We’ve partnered up with Pension Plan Puppets to bring to you a Player Review series, where we will be evaluating and grading the 2009-10 season for every Leaf who featured in a significant number of games for the Blue and White last season, with an eye towards 2010-11. Next up we feature Nazem Kadri, profiled by Chemmy:

“The Summary: This is the kid we wanted. Nazem Kadri is a talented prospect with slick hands and a flair for dramatic moves that have completely embarassed defenders in the OHL.

He played one game in the NHL this year as an emergency recall against the San Jose Sharks where he was a minus one and didn’t record a shot on net. Kadri represents our hopes as Leafs fans but it’s important to temper your expectations: Kadri isn’t the next Crosby and has a lot of work to do as a player and an athlete before he’s ready to be our first line center.

Generously listed at 175 pounds the first obvious work Kadri has to do is putting on muscle. In the OHL he’s a slick enough player to literally dance through defenders but that’s not going to fly in the NHL.

Kadri also needs to adjust to the pro game in that he’ll be surrounded by better players than he plays with in juniors. Actually on second thought maybe not… but Kadri will need to use his teammates more instead of trying to do it all himself. If he can land a job on the first line he’s going to be playing with a pure shooter in Phil Kessel.

Audience Participation:

Rate Kadri below on a scale of 1-10 (10 being the best) based on his performance relative to his potential and your expectations for the season.

Deal that makes a ton of sense for all involved based on need, $ and contract term:
Kaberle to Philly for Carter. Philly saves $750k and uses it towards a raise for Asham and don’t have to exhaust their top 4 D in the playoffs. Also, Giroux showed he can be a go-to guy when it matters. Leafs get a young scorer who can be a legit #1 C.
Or the deal I mentioned earlier today in the Kaberle thread:
Kaberle to Buffalo for Kassian & 1st; Buff 1st and mid prospect to Chicago for Sharp and Sopel. I’d be very happy for either.

PS – not all $750k goes to Asham.

How much and where Kadri plays depends on the type of UFA signings Burke can make, If he gets his hands on Kovalchuk (I know he probably won’t) or some one in the high cap range, Kadri plays with the Leafs forsure, if he only ends up with Bottom six players Kadri goes to the minors, I think with Kadri’s skill level, you only use him in the top two lines, with those type of minutes, so if not with the Leafs, then the Marlies are going to have a killer number one centre.

Check out this write up by Mike Ulmer on mapleleafs.com. He had an interview with Jerry D’Amigo. Damn this kids a winner. I hope he turns out to be decent 2-3rd line player.

I’ll be super pissed if all we get for Kaberle is Stafford + 1st. Balls to that. Keep him if that’s the case.

    @ refaeL:
Forget Stafford – go for Kassian and use the first to provide future value to Chicago for Sharp an the dump of Sopel. Send back a ‘Big 4′ Marlie as cheap D labour.

Dreger was just on TSN with the Insider — 8 teams have shown interest in Kaberle…. could rise to 10 or more, but offers will probably not be tabled until the night before the draft and draft day….

This is going to be crazy

    @ The Captain:
Really? We could just send Kaberle somewhere for straight up picks and then use then to get Sharp instead. I would rather that if all we could get is Stafford +1st

Add Kassian and its a deal. Thats what Burke wanted from the start actally and I bet they do it. You know Kaberle would stay with them because it super close to Toronto. I think thats fair
    Kaberle

    Stafford+Kassian+1st

    @ The Captain:
Kaberle is absolutely worth that to a team that could resign him. 50+ point defensemen don’t exactly grow on trees.
    .
Any way you look at it, Stafford is replaceable, Kassian is replaceable (perhaps to a lesser extent), and the 1st is a bit of a crapshoot.

    @ TuckerThomas:
I think just about every player in the NHL is one race to negate an icing away from a season ending knee surgery. I really don’t believe getting injured after smashing into the boards has anything to do with how tall you are.

    @ Bob is your uncle:
We’re talkin about Zack Kassian here, its not gonna sink their franchise, sure he has value with the upside of becoming a solid power forward, but you have to give some to get some. He could very well turn out to be Mark Bell. Kaberle is a 4 time all-star, i doubt they hesitate if they want him.

    This from Howies Blog-

“The post-Stavro era has not been marked by niggardliness; the Leafs, in fact, have spent lavishly for both executive and playing personnel.” -Howard Berger.

I understand the word but it is generally not well received and should be avoided when writing.
