The 4th Overall Pick: Update

A couple weeks ago, we heard from Aaron Portzline that Columbus could be preparing to field an offer from the Toronto Maple Leafs involving Tomas Kaberle for the 4th overall selection in this June’s draft.

Today’s Columbus Dispatch blog provides more insight into what the Blue Jackets could do with that pick. Portzline explains that the team has been very quiet about its intentions because after Hall/Seguin, several names (Fowler, Gudbranson, Connolly, Gormley) are interchangeable within the next few picks. Columbus could seek to trade down a few spots or even out of the top 10 altogether if the offer was “really sweet”. Aaron hears that the Blue Jackets would not even entertain the notion of trading the 4th overall pick straight up for Senators’ top centre Jason Spezza, which should give you an indication of its worth to them.

Yeah the Suter Brothers have really manage to shit all over that calgary franchise. Guys Leafs are Gonna rock the house this year. I’m super pumped about Kadri and whatever ever top forward we could grab. I have posted trading and keep kaberle, and would be happy either way. Leafs did alright down the stretch when he was playing shit. So I think wed survive without him. I also miss White, but not sure how much hell demand if princess matty stajan got almost 4

    @ Bob is your uncle:

It’s not that big of a deal… and realistically it probably is better taken care of ‘behind closed doors’ when you are dealing with Alec. I agree that things should be left up, but if Alec deems it unnecessary, there was probably a good reason. I don’t know exactly what was deleted or said, but if it was pertinent information, I bet it would still be up there. Now, I’m not trying to say anything that isn’t important should be deleted… because I would never have anything kept up ever, but anything that could be counterproductive to the site, Alec has every right to take it down. (Not trying to start a squabble here lol)

    To Tor: Semin + 2nd rounder/ 3rd rounder
    To Wash: Kabs + Grabovski
We get a top six forward and pick, also free up some cap space
Could you imagine if we trade Kabs for Semin and then signed Kovalchuck? Hell yeas

Hell, Kulemin would never have to learn english if we retain him…

    @ SASH:
I’m pretty sure White is looking for the same as Stajan. Like $3.5 million. I miss him too, as he was one of the only guys I didn’t want to see traded from the Leafs. But it was worth it. Dion Phaneuf isn’t available every day. It’s a lot like Kulemin. He’s a guy I’d hate to see leave, but you have to give up talent to get talent, and if a can’t-miss star player is available, you can’t hold on to your players just because you don’t want to see them leave.

    Could we even afford that?
We’d really have to hope to get some unexpected secondary toughness and reliable 3rd liners secondary scoring and cheking from our current kids on small contracts.
    .
Do agree then that you think the team would be in good shape going forward this way?
    - a lot of offensive talent on the top 2 lines
    - mostly questionable NHL-calibre, 2-way maybe-gritty bottom 6
    - assumed solid Defense
    - assumed NHL worthy Goalies

Nice way of putting the Kulemin viasco into perspective, but I repeat not worth it for just Clarkson. In order to let go of Kulemin, I think we have to get back a top 3 current forward, Ryan from Anaheim, or Semin, but something along those lines. Remember when R. Malone was rumered? You think Stevie Y will try to shake things up in Tampa?

Should be affordable if the cap goes up $2 million as expected, and if Finger is buried in the minors. Kulemin and/or Grabovski would probably have to be let go too in order to have money for 1 or 2 bottom six guys.

    ***NAME GAME***
Nazem Kadri and Luca Caputi have to be a couple of the best names for Canadian hockey players.
Are there any other Canadian players with really cool names?
Ever sinse Nikolai Borschevsky came along I’ve had a thing for cool names but it’s usually Euro’s that have them. It’s just nice to see a couple of Canadian kids with catchy names.
Who do you think has a cool name on the back of their Jersey? They don’t have to be Canadian.
PK Suban is another that is catchy too. Although his name is sewn onto a Jersey that makes any name look kinda bad. Milan Lucic is kinda cool too. Any others?

    To Ducks
    Kaberle

    To Leafs
    Lupul
    Peter Holland
29th or 12th overall pick not sure which would be fair

But that’s a fair trade and what Burke asked for a Roster player a good prospect and a draft pick.

Bob, first let me say I’m sorry to hear about your wife’s passing a few years ago. I know, albeit not in exactly the same way, how much empty space that can leave, and I see how this site can be a small part of therapy (probably for all of us in one way or another).
    .
From an online friend: I think you’re prolonging an unnecessary dance right now. I don’t think anyone here is wanting to take sides or pass judgment. A number of us are happy to see your name again but don’t want to feel stupid for welcoming you back if you’re not happy being back.
    .
I hope you’ve said your peace and can get back to posting your hockey comments again…whether it’s offering something new or ripping on something old, just do what you do best and tell us what you think.
    .
You want to arm wrestle or something ;-)

    Re: Watters

Obviously the guy is blow-hard who has nothing useful to say. Hard to understand how he is still employed. Fact of the matter is though, until this franchise does something, we are fair game for ridicule.

I am confident that we are moving in the right direction and that Burke will make some moves that will accelerate that process. Nevertheless, it is going to take real progress in the standing and not just promise to keep the trolls at bay.

    Re: 3K’s

Kaberle will not generate a huge return as Curran has guaranteed that he will be viewed as no more than a 0ne-year guy except for those few teams he sees as acceptable. Those GMs know they are competing with a small number of teams for him.

Kulemin – very surprised that the range seems to be $2.5-3.5M and that the process is so public.

Kovelchuk – No value in trading assets for his rights. The guy suffered in Atlanta for too long to not test FA opportunities. The only exception is if Burke has a strong reason to believe he is interested in Toronto.

    @ SASH:
I would never trade Kulemin for Clarkson either. Clarkson is a good third liner, but so are Armstrong, Cooke, Malhotra, Nichol, Torres… and so on. No need to give up young talent for someone like that. I have no idea what to expect from Yzerman. Who knows if the ownership is even going to give him full say in what to do. I could see Burke going after Malone though.

Onrait is one the best sports personalities ever. The guy cracks me up. I just love his “Hello Pavel, nice Demitra” line. Every once in a while he makes a stupid joke but for the most part I think he’s great. I still don’t think even he could ever make Bob McKenzie laugh though!

Neither teams would that for Kulemin he’s a great guy but hasnt proven to be more then a second liner (points wise) Kulemin for Neal could be closer but even then I could see having to add a prospect. At the end of the day I’d be happy if Kulemin got traded on his own for a return such as Clarkson (who’s actually scored 17 goals before if I’m not mistaken) but would be also inclined to package him with a Hanson or Mitchell to get potentially Setoguchi or Neal. Or a block buster with Kaberle.

Most macho hockey fans wouldn’t get him. He won’t last at TSN anyhow. CTV will promote him to their news department within a couple of years. Apparently many non sports fans who only watch the Olympics think he’s very talented at what he does. He and James Duthie recieved great reviews for their work in Vancouver. That dorky son of Eugene Levy makes me wanna barf though.
