Phaneuf Named 18th Captain in Leafs History
Share

At an afternoon press conference at Real Sports Bar & Grill, the Toronto Maple Leafs made official the worst kept secret in the NHL by naming Dion Phaneuf the 18th captain in the club’s long and storied history (22nd if you count the St.Pats and the Arenas).

The Maple Leafs also unveiled the team’s new jersey design.  The new jerseys return the horizontal white stripes to the bottom of the sweater, in homage to past tradition.  For more on the new designs, please see Alec’s earlier post regarding the jerseys.

Maple Leafs GM Brian Burke, on the decision to give the captaincy to Phaneuf:

“Today is a very important day for the Toronto Maple Leafs. The Leafs have had many great players fulfill this role in the long history of the franchise, and we wouldn’t be taking this direction if we didn’t think it was absolutely the right step. We liked the impact Dion made with players, coaches and fans alike since his arrival and we consider him a building block toward future team success.”

Phaneuf joins a list of several of the most honored players in Toronto Maple Leafs, each sharing the distinction of wearing the “C” for one of the sport’s most-hallowed teams.

i REALLY hope Dion uses this as motivation to mature a bunch, and take the step to the next level, and get HIMSELF back into Norris trophy candidate form. He has it in him, and I think he is the perfect age to make the move. Get rid of any ‘Hollywood’ attitude that may (or may not) be in him, take the lead and work as hard as he can to emulate a guy like Pronger’s career.

All I know for certain is that our defense is just riddled with guys who don’t just take the body, they crush you. Schenn, Komi and Dion? Maybe Aulie in another year or two?? If 4 out of your 6 defencemen are all HUGE hitters, that is going to work well come playoff time.

If Schenn develops to his full potential (which I have a scary feeling we will get a good glimpse of this coming season), and Dion gets back to form (which he should as he is just now entering his prime), those 2 guys alone will take over games and anchor our top 2 D lines, eating up over 45 minutes of each game between them.

Gonna be a good year. And we haven’t even begun at Forward yet. That starts in 10 days. Can’t wait.

i’ll say no to Burish and his career 21pts , I don’t really want Plekanec but i’d much rather him and his 4 consecutive 20 goal seasons

At first giving DP the captaincy seems a little early but I just think having a captain that is a vocal leader and physically crushes people, can score and fight just gets me excited!

what if Burke did absolutely nothing and just waited out struggling teams half way through the season and poached players like he did last year with Dion et el

    @ 4evrblue:
Burish played a fringe role in Chitown because there were so many young stars. But he was very tough earlier in his career. Worth a try and will be cheap.

    @ Bring the Cup Home:
I like that they’re huge hitters as well. The only ? is whether they can move the puck well enough without Kaberle, and not take too many penalties. Case in point, Chicago with guys like Seabrook, Keith, and Campbell leading the way.

I’ll bet somebody $10 Burke gets Paul Martin (and moves Beauch and Thumb). A top-four of Phaneuf, Schenn, Komisarek, and Beauchemin when it comes to breakouts and the transition game.

Don’t get me wrong here, I love our corps. I just think you need a guy that’s strictly known as a puck-mover in your top four.

Or…in another direction…maybe Gunnar will turn out to be that guy.

    Either way I’m f***in psyched.

EDIT: Meant to say “A top-four of Phaneuf, Schenn, Komisarek, and Beauchemin scares me just a little when it comes to breakouts and the transition game.”

    @ LarryP:
you can check at the bottom of Page 3 for the rest of my argument against him. Aside from his stupid mouth I just dont think we need a guy like him here right now, he would just take ice time away from good kids that are fighting for it

    @ refaeL:
Do you think it will be that bad? I’ve seen a couple of decent passes from Dion and Schenn seemed to be growing more patient and confident with every game, we also have Gunner who can make a pretty good first pass. Granted that none of them have the same skill as kabby for springing a guy on a breakaway but i’m thinking that with a little from everybody it wont be that big of a loss.

you’re right. since we’ve been spoiled by having kaberle for SO long now, we don’t know what life is like without a guy who can move the puck with such ease. we’ve had kaberle doing that for us for what…..10 years.

we may realize how valuable he is after he’s gone.

but i do also agree that Dion and Schenn (and Gunnar) will combine to get the job done, just not as flashy and without that super HIGH level of skill. but responsible, with the specialty being on shutdown game and blasts from the point.

hopefully burkie can get a forward that can play the point on the PP also. that would make the loss of Kabs alot more bareable

    From TSN

Phaneuf leads all NHL defencemen in goals (77), power-play goals (48), game-winning goals (22) and shots (1237) since entering the league in 2005-06.

    Great news fella’s great news.

I just watched the video again today from the presser … if I had Wendel, Darryl and George sitting beside me as I was being introduced as the new Leafs captain especially after them mentioning tradition and history I think I would have had more to say and expressed my sheer gratitude of being given such an amazing opportunity to TRY and fill the shoes of such greats … I just didn’t get that from DP. He didn’t sound like much of a leader up there on the podium today … very uninspiration.
