Phaneuf to become 17th captain in Leafs history

Sources tell TSN that the Toronto Maple Leafs are expected to name Dion Phaneuf as the club’s 17th captain next week.

The team is holding a press conference on Monday, where the club says it will make an announcement and unveil a new Maple Leafs sweater.
-Darren Dreger

While seemingly a long time coming given the rumblings since late in the season, this decision still strikes me as a bit rushed. I understand the excitement with Phaneuf immediately stepping into the locker room, winning the respect of his peers and taking hold of a leadership role with little hesitation, but I’d rather see a player in Phaneuf’s position settle in for another half season to make sure it’s beyond early enthusiasm and instead the veritable right decision. Nonetheless, early indications are that he’s the right man for the job.

Here are the jersey mock-ups courtesy of LeafsHQ. After simplifying with the original reebok design, the double horizontal stripe is making a return as well as a shoulder patch of a traditional Leaf. A nice fresh look with a throwback feel.

Haha! I would be more comfortable seeing 17 on Clarkson than I would seeing it on a lot of other guys, but still, no. That one should remain untouchable. I do like the sound of your line though.

    @ Cameron:
This is a three-way that actually seems realistic. I could see T.O. having to pony up just a tad more, but maybe not. Really good thinking on your part.

I suggest you submit a letter to MLSE addressed “Attn: Brian Burke and David Nonis”. “Gents, We’ve come together to put this offer in front of you. We’d like to get this done asap. We’ve arranged a conference call for Monday morning at 9AM.”

Signed, by committee, Mike Gillis and Lou Lamoreillo

    Worth a shot.

Apparently there was a night years back, first game of the season (I think) the Ducks were all skating on to the ice, and as each one was introduced, his name would be projected onto the ice. Kariya, the team’s biggest (only) star skated out, and the name on the ice was “Paul Karpov”.

for all you out there that see last year as an abyssmal Failure you are clearly looking as stats instead of the whole picture. The goal was to make the playoffs and change the teams mentality, Build its youth, get rid of atrocious contracts, and gain prospects. Sure we didn’t make the playoffs (fail# 1), lost some picks gained a Star winger and a number of prospects(mild pass), Schenner took a dive at the biggining of the season but continued to develope his game greatly, Bozak, Gunner, Gust, Caputi, Sjosless joe development was all huge pass. Bad contracts gone Blake, Toskala and other useless mild contracts gone( supreme pass). This was a very productive season for the buds as a whole.

He was known well enough that it made the Toronto papers, but then Canadians knew him from his Olympic days. Not sure how big a deal he was in Anaheim at that point.

    @ Mortagleus:

    Absolutely.

The early seasons of a rebuild are always a bit painful, but we should be happy that we are finally getting to see the rebuild this team has needed for so long.

If it was up to me, the Leafs would have said to hell with the playoffs in ’04, and traded off all their big names to teams with legit shots at the Cup for picks and prospects. Nieuwendyk, Roberts, Tucker, McCabe, trade the whole lot. Then with the lockout, the prospects they acquired would have had an extra year to develop. Didn’t happen though.

I’m glad to see we’re finally getting a rebuild, even if it is far more slow and painful than it would have been if they’d had a pre-lockout fire sale, or if the Muskoka Five had been more cooperative.

I believe we will end up with 2 first round players or a first and first line roster playe for Kabs. The first rounders will come from previous 1st round drafts from 2 different teams in a 3 or four team trade party.

I think Jersey has a good idea already with Kovalchuks expectations are and so trading his rights at least gets them something. I look for that to happen somewhere on draft day to a few days before July 1st.

it’s for the guys buying jerseys. Phaneuf as captain is fine. They are big shoes for him to fill and I hope the fans don’t get on him too early.

I don’t really want to waste assets on an old man like Langenbrunner. He’s 35 years old. We can’t waste Kaberle on someone that will retire before Kaberle would. If they want to get rid of him to dump salary, and they’ll take a couple second tier prospects for him, then sure, but that would be a waste for Kaberle.
    -
Also, Martin is nice, and yes he would have been paired with Komisarek, but Phaneuf, Schenn, and Gunnarsson are the core of our D. Burke isn’t going to spend 4-5 million on a complimentary defensemen for our bottom pairing. If he hadn’t signed Beauchemin last year, then sure, I could see it. We need offense, and I just don’t see Burke not throwing his hat into the ring. He has so much to work with in Toronto outside of the salary cap. He can get it done.

    My offer to Kovalchuk

    Year 1: 8 million
    Year 2: 9 million
    Year 3: 10 million
    Year 4: 8 million
    Year 5: 5 million

    Average – $8 million a year.

Burke is being so clever about Kaberle this time. I love it. Last year it was the sky and the moon he wanted for Kaberle, and it killed the market. This year, he is asking for one player, OR one draft pick. He’s involving everyone, and all the managers are thinking “well, I have one player or one draft pick I can part with”. From there, someone will get emotionally connected and throw more on the table. The return will be good.

Tampa entering the Kaberle sweeps? Well I would be less than pleased if its just Malone and a draft pick for Kabs. We can do much better….I love the rumor mill swirling already because the value keeps going up and up and up……..
