Leafs “Very Interested” in Patrick Sharp

According to the Daily Herald, the Toronto Maple Leafs and Columbus Blue Jackets are believed to have expressed serious interest in Chicago winger Patrick Sharp. The author explains that Sharp would likely bring the highest return of any of the Hawks’ players rumored to be on the trading block, in the form of a high draft pick of top prospect. One rival executive deemed Sharp to be “one of those players every team loves to have” and who has “no flaws in his game”.

The Toronto-Sharp connection has been red hot for over a year now, as the Daily Herald reported last summer that the Hawks and Leafs had already been discussing a potential swap. At the time, ESPN had speculated a return of an affordable defenseman along with a high end prospect. The 28 year old Sharp scored 25 goals and 66 points during the regular season, and stepped it up to the tune of 11 goals and 22 points during the Hawk’s Stanley Cup run.

No matter what Burke says to the media, I have to believe he is going after a big fish. As of today, he basically traded Taylor/Tyler and a first round pick for Kessel, we are in dire need of some scoring up front, and there is too much money tied up on the blue line. If he doesn’t go after Kovi or Marleau hard in the summer I’ll be very surprised. Inking one of them without giving up any assets is critical IMHO.So is a deal involving one of the D-men, whether that be Kabs or another high profile guy. But let me ask you this…Do you think Burke will ride out the season with what he’s got? Maybe trade Kabs and give the young players a year to prove what they have and let the chips fall where they may?

The leafs don’t need anymore kids than they already have. There going to have to fork out some cash for some older players and take a chance that they perfom in the up coming season. They have to quit wasting time on young prospects who are inconsistent in there play. Even if they sign a few 3 or 4illion dollar contracts on older prooven players they will have a much more consistant team with playoff potentail

    @ Esmits:
We had 4 months of playing kids last season…and you’re saying we have to stop already? Wtf is wrong with some ppl, the Leafs chances at a cup, are going to solely rely on how their youth is goin to perform and develop within the next 5 years. If you think a signing is going to be the end all be all solution to some growing pains, you are going to be very disappointed, shiet like that doesnt happen often, if ever. The new game is about youth, its obvious you havent figured this out yet though. I’d way rather develop a player like Kulemin or Bozak, and even now Kadri, then replace one of them with a 2nd tier free agent who will help us “get into the playoffs.” We’re done with the mediocrity of the Hagman’s, Stempniak’s, and Jason Blake’s of the world, now is time to grow from home with a buck here n there on 4th line depth, unless theres a bonafide star on the market, like a Kovie or Marleau (which is a possibility.)

Oh and for the record, Sharp is hardly a kid. He’s 28.

Sharp is someone. They need.but you got me all wrong here. Kids are the futre of this team. But we need a balance of young guns and vetrans. We need a few vets to keep the team calm and lead the rookies throught the season.
