We’ve partnered up with Pension Plan Puppets to bring to you a Player Review series, where we will be evaluating and grading the 2009-10 season for every Leaf who featured in a significant number of games for the Blue and White last season, with an eye towards 2010-11. Next up we feature Tomas Kaberle, profiled by Chemmy:

“The Summary: Where to start with Tomas Kaberle? He’s a four time all star including the last three times the games were played. He’s second all time in scoring for Toronto Maple Leafs defensemen.

Kaberle’s scoring was instrumental in the Leafs first win of the season when he had a goal and four assists as part of a hot streak that saw him put up 22 points in his first 20 games. The opposite side of that coin is that to finish the season Tomas Kaberle scored two goals and had seven assists in 33 games; a stretch that saw the Leafs play 93 pt pace hockey. His slump started before the arrival of Dion Phaneuf but our new captain’s arrival begs the question: does Tomas Kaberle have a role on the Leafs in the future?

Interesting to note from Chemmy’s write-up:

The Ugly:

The truth is that Tomas Kaberle plays pillow soft minutes. At evens his stat line looks something like this:

QTEAM QCOMP +/-ON/60
0.038 -0.040 -0.30

Good teammates, bad opposition, Leafs being outscored.

The Discussion:

Should Burke trade Kaberle? Should Burke re-sign Kaberle? If you think Burke should re-sign him, what’s his role on this team moving forward?

Audience Participation:

Rate Kaberle below on a scale of 1-10 (10 being the best) based on his performance relative to his potential and your expectations for the season

Let’s give him a 5 year 30 mil deal with the Leafs and a 10 year 100 mil deal as a condo building maintenance man for MLSE…

One player Burke should go after is Peter Mueller I remember when everone was saying we should trade for him at the deadline……..Now we can get him for free because he is a ufa….I think he can only help our Leafs….He has skill and if he does not resign we should go after him……..will look good in the new uni

If he became a UFA by not being qualified you can bet your last dollar Burke will sign him, but since Colorado gave up Wolski to get him I highly doubt they will not lock him up.

    @ Garrett Bauman:

Sorry, I usually agree with your comments, but I think you are wrong here…Pits, Wash, TB, Det all have big money boys, but obviously there is a exception with the elite, crosby, malking ovi, kovi. Teams dont necessarily need an elite hockey player, but teams that do have them, can cover their payroll and win a Cup. We are the Mecca of Hockey, we need an elite player!

And about pits D, their payroll was close to ours.

    Orpik 3.75mill
    Letang 3.5mill
    Golig 1.83 mill
    Gonch 5. mill
    Eaton 2. mill
    Leopold 1.8 mill

    Total Approx 18 mill

Without Kabs and Finger, and say we get a dman in return worth 2 mill, we are still at 20mill. And Pits has 2 guys making 8.7 million..

WE ARE ASKING FOR ONLY ONE!

Where did you find that picture of Kaberle, it’s a rare gem in that it’s a photo of him taking a shot! That doesn’t happen very much.

Sign Arron Asham. Almost as tough as Orr and a much better player. He is a warrior and would be great on the 3rd or 4th line.

    I’d be all for this.
