, and get teams into a bidding war.

obviously you would rather voracek, but theres no way they would trade him. especiually not for just kaberle. this is what i mean about obvervaluing him.

    how about nash for kaberle?

lol… Burke wouldn’t do it like that, but man.. it would be exciting to hear us making moves on draft day….

agreed on whoever posted that – Columbus, Carolina and Dallas are definitely options to trade with.. I would throw St. Louis in as a slim possibility as well

How about this for an idea….

Anaheims 2 first rounders ( 11 or 12??? and Phillys 29/30th) and their 2nd to Columbus for there 1st(4) and there 2nd (34).
If Cam Fowlers still available with the 4th with Gudbrasson going 3rd Fowler can be seen as a potential Niedermayer replacement. I don’t see Niedermayer and Selanne calling it quits on a year they don’t make the playoffs, so Fowler will get a year in the A to develop before coming in. Then….

Columbus trades Philly’s first and Aneheim’s second and Filatov to Toronto for Kaberle and say our 4th/mid tier prospect…

Columbus still has a relatively early first, Anaheims, and lord knows they don’t make good use of top ten picks anyway aside from Nash and Voracek really. So there fans won’t kill them for trading a 4th for Kabs which i couldn’t see happening anyway. But leafs still get a first which they can use for a McFarland(sp???) or move up and get a Pysk. And a second that they could use for Kabanov if noone else has taken the risk and if not they could get a more reliable albeit not as skilled prospect. And Filatov can step right in practically as our second line Rw. So we’d get our top 6 and 2 picks for Kabs and people can’t complain about us not having a first and second this year.

    @ lock0073:

I know Kaberle is worth a hell of a lot more then Brassard that’s for sure, Neal is better then him, if we could get Richards in a package he’s better then him, I forget who but the Carolina trade proposed yesterday is better, Voracek imo would be a way better choice to get then Brassard, and for you too say he’s on the decline is just wrong, he was on pace this year to smash his career high in points, until the Dion trade went down then he shit to bed, Kaberle is top 10 for defensemen, I just don’t see how you think getting a 36 point total with 9 goals. Brian Burke ” We want to get a big forward who can put up points and score goals” I don’t think Brassard does the job.

i’m not trying to bash you for real, I’m just stating my POV, and stating facts. If this trade went down, I would be pissed.

    @ lock0073:

I don”t over value him LOL, you could easily make a package around Kaberle to get Voracek or any other player, you would have to make better packages for depending on the player you want, that don’;t mean I over value him. He would be the main chip though.

    @ BeLeafer:

Yeah man I would throw St. Louis in there to, Burke can make any deal go down, there are definitely players from the Blues he would like to have, just depends on what he wants to give up.

Question: Burke says he’s got nibbles but isn’t that “tampering” or are they allowed to fax/talk proposals?

For the life of me – I would think the offers would come from Washington and Pittsburgh and maybe New Jersey – I’m just guessing because these guys had early exits and might want to shore up their defence.

I’m guessing Burke isn’t going to get a first but a prospect ready to crack the line up this fall and maybe a 2nd rounder. Some bodies will go as part of a bigger package I suspect something big is coming back.

My money is on signing Colby out of Atlanta.

I do NOT want Hodgson out of Vancouver – I’m not sold on his back problems.

my proposal is this and very possible

Sign kovi to a 5 year @ 7.5 mil per with endorsment promises.
seriously try to sign Kuli ( kuli has actually got some great hands and some sick puckhandling prowess, if given a more offensive role he will flourish even more as he seems to get the defensive aspect of the game. So IMO :no need to play him as a defensive forward as it has already been embedded into his game to backcheck like a demon) He is worth 2.5 mil per for 3 years.
Sign torres for a cheap price @ 1.25 per at 2 years(that might be overpayment)
bury finger in the minors or trade with a package with grabs
Id do in a heartbeat beauchemin for lupol
then trade kabs and a prospect ( mabye stefanovich)to Pitts for Jordan Stall

What about (and much as I would love to keep the Kessel/Bozak/Kulemin line together) -

    To Pit
    Kaberle + Kulemin
    To Toronto
    Staal + Pick/Prospect A

    To Anybody
    Grabovski
    To Toronto
    Pick/Prospect B

    To Chicago
    Picks/Prospects A + B
    To Toronto
    Sharp

Might even be cap space for Kovalchuck… ;-)

Sharp can play Centre &/or Wing and would be a great mentor/example for Kadri.

I can imagine the Pens would love to have Kaberle to replace Gonchar and Kulemin to play with Malkin . Just wonder whether we’d get enough back to be able to get Sharp? If not, keep Kulemin and try another package to get Staal.

If Kaberle signs an extrension, then this trade is as fair as fair can be. But if not, we will be fleecing them. I would like Voracek+1st to be honest, but that would take a number of different things to go their way I would assume.
    Kulemin+Kaberle
    FOR
    Voracek+1st
Does this work for anyone? I would do it, mostly because Kulemin is looking for too much cash, and for the jackets maybe Kulemin helps get Filitov back to their team without wetting his diaper again and being a baby

then next year when Voracek has another 50+ point campaign, he’ll want even more money than Kulemin is asking for now, so again you’re left at square 1.
