Leafs “Very Interested” in Patrick Sharp

According to the Daily Herald, the Toronto Maple Leafs and Columbus Blue Jackets are believed to have expressed serious interest in Chicago winger Patrick Sharp. The author explains that Sharp would likely bring the highest return of any of the Hawks’ players rumored to be on the trading block, in the form of a high draft pick of top prospect. One rival executive deemed Sharp to be “one of those players every team loves to have” and who has “no flaws in his game”.

The Toronto-Sharp connection has been red hot for over a year now, as the Daily Herald reported last summer that the Hawks and Leafs had already been discussing a potential swap. At the time, ESPN had speculated a return of an affordable defenseman along with a high end prospect. The 28 year old Sharp scored 25 goals and 66 points during the regular season, and stepped it up to the tune of 11 goals and 22 points during the Hawk’s Stanley Cup run.

    @BDMan
Unless Kovy has serious team issues, I think it’s crazy not to do everything possible to bring him in. Considering he’s been captain of a few international tournys, seems he should be a decent team player…
    .
He should be our #1, #2, and #3 focus.

There is only 2 ways I see getting Sharp!
    1. Trade prospects straight up.
I dont like that idea; simply because we realy dont know the potential of our young guys.
    2. To Chicago-Kabs and Stallberg.
    To Toronto- Campbell and Sharp.
I posted this over a month ago; Chicago saves 6 mil. We get Sharp and Campbell. and I think
with a little tweak; we get Ladd too!
I know you guys dont like Campbell; But hey our D would be a wall that hits back and scores!
Chicago gets some cap relief but their D is still intact and they have a good prospect to play cheap.
    I think its doable! IMO!
Now saying that! If Kovy is coming to Town; Fuck Chicago!

Hell I like Campbell a lot, he hits, has a nasty streak and is fast as all get out. But Sharp isnt going anywhere.

Someone has to give the play-by-play on the conference, it’s a no go at work.

Campbell is a great defenceman but I can’t see Burke wanting him as he is signed for 6 more years and I thought Burkie said he wouldn’t go over 5.

I have always wondered about Skille, not quite as big as Bobby Ryan but his point totals in the AHL are close, comparable size and an RFA.

    @ Stay Gold Ponyboy:
agreed… I don’t see Sharp as such a great fit, he’s a really good player, but a lot of us are now itching for him in a trade just cause Chicago won the cup and he had a really good playoffs..
those factors shouldn’t be the reasons that he’s brought aboard by a trade

People are failing to realize with this whole Sharp talk that Chicago, although would love to keep him, can’t afford him. They can’t just trade Campbell due to his NTC. Seabrook’s contract I believe is up after next year… I’m positive he will be asking for a pay raise. Chicago still needs to sign 8 other players and as of right now are over the cap for next year. Chicago can’t just bury players in the minors like some have suggested. Like BB said, you do that and no FA or any player for that matter will want to sign with your club.

    @ peterbleafs:
I’d like to remind everybody what happened in Ottawa last summer, when the Senators were not in a position of strength when forced to make a trade for Dany Heatley.
GM’s from around the league low balled Bryan Murray because they knew that Heatley had to be traded. All they got was Jonathan Cheechoo (and his terrible $3.5M contract) who was assigned to the minors, and Milan Michalek (and his $4.3M) who got a whopping 34 points while playing largely with Spezza or Alfredsson. For a multiple 50 goal scorer!
Not only did Ottawa have to take back comparable salary but they came up way way short on the talent trade-off.
Chicago’s situation is not the same, but it is similar in that they must make some moves to shed salary.
