We’ve partnered up with Pension Plan Puppets to bring to you a Player Review series, where we will be evaluating and grading the 2009-10 season for every Leaf who featured in a significant number of games for the Blue and White last season, with an eye towards 2010-11. Today we feature Jeff Finger, profiled by Alec Brownscombe.

The Summary:

A former 1999 eighth round pick, Jeff Finger came to the Leafs via unrestricted free agency as a 29-year-old who was skating in the ECHL the last time Toronto made the playoffs. After his first steady NHL season with Colorado in ’07-08, Cliff Fletcher rolled the dice on a $3 million-per-year raise for the journeyman that will cost the Leafs 3.5 million against the cap annually until 2012. Fletcher obviously thought there was a lot more to come from Finger in his late development as a two-way defenceman, but let’s just say on that fateful day in July, 2008, the optics weren’t good.

To his credit, Finger, working under big contract-induced scrutiny never before experienced in the likes of Colorado, Lowell, Hershey or Reading, combined with Luke Schenn to help fill some glaring needs in the Leafs defense in ’08-09. Finger’s  136 hits helped the Leafs’ climb out of the bottom ten league-wide in ’07-08 and into thirteenth in the category come the end of ’08-09. Additionally, his 113 blocked shots made him far and away the team’s leader, 18 ahead of second-best Pavel Kubina in 16 less games played. These are no doubt important functions, and he did supplement  his defensive performance with some offensive output (5 goals and 23 points) while averaging 20 minutes a game, but at $3.5 million Finger was always in an uphill battle in justifying the price of his ticket.

’09-10 could only be described as a regression as Finger featured in just 39 games throughout the campaign, with many considering his future in a Leaf jersey to most likely have “MARLIES” written across it.

The Good:

Surprising to me, Finger averaged the highest points-per-60 of all Leafs defencemen last season at 1.06, and was the owner of the highest primary assistant average of 0.53 per 60, albeit with a half-season sample size. Still, it hints that Fletcher might not have been all wrong in identifying Finger has some understated two-way ability as a puck mover.

Finger also remained the Leafs’ best shot blocker by a country mile based on the averages, posting a 9.3 shots blocked per 60, a full 4 BkS/60 more than second-best Carl Gunnarsson and good enough for fourth in the league. This was even a marked improvement over his ’08-09 total of 6.2 BkS/60. Give Finger credit, he lays it all on the line when afforded the opportunity.

The Bad:

Finger’s TOI/60 dropped from 20 minutes in ’08-09 to below 12 in ’09-10. This can be in part attributed to management’s addition of  bigger names and contracts in Francois Beauchemin and Mike Komisarek, who both provide in more expanded roles the hardhat functions that Finger was originally signed to perform. Mike Komisarek would fall to injury last season, but it wasn’t long before Carl Gunnarsson caught the attention of the coaching staff with strong two-way play.

The results for Finger defensively outside of the shot block column weren’t overly positive however, as Finger posted a -11 in 39 games while playing the second easiest competition among Leafs blueline regulars. Garnet Exelby became the Leafs’ sixth man on a more regular basis while Finger was resigned to spot duty. Decisions by management certainly put Finger in tough to hold down a regular role, but he didn’t exactly make it a difficult decision for the coaching staff.

The Ugly:

The reality of the situation is that Jeff FInger is an obstacle in Burke‘s cap management for this season and the next and has negative trade value. On a blueline with nearly twenty million tied up to it’s top four salaries (and 19 even if Kaberle is subtracted and Schenn is added), Finger’s $3.5M cap hit as a 6th or 7th man is nonviable from a cap perspective. Especially if Burke wants to spend some big bucks on the FA market, and even more so should his suggestion ring true that some of the Marlies’ Big Four (Keith Aulie, Korbinian Holzer)  will make a push for a bottom pair spot with the Leafs in the fall (in terms of numbers).

Burke is a man of principle, and believes that a player deserves a shot elsewhere if the opportunity isn’t with his club. I won’t say Finger’s immovable, as we all ate some crow for thinking similar thoughts about Jason Blake, but it of course would have to be a “my problem for your problem” scenario where Burke trades off term for dollars. This requires quite a few pieces to come together between two general managers. If something weren’t to come to fruition, Burke has also let it be known he’s not opposed to burying in the minors should a player pose no contribution to the parent club.

There remains the outside shot, if the Leafs have some cap space to play with, that Finger resurges at training camp and fights his way back into some icetime.

Audience Participation:

Now it’s your turn.  In the comments, rate Finger on a scale of 1-10 (10 being the best) based on his performance relative to his potential and your expectations for the season.

Discussion Questions:

If you were Brian Burke, how do you approach Finger’s contract going forward?

Has Finger played his final game in a Maple Leaf jersey?

I got the Vic-20 over the 64 cause there were more games available. I couldn’t count the number of hours I spent copying programs for games from “Compute” magazine. Every time I turned it off I lost everything. Finally my dad bought me a cassette recorder so I could save the games. OMFG at how things have changed. Kids walk around today with gizmo’s that would make Agent 99 jealous.

    To Toronto: horcoff + 2nd rounder (31)
to Edmonton: finger + complete box set of star trek ds9

then we bury horcoff in the minors.

    @ refaeL:

Well, based on the Phaneuf trade, I am still baffled at how little Toronto had to give up.
    .
It really would depend on Kaberle looking to re-sign in Pittsburgh. I am not too high on Staal but have to keep in mind that his points are reflective of playing a 3rd line role. He is a big guy that will be able to feed wingers. Just not sure how productive he will be with the current crop of Leafs wingers.
    .
However, really hesitant to believe that Kulemin will be part of any trade. What team is going to want to deal with with an unsigned RFA headache? What team is going to pay his demands? Look at Calgary. They are dealing with an Ian White who is looking for a hefty pay raise. Toronto aleady knew this and wisely made him part of the Phaneuf trade.
    .
It would be more realistic to see Grabovski go for the simple reason that he is already under contract.

Besides that, Pierre M. would have convulsions trying not to go nuts for the guy (Parise) wearing a Leafs jersey.

    @ daniel marois:

Pittsburgh doesn’t need Grabovski. They have tons of centres, and too few wingers to play with them. Kulemin, who has a history with Malkin makes a lot of sense for them. Still, I agree, they’re not going to want to give him 3.5 either.

    @ BloodonIce:

Exactly. That’s why Kulemin will need to be re-signed by Toronto before he is traded. Grabovski will probably be dealt to a team weak at centre for probably as high as a second-round pick.

The whole Parise comment has me thinking:

    To NJD
    Kaberle, Kulemin, Finger/Beauchemin, 3rd, Mitchell

    TO the Leafs:
Parise, Clarkson, 2nd rights to Martin

All guys that Burke would love to have. On Jersey’s side I think they are going to make one more huge push while they can with Marty. And besides they are grabbing a couple of good guys in the deal to replace lost players in the Kovy trade.

    @ daniel marois:
Those are valid points on several fronts:
    1) Staal has not cracked 50 points in a regular season, so looking for him to step into a number 1 role, with a more offensive-minded approach to his game, would be a gamble on Burke’s part (although I would like his chances of becoming that guy)
    2) Grabovski is another option – if they’d do it for Kabs and Grabs I’d be on it like stink on a monkey. I could see them dealing for Kulemin though for the simple reason that he has history with Malkin.

Finger – A good solid player, but paid too much by about $1.5 Million.
You might see a team that is shallow on the blue-line with good cap space interested, (Carolina perhaps?) but no GM is going to deal for him unless they are moving some over-paid forward.
As much as I like Giggy, the Ducks took Blake’s salary hit because they could not afford $6 Million for a #2 guy who might be valuable for big games and play-offs.
Ask yourself who is out there at Forward who is over-paid or had injury trouble…and you might find a fit for a trade if he’s a Burke-type player. Trading Finger’s $3.5 M for a useful forward paid $4 to $6.5 Million would be the same as Burke landing Top six forward for $0.5 M to $3 M cap hit.
    Interesting to mull that over.

As for Finger, I like him, I just wish he was allowed to give some of the salary back, I suspect he’d likely do it in trade for avoiding an unjust burying in the minors if it comes to that.

And as far as trading Grabovski, Atlanta would be the best team to talk to they have such a small amount of forwards signed and they seem to love former leafs there.

    To ATL
    Grabovski and Reimer

    To the Leafers
    MacArthur and Esposito

Just my opinion, but Lou wouldn’t do all that for JUST Parise. No chance. If Burke can land Parise he should run for PM, because every Leaf fan in Canada would vote for him.

If Finger made $2.0 per year, I’d really like him. At $3.5 I don’t. For another two years, I really don’t.

Anyways, his stats leave me thinking that he should be playing more. Good shot blocker. Can do SOME things offensively. His contract is much uglier than his play.

    @ BloodonIce:
I think your wrong, If Jersey signs Kovy then Parise becomes a chip to fill in other wholes if he can bring in another winger in Kulemin the can score 40 points and a D-man that averages 40 points a year, and a stay at home defenceman with some upside. Then I am sure it would be done plus it fits under the cap. The Clarkson and 2nd rnd pick part of the deal is essentially for Mitchell and a 3rd. But part of the much bigger deal.

Parise is an rfa next year and you would think he will at least double his salary and cap hit. If he truly will not extend with NJ that does put Lou in a bind but that is a stretch from the Leafs having the assets to acquire him. Schenn also is an RFA next year but without arbitration rights I believe and without a hope of collecting anything close to what Parise will.

I like it. Kulemin seems to be sticking at 3.5 mil so hes pretty much good as gone. Zajac = Scoring forward with size, Clarkson = secondary toughness. Very good chance a deal like this goes down.

I ‘ve asked before but got no feedback. Maybe it’s a stupid facking question. That’s not enough reason for me to not ask again.

If Finger was an UFA this year, would a team sign him to 3.5? If so, I could conceive someone trading a 3rd/4th round pick for him so Burke doesn’t have to burry him anywhere.

You gotta stop this shit now. LMAO! I also has a Texas Instruments TI-99 4A basic. I didn’t have to program pong however. I had and still have the actual game. Along with Colecovision, Atari, Atari 2600, Gemini and Activision. I still have it all in boxes in my basement. I am going to dig it out and show my kids the way we did it. And oh yeah! “Hungry Like The Wolf” was my favorite song for years. Probably still have the album too…hidden in a box with my Hockey Sticker Albums, Zipper Pants and Michael Jackson glove.
