Phaneuf Named 18th Captain in Leafs History
Share

At an afternoon press conference at Real Sports Bar & Grill, the Toronto Maple Leafs made official the worst kept secret in the NHL by naming Dion Phaneuf the 18th captain in the club’s long and storied history (22nd if you count the St.Pats and the Arenas).

The Maple Leafs also unveiled the team’s new jersey design.  The new jerseys return the horizontal white stripes to the bottom of the sweater, in homage to past tradition.  For more on the new designs, please see Alec’s earlier post regarding the jerseys.

See the full list of TML captains after the jump.

Maple Leafs GM Brian Burke, on the decision to give the captaincy to Phaneuf:

“Today is a very important day for the Toronto Maple Leafs. The Leafs have had many great players fulfill this role in the long history of the franchise, and we wouldn’t be taking this direction if we didn’t think it was absolutely the right step. We liked the impact Dion made with players, coaches and fans alike since his arrival and we consider him a building block toward future team success.”

Phaneuf joins a list of several of the most honored players in Toronto Maple Leafs, each sharing the distinction of wearing the “C” for one of the sport’s most-hallowed teams.

Last time I checked hockey is played on the ice, not in front of a microphone…but yeah, speech was meh, I idn’t really expect anything earth moving. Let his play do the talking next year.

I for one and damn proud he is our new captain and while I still prefer the old design without the stripe (I just do! sheesh) I look forward to later on this week when I go take my jersey in to get that C.

On the inevitable Kaberle situation comment, here is my two cents. Trade him for a couple of assets that allow us to get that up and coming top tier centreman and by that I mean no Brad Richards but someone like the following:

    Stephen Weiss FLA
    Jeff Carter PHI
    Sam Gagner EDM
    Mikko Koivu MIN

    Or someone of that ilk.

On a side note I would love to pick up PM Bouchard from the Wild. He was injured all year and has ups and downs but I think he is a player and the Wild are hurting for cap space.

WOW guys, way to blow the site up and give me something to read for a bit lol.
Anyways, someone said Lombardi is a replacement for Grabovski? I would MUCH rather have Grabo at 2.9 then Lombardi at 4-5? Thats so stupid. Hes just as small, and we just got rid of a cronic “painfully average” top 6 center in Stajan. Bozak, Grabo, Kadri, Mitchell will most likely be the centers.
Another thing, remember last time we heard “Leafs seriously interestd in _____”? from a reliable source? It was Kessel, and that deal was done like dinner, so I expect Sharp to be a leaf this summer. We all kow hes gonna sign 2 guys for the bottom 6 much like he signed the 2 defence last year (komi, beauch) and he said he was looking for Defence. He said hes looking for bottom 6 and a top 6. I 100% believe what Burke says in the media because he has never lied to us since being here.
    So enter:
    -Sharp
    2 of these type
    -Armstrong
    -Torres
    -etc
    Sharp-Bozak-Kessel
    Kulemin-Grabo-Stalberg/Caputi
    Torres-Kadri-Armstrong
    Orr-Mitchell-Sjos
    Hanson-Rosehill
    ——————————
    Phaneuf-Beauch
    Komi-Gunner
    Schenn-Finger
    Oreskovich
    —————–
    JSG
    Gus
Thats really how I see the team will fill out. All depends on who the UFA’s are. Based on Hanson and Oreskovich coming back at the same salary, Mitchell getting 800k, Kulemin @ 2.5, Armstrong and Torres at 2.4, that leaves us with about 2.5 mil cap space. That enough to make an offer to Marleau instead of Torres and bury Finger if he takes it then move Kulemin down to 3rd line and Marleau top 6
    Sharp-Bozak-Kessel
    Marleau-Grabo-Stalberg/Caputi

you can check at the bottom of Page 3 for the rest of my argument against him. Aside from his stupid mouth I just dont think we need a guy like him here right now, he would just take ice time away from good kids that are fighting for it

What about Asham? He creates space for his linemates and scores the odd goal.

    @ Jordan:
Like it but I would do this:
    .
    Marleau – Bozak – Kessel
    Kulemin – Sharp – Stalberg
    Torres – Kadri – Armstrong
    Caputi – Hanson – Sjos
    .

    Orr – Rosehill – Mitchell

4 potential scoring lines and we could use Orr sparingly depending on who we are playing and the need

are Hanson and Caputi not served better playing on the Marlies with more ice time and having Orr out there policing the situation instead of having Komi Schenn Dion torres armstrong dropping the mits, IMO anyway

Thats all depending on if we sign Marleau though. If not then no way we can give away Grabovski an expect our top 6 to be as productive. If Caputi is on the 4th line too, you might as well let him play with the Marlies. Sharp too years to develope so maybe he need more time too

Wendel was an incredible captain. Then he’d get the mike and he’d say “Mumble mumble forecheck, mumble mumble, keep getting shots on the mumble mumble mumble mumble mumble.”

I wasn’t impressed with Dion’s speech, but he’s hardly the first hockey player who was lousy on the mike.

I don’t understand all this talk of Dion being named Captain too soon. Why would Burke and Wilson wait until half way through the season or until next off-season to name him Captain, when they arleady know he is the leader of the team?

    @ zoonpolitikon:
Yup, thats a decent looking lineup as long as Marleau is willing to come to Toronto.
I’d almost rather keep Grabovski and use Kaberle to bring in Neal.
    Neal – Kadri – Kessel
    Marleau – Bozak – Stalberg
    Kulemin – Grabovski – Armstrong
    Sjostrom – Mitchell – Orr
(With Caputi and Hanson playing with the Marlies)

Also, why do some people think it is unreasonable to give all the letters to defensemen?
Do you guys not realize it was done last season with the Leafs to start the year with Kaberle, Komisarek and Beachemin wearing the A’s and after the Komisarek injury/Phaneuf trade they had Kaberle, Beachemin and Phaneuf with the A’s.
    .
I think it’s a great idea, if you put them all on different pairings you’ll always have a player wearing a letter on the ice.
    Phaneuf [C] – Schenn
    Gunnarsson – Komisarek [A]
    Beauchemin [A] – Finger

I know Sundin is probably hunkered down somewhere in vikingland but wouldn’t it have been kind of fitting to have him there as a ‘passing of the torch’? Maybe Mats is developing a Keon-rift with big blue?
Phaneuf will be a great captain and contend for the Norris-book it. Don’t listen to the so called ANALists. Yes, I capsed anal because they’re all asses.

Never mind the whiners in Calgary….they would complain about Gretzky slacking in his own end. This guy is a MONSTER, a great white SHARK. He needs to play all over the ice, just so he can scare the living bejesus out of all 6 opposition guys out there.
I can see it now, Ovetchkin or Malkin or Nash or whomever hits the ice, and Pheneuf tells him “Your ass is mine.” And it will be.
The only question I have about all of this is how the Sutters keep their jobs. Pheneuf makes roughly twice what the Flames are paying Stajan. That kinda puts it in perspective, doesn’t it.
The Leafs trading with the Flames since ’92….the gift that keeps on giving….”

Who attended the press conference and what was said by both Burke and Wilson maybe gives a few ideas of things to come and who they value.

Obviously, Schenn, Bozak and Kessel being there tells people that they are part of the future. They are not going anywhere in any trade. Also, both Burke and Wilson mentioned Komi and Beauch as leaders to support Dion. So from a rumour perspective, have to figure that none of those 5 guys will not be traded over the summer. Don’t panic about rumours including Schenn in trades or straight up trades with Beauch. It is possible that one of Komi or Beauch (if anyone Beauch due to his cap hit, length of contract term and ice time) could get traded at the deadline or over next summer.

Although I would like to see Bobby Ryan picked up (Kaberle and looks like if any deal it would include Kuli and a prospect). Burke said he didn’t want to talk about Kaberle or Kuli yesterday so maybe still issues and using Kuli to make bigger deal. Maybe prospect would include Stefanovich (as under contract). If not this deal then, bigger free agency deal. Don’t know if they would get Kovi (although I believe Burke wants that type of impact). I believe he could say that Ryan was the second pick only after Crosby and promote that hype… if he doesn’t get him, he would try and do a trade with Kaberle and others to land Patrick Sharp and then maybe sign Marleau.

Grabs is going to return to form next year and score 20+ goals. I want Sharp badly, and I think he’s the top choice of BB for the off-season, but what do we have to give up for him? Some goal depth (Reimer, etc.) and a late round pick for Sharp and salary (Sopel)? I just don’t know how BB’s going to get it done with him, but hey, I’m not a GM…

You’re baked like Ricky if you think that would be a mistake: he’s a leader and a complete player and wasn’t far behind Toews for the Conn Smythe. I think his value is way up (maybe even out of reach), but he’d be a perfect fit on this team.

A lot of people may disagree with me but I think Burke should seriously consider taking Campbell (Mr. Cap Space) from Chicago as long as they agree to include Sharp and Byfuglien in exchange for Kaberle and a NHL ready player (Stalberg, Caputi or Irwin) and a late round pick. This would achieve a few things; both teams get a puck moving defenceman, the Blackhawks would clear enough cap space to move forward thus preventing any other team from swooping in and taking advantage and the Leafs immediately move into contention land! The only problem is I haven’t crunched our Cap numbers to see if it is feasable.
