Nathan Horton on the Block?

So let’s get this straight: Burke wants a top six winger with some size who can score. Ideally, that player is young enough to fit into the team’s long-term core and plays with the kind of aggressive, up-tempo forechecking style the Leafs hope to one day employ. What if he were an Ontario kid, a former 3rd overall pick, and figures to be on the trading block? Bonus!

According to the Sun Sentinel, Horton’s agent would “not be surprised” if Nathan were dealt between now and the draft, as his no-trade clause kicks on July 1st. He had spoken with new Panthers’ GM Dale Tallon and has confirmed that while the team does like Nathan as a player, nobody is untouchable. Horton’s contract currently has 3 years left at a very affordable $4 million cap hit, but he has struggled to stay healthy over the past two seasons. He had a forgettable ’08-’09 campaign with just 45 points in 67 games played, but bounced back to score 57 points in 65 games played last season. Still just 25 years of age, Horton still carries that potential to be a 30-40 goal scorer in the right situation and a change of scenery should do him well.

    @ BloodonIce:
It was only a one year deal though so I am wondering if that means he could be had for a low cost longer term guy. Hell I’d trade both Hanson and Mitchell for him.

@ SASH :P hilly would be adding like 4 mil in salary. Not sure they would do that. Plus I don’t think bb has the confidence in monster to take the reigns next yr by himself. This is the yr for Gus to take the lead. If giggy is still considered our number one by the end of this season expect him to resign a short term deal at a lower cap hit.
Point is, Gus needs to prove he’s number one before we consider shipping giggy.

And he will come cheap instead of having $3.5 million sitting in street clothes like Finger was last year. With those cap savings, you can spend to augment the forward position.

Good point! In fact Finger might be a better option on a injury/call up basis as he’s got NHL experience, and his salary would most likely be offset by the defenseman who’s injured (unless it’s Gunnarsson).

Finger spent so much of his career in the AHL and broke out a few years ago to earn a big contract. Do you think he’d be miserable playing for the Marlies or would he be all business and possibly be a good veteran presence down there?
I always like Phil Oreskovic for his effort and toughness. He’s one of those guys who is as good at the NHL level as he is at the AHL level IMO. Kinda like how Bozak didn’t really impress us until he played on the big club.
I don’t know that Oreskovic has much more room for improvement so he might only be a minor leaguer / pressbox / injury callup, whatever. Destined to become a journeyman? Either way, I think he’ll play his heart out when given the chance and will put the team ahead of himself and block shot, hit, clear the crease and stand up for his mates.
Knowing Burke, and seeing as he has his “big four”, I would not be surprised if he let Oreskovic walk in order to give him a chance with another club, without even trying to get anything in return for him. Burke wants people to know he’s fair like that because he sees it as being good for attracting players.

If something can be arranged, I’d love to have him here. I think the Wild are pretty intent on giving him one last shot though.

Finger should be a lesson to other players not to sign contracts that are way too expensive for what you are worth as it could be the reason you end up not playing in the cap world.

I think that will be a tough sell to any one who spent that many years in the minors making very little. Who is going to give up what might be the only chance at a big payday?

Yup and also how much money they can make or have to forgo, Its an easier decision if you are taking 6.5 instead of 8 million as a 23 year old compared to 3.5 and 2 as a 28 year old.

Put him on re-call waivers and see of another team takes him for half price.

I’m not sure that’s such a good idea. I’d rather not have $1.750M counting against our cap for the next 2 years for nothing.

If Lou signs Kovy then Parise will be dealt its a simple matter of numbers you cant have two #1 left wingers and you cant pay two guys in the same position 6 mill +++++.

Why exactly can’t a team pay two people that play the same postion more than $6 million each.
Last time I checked, Pittsburgh pays Crosby and Malkin almost $9 milllion each and both are centers.
A bit different, but Chicago pays two defensmen over $6 million each in Keith and Campbell.
Detroit pays more than six million to Datsyuk and Zetterberg, although Hank is known to play LW sometimes. They also pay more than $6 million to Lidstrom and $6 million to Rafalski.
The Candiens pay more than $6 million for Gomez and $6 million for Cammalleri, both centers.
Philly pays more than $6 million to each of Timonen and Pronger.
Last season San Jose had more than $6 million tied up in Thornton and Marleau, although Marleau played LW for te majority of the season and it looks like they’re letting him walk this summer.
After next season, Tampa is in danger of paying two centers more than $6 million, if they can’t find a way to move Lecavalier’s contract.
Also, if Washington can’t find a new home for Semin, they’ll be paying him and Ovechkin $6 million or more each next season.
    .
Although you might have meant paying LWers more than $6 million, as NJ already has Elias under contract for $6 million, with Kovalchuk up for UFA this summer and Parise up for RFA next summer. I believe if NJ was going to clear up room on LW, they’d be moving Elias before Parise, just my thinking though.

    @ Schenn:
I should have said paying two top line left wingers, if you think Parise would want to re-up knowing he would always be battling Kovy for the top spot and spotlight, I’m not so sure. Comparing the situation to Pittsburgh dosnt work because often times Malkin will switch to the wing many times and even defence on the pp. Thus evening out there ice-time, with kovy on the team Parise’s ice-time would go down. I can agree that Elias would be rather moved over Parise but then you have to look at who’s going to bring you the better return and the peices left in bringing in Kovy in the first place. I am just saying dont rule out a trade like that Burke could make it work lol.
