ESPN: No Kovalchuk for Leafs

According to Pierre LeBrun of ESPN.com, the Toronto Maple Leafs will not be pursuing soon-to-be unrestricted free agent sniper Iyla Kovalchuk. LeBrun cites a quote from Leaf GM Brian Burke stating that the club would not “be involved in that race”. Although this could theoretically be a ploy to avoid tampering charges, Burke has always been very up front about his intentions and could’ve easily either skipped the question or answered with a generic “we will explore every possibility to improve our club.” Thus, I would be willing to bet my bottom dollar that Kovalchuk does not end up in a Maple Leaf uniform next season.

In the same article, LeBrun provides a brief update on the Kaberle trade talks, explaining that the number of inquiring teams has reached the double digits, though no serious offer has been made of yet. The only other high end puckmoving defenseman available is unrestricted free agent Sergei Gonchar, though rumors of his demand for a 3 year contract at age 36 could scare off potential suitors.

Until Kovy signs elsewhere it isn’t impossible. It can happen. Not giving up hope because of some twitter noise.

I’m not giving up hope in getting Kovalchuk, because I never had any hope of him coming to Toronto in the first place.

IMO Marleau is a little washed up and has too much “has been” aura around him for TML to be seriously interested. He’s not the player he used to be I don’t care what kind of season he just had… look at the players around him!

If you say so, prepare to be disappointed.
For your information, as soon as a player signs a contract with a team he is a member of their organization, regardless of whether he played a game or not.
Martin Skoula can claim that he was once a part of the greatest sports organization in the world, even though it was for less than 24 hours, haha!!

Tis’ why i winked at the end of my comment ;) loll.

Surprising how many people are saying “Burke doesn’t lie”….etc.

You remember him *straight up* saying he wasn’t interested in the Toronto Maple Leafs GM job?

You know where he works now, right?

Burke, when allowed to (or it’s appropriate to) tell the truth, will. When he says “when any valuable player becomes available, I’ll at least make a call…it’s my duty as a GM to do so”, he’s not lying. Best believe he will at least talk to Kovy’s agent. A $7M contract in Toronto with a last name like Kovalchuk is A LOT different than a $10M contract…….basically anywhere else in the league. This guy would sell a billion jerseys.
