ESPN: No Kovalchuk for Leafs

According to Pierre LeBrun of ESPN.com, the Toronto Maple Leafs will not be pursuing soon-to-be unrestricted free agent sniper Iyla Kovalchuk. LeBrun cites a quote from Leaf GM Brian Burke stating that the club would not “be involved in that race”. Although this could theoretically be a ploy to avoid tampering charges, Burke has always been very up front about his intentions and could’ve easily either skipped the question or answered with a generic “we will explore every possibility to improve our club.” Thus, I would be willing to bet my bottom dollar that Kovalchuk does not end up in a Maple Leaf uniform next season.

In the same article, LeBrun provides a brief update on the Kaberle trade talks, explaining that the number of inquiring teams has reached the double digits, though no serious offer has been made of yet. The only other high end puckmoving defenseman available is unrestricted free agent Sergei Gonchar, though rumors of his demand for a 3 year contract at age 36 could scare off potential suitors.

    @ Schenn:
Agree. While every GM and his dog are fighting over Kovalchuk BB will be sneaking Marleau in the back door.

Who said anything about the offseason? He’ll be a leaf after his first game, so i guess your right, he’ll be a leaf during the season. ;)

If you say so, prepare to be disappointed.
For your information, as soon as a player signs a contract with a team he is a member of their organization, regardless of whether he played a game or not.
Martin Skoula can claim that he was once a part of the greatest sports organization in the world, even though it was for less than 24 hours, haha!!

I’d be very surprised if Kovalchuk becomes a Leaf. I don’t think BB would give him the $$$ he would want. But I’m not worried, IMO BB has something else up his sleeve…can’t wait til the draft!!!

    Kovi won’t be a Leaf…PERIOD,
He’s Not a Brian Burke kinda player, and we all know this, regardless of whether you, personally are willing to admit it.
At this stage of the ‘Rebuild’..2 very good young players can be had,and developed for the price of ’1′ Kovi..and I think Brian Burke is intelligent enough to go that route and not totally upset the team that he’s building. For Now, I expect Kessel to be a highwater mark for salaries , with any new aquisitions maintaining the 5-6mil per year range and not pushing the team over,or dangerously close to the salary cap limit. Burke will NOT be handcuffed if some player he covets, comes along at a later date and a more reasonable salary request/expectation.

I just don’t know what Burke can do if he’s not going to land Kovalchuk. I think he’s more likely to get Kovalchuk than Marleau, in terms of interest from the player, and I just don’t see signing a couple 3rd/4th line grinders as being the equivalent of a draft.

Yeah we thought Burke had something up his sleeve last draft, and we were all disappointed…

I was really looking forward to having a “true” superstar on our team, I dont think Marleau warrants that. Kovi produces, it dosent matter which team he plays for, or who his centerman is. You can say that for a handful of player , unfortunately you can not say the same for Marleau, he has had up and down seasons, and has not always lived up to his duties (captaincy). Dont get me wrong, I will welcome him to centre some of our young guns to help raise their confidence and value.

We dont have any draft picks while we suck, we dont want to give up the young talent to acquire a superstar via trade, and we dont want to spend the money. BUT, we need a SUPERSTAR in Toronto now!

Im not a Berger Hater, and I really do have confidence in Burke, especially after the Phaneuf trade, it just gets a little frustrating and I NEED TO VENT!!!!!!!

Patrick Marleau is who Burke is going to throw the money at. I’ve said it all along, Kovalchuk isn’t what this team needs, but a big time C to play with Kessel and Sharp would give us a pretty nice top line.

Sharp-Marleau-Kessel… that would give us some legitimate offense.

I see no reason not to take Burke’s words at face value on this. It isn’t the first time he stated he wouldn’t pursue someone because of the price tag, and he stayed to his word on it.

He also has stated that we won’t pay that kind of money for someone, unless it was one of the top players in the NHL. He set his limit on Mike Cammalleri and let hm go by because he wouldn’t pay that much for a player.

I see no subterfuge in any of his actions. He said he won’t be in the race, and he won’t be. The only way Kovalchuk becomes a Leaf is if he wants to come here and wants to come in at Burke’s price. In other words, don’t hold your breath.

He’s smart, doesn’t use double-talk, and chooses his words VERY carefully. He isn’t someone to open himself up to ridicule by saying he won’t do something, and then do it while coming up with some lame excuse to justify the deception. I haven’t seen him do that once, and I doubt he’s about to start now.

So if you’ve already ordered your Kovalchuk sweater, you might want to try and cancel that order before it ships…

Kovalchuk around 7.5 will be a great signing, however BB has said on more than one ocassions that he is not interested.

Well ! BB is the GM and it is his decision who he wants to sign. That is why when the team he put together/ added to last year sucked, I lambasted him to the chagrin of many on this site. I would like that he make serious attempts to Land Kovalchuk but may be he knows something I certaily don’t know. Kovi though is as talented as they come.

I will eagerly await what BB can accomplish this off season in making headlines through trades and drafts instead of bluster bravado.

I believe Kabs or Kabs+ for Malone and 6th overall will be a good trade for us. Similarly I hope if we can land Bobby Ryan for Schen+ Grabs and sign Marlue if not Kovalchuk. I absolutely would hate BB for ever, if next year Boston gets another Lottery pick at our expense.

Look , I really believe burkie will make a strong pitch for kovalchuk. why ???? players like this do NOT come available often , and next years ufa crop isnt that great either. brad richards , joe thornton , jeff carter , alex semin , martin st.louis. after thinking about all these players , with ages and all stats , i still believe kovalchuk is best 1 to get. they know that as well. burkie CANT answer a reporters question about pending ufa’s as that is tampering. lebrun just stirring the pot , thats all.

I’m not getting my hopes up. It would be nice, someone as good as Kovalchuk signing here, I just don’t see it happening. Still to many holes to fill IMO to throw fistfulls of money at 1 guy. I think we’ll know much more on the night of the 25th. I think that will go along way to deciding what happens July 1.
