Cox: Leafs Eying Hamhuis, Sharp, Horton

According to the Toronto Star‘s Damien Cox, the Maple Leafs have targeted three potential players to bolster their lineup heading into next season.

For starters, the club is poised to make a run at impending unrestricted free agent defenseman Dan Hamhuis. Hamhuis is a good all-around defenseman who plays 21-22 minutes a night, makes a decent first pass, and can contribute a little bit in the offensive zone. His calling card is predominantly solid, if unspectacular even strength play, while eating up a ton of ice-time against the opposing team’s top lines. Still just 27 years of age, Hamhuis ranked 6th among NHL defenseman in takeaways last season. The potential link to Toronto is interesting because you’d think they’d already have enough money tied up on the blueline when Hamhuis could potentially be looking at upwards of $3 million on a long-term deal.

The team is also said to be kicking the tires on wingers Nathan Horton and Patrick Sharp, none of whom are strangers to the trade rumor mill. As mentioned previously, Horton has a no-trade clause that goes into effect on July 1st, which may motivate Panthers’ GM Dale Tallon to move the underachieving youngster at the draft. Meanwhile, Sharp is garnering plenty of interest around the league after an impressive point-a-game Stanley Cup run, but it’s likely that Chicago will exhaust all other possible trade alternatives before deciding to trade their valuable two-way forward.

It’s funny you just said that…my girlfriends cat (hmmm…I guess it’s mine too) is driving me CRAZY right now. Don’t give me any ideas! ) I guess what you said is what this is all about. Maybe people are tired of people like me going on about the trade but I’m tired of people saying that it doesn’t matter. It does matter. We all learn from the past. Or we should. If Burke is successful with his plan to rebuild the Leafs this way I believe he would be the first to do so. Does anybody want to offer any other examples of teams that have done it this way? I can’t think of any but maybe somebody can point them out. maybe it will help me feel better about the trade.

There is only one way to skin a cat! Rip And Pull!

And I’m getting the Kessel and Yzerman surgeries this summer.

Kessel and Yzerman? They had different surgeries. Yzerman had the same surgery as Van Ryn.

    @ keon:
I’m getting both. A wedge in the knee and full shoulder. Not sure when or if both at same time or what.

My guess is Burkie will be waiting as long as he can til the draft so his deal(s) will be fresh to take some heat off of Bostons draft. I’m happy with Kessel, very happy. But there is no way to avoid the feeling on the 25th when Boston takes the stage. (Unless Burkie blows the roof off the joint!) Here’s hoping!

Sounds rough brother. But you’re a Leaf fan, you’re made of steel. You have to be to put up with some of the stuff we have. You’ll be good.

Just a quick question – if the Leafs offered Kadri and L. Schenn for Edmonton’s #1 pick – would the Oilers accept? Or would the Leafs make this offer? Seriously, I have questioned this move both ways – and don’t have an answer! As a Leaf fan, I would say “go for it!”

  • Bring the Cup Home

i would say no. i think both kadri and schenn will develop into VERY solid players. yes, maybe taylor hall is a future superstar, but maybe not.

i would not do that deal.

  • Kinger

    @ Grahamzky:

Hell no Burke would laugh, they would be getting a hard nose stay at home defenseman future top 2 pairing IMO and possibly Captain material, and Kadri just no way He will be one of our centers for a long time I hope, he is a more grittier then Hall or Seguin, and and can score like them and imo will play a move all around better game, thats what I think anyways. If we made the trade we would be losing 2 strong building blocks for our organization.

    5th overall
    7th overall
    for
    1st overall

    I pass.

Glad you feel that way – cause I don’t think it will happen! I want to, as you do, keep Kadri – he is under-rated! Kadri plus a “stay at home” d-man for Hall? I feel that Hall is a sure-fire super-star in the league – - a Mike Bossy, Ilya Kovalchuk – and would hate to lose him for a potential solid player (Kadri) – and a stay-at-home d-man (Schenn)!
Where they were drafted – does it really matter? Scouts make mistakes! Still I could go either way on this! Tough decision !

    @ Grahamzky:
I disagree with you on this one. I don’t see Hall being a superstar in the NHL at all. While it is definetly possible for him to become a superstar, I belive Seguin will be the better of the two.

I see “super-star” written all over Hall! So what you are saying is that you would draft Seguin before Hall? Somehow I doubt this will happen! Especially when I get the feeling, and I could be wrong, that Hall would love Edmonton, and Seguin, well, not so sure! Me? Hall #1; Seguin #2; Gudbrandson $3! (spelling?
After that Fowler, Connolly – and who knows? Will the Leafs get the Blue Jackets #4 pick?

Leafs won’t get the 4th overall nor want it IMO, just a rumor, Well even if Burke does want it, It won’t help us RIGHT NOW, so that makes me think he dont, and yea Hall COULD be a superstar, we don’t know, but more then 1 hyped for sure star has failed to reach the hype, and, even IF Lowe wanted to take Seguin, there is waaaay to much pressure on him to take Hall IMO anyways, either way they will be getting a good player, how good? only time will tell, but I will keep Schenn/Kadri over one of them any day.
