Halak Dealt to Blues

TSN has reported that goaltender Jaroslav Halak has been acquired by the St. Louis Blues. Thus far there is no report on the return, but Halak has recently aided the Canadiens in reaching the Stanley Cup Conference Finals. Dealing him when his value is high could be either beneficial or disastrous should Carey Price not be able to handle the load. The Habs received Lars Eller and Ian Schultz in return.

Lars Eller:

Eller was drafted 13th overall in the 2007 NHL Entry Draft. He is a 6’1″ 200lbs Danish center who spent the year between the Blues and their affiliate, Peoria Riverman. In his 70 games with Peoria, Eller posted 18 goals and 57 points with 84 penalty minutes. In his 7 appearances with the Blues, he scored two goals.

Ian Schultz:

A 6’3″ 210lbs right winger for the Calgary Hitman, Schultz is known for his aggressive play, ability to score and his fighting. In his final year with the Hitman, Schultz posted 24 goals, 55 points and 150 penalty minutes. He was selected 87th overall in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft by the Blues.

Do you think the Habs got enough in return for a goaltender who helped them reach the Eastern Conference Finals?

I think this is a cap issue for the Habs to sign someone else. Also, weird that the Blues had not talked to Halak’s agent or him about any negotiations (Halak interviewed on TSN yesterday saying he did not know this was coming and shocked so therefore, definitely NO negotiations!!)

I think Burke and his crafty team may be the best at cap management and we will really see the results over the next 1-3 years. Look at how the Leafs deals are structured:

On defense, Komi is a $4.5m cap hit but is paid 6m this year, 5.5m next year then 3.5m each year in 2012/13 and 2013/14. Beauch is $3.8m cap hit but $3.55m this year and $3.65m next year. He has definitely positioned trade capabilities if he brings in others or one or more of the big 4 Marlies are ready late this year or next year. Think he has structured this for the mid-market teams who will be no where near the cap or worry about it but do worry about cash flow. Komi would be a $4.5m cap hit but only cost a team $3.5m per year in a few years time so would look very attractive (and maybe positioned to exit based on Luke and Aulie(?) readiness. Same with Beauch late this year? Any thoughts?

Also, based on that same logic, Grabo either is traded in a package deal now over the next few weeks or he is here for a while as a keeper (as Burke did deal with him and salary going up next year). Look at the young prospects, guys like Dido get raises in 2nd year and other destined minor leaguers only have their salaries flat).

    Again, any thoughts on this?

Also do think Burke would love to get Ryan and will definitely try and package something via another team (probably already identifying what it would take committed from the Ducks and then trying to work the others to make it happen).

7 days till the draft, here’s hoping Burkie makes some noise in LA…. I’m really getting the feeling now that Burke is going to get some good offers for Kabs, teams are definitely interested which is awesome!.. I think Buffalo really wants him but we’ll see if they pony up with the best offer

Yes, no offers of yet.. but the interest or “kicking tires” is very promising….. I just think it’s looking very good for us, Burke will get the deal that he likes…

is anyone else here still in shock that Montreal did not get a roster player in this deal?…. they could’ve easily demanded Perron….lol.

good I think conference final good the kid they drafted this year in the 1st rd was a top 5 pick but refused to play any where in the O but Kitchener. Skinner will be a mid 1st rd pick at the NHL draft I assume I know his stock went up

Could be an interesting season in the west. Playoff spots might be a little wide open. In the O things sure can change fast.

yes so true it all depends on who sticks with the big clubs( nhl) and who gets sent back, you gotta think Windsor might suffer a bit London who knows there always good. Those are the 2 teams I’m always concerned about anyway.

the last 10 years the Hunters have put together an unbelievable run, i think they’ve never missed the playoffs won some championships, sent numerous great players to the NHL, I can’t see this trend ending anytime soon. also they have a great facility I went to game 7 vs Kitchener this year and it was great I didn’t think the JLC was that big

Since they bought the team they missed the playoffs the very first season and never since then. They have done a good job of selling prospects that they will be scouted heavily in London. The JLC doesn’t hurt either having like 3000 people on the waiting list for seasons tickets.

At the start of the year Halak’s value was much lower since he didn’t just lead his team to the Conference Finals, so no I wouldn’t have thought Burke got the better deal.
    .
However, lets say the Leafs had Eller (would have been possible if not for the Toskala trade) and Schultz in our system and we made the exact same trade the Blues made, I would definelty be thinking Burke was a genuis.
However, a starting goalie is not what the Leafs need, since we already have Giguere and Gustavsson, so the deal would have never been made. That being said, this deal makes a ton of sense for the Blues.
