Cox: Leafs Eying Hamhuis, Sharp, Horton

According to the Toronto Star‘s Damien Cox, the Maple Leafs have targeted three potential players to bolster their lineup heading into next season.

For starters, the club is poised to make a run at impending unrestricted free agent defenseman Dan Hamhuis. Hamhuis is a good all-around defenseman who plays 21-22 minutes a night, makes a decent first pass, and can contribute a little bit in the offensive zone. His calling card is predominantly solid, if unspectacular even strength play, while eating up a ton of ice-time against the opposing team’s top lines. Still just 27 years of age, Hamhuis ranked 6th among NHL defenseman in takeaways last season. The potential link to Toronto is interesting because you’d think they’d already have enough money tied up on the blueline when Hamhuis could potentially be looking at upwards of $3 million on a long-term deal.

The team is also said to be kicking the tires on wingers Nathan Horton and Patrick Sharp, none of whom are strangers to the trade rumor mill. As mentioned previously, Horton has a no-trade clause that goes into effect on July 1st, which may motivate Panthers’ GM Dale Tallon to move the underachieving youngster at the draft. Meanwhile, Sharp is garnering plenty of interest around the league after an impressive point-a-game Stanley Cup run, but it’s likely that Chicago will exhaust all other possible trade alternatives before deciding to trade their valuable two-way forward.

    @ peterbleafs:
Could you imagine signing Kovalchuk and turning Kaberle and Grabovski into a top 6? Any top 6 too, I dont care who. Pominville, Sharp, Clowe WHHOEVER
    Kovalchuk-Bozak-????
    Kulemin-Kadri-Kessel
    Torres-Hanson/Mitch-Caputi/Stalberg
    Orr–Hanson/Mitch-Sjos
    Phaneuf-Beauch
    Komi-Gunner
    Schenn-Aulie/mikus/holzer
    JSG
    Gus
    ——————-
That lineup leaves 6.4 mil for the last player to be added which is the top 6 from kaberle and Grabovski

You have to rememeber what value they will get back though. They are so close to the cup who cares what happens in a few years really. Briere is ready to go now

Hartnell can be had for a good prospect and I would think Mikus or Holzer would be almost good enough. Maybe a 3rd rounder on top of that. Philly needs a very cheap but solid defensive defenseman and someone to take on a $4.2 million contract.

    @ Cameron:
I agree that he wouldn’t want to leave, I disagree that it’s irrelevant. I don’t know that PHI would be in any hurry to move Carter before first trying other options. He was hurt when he played wing, but is he really a bad winger I don’t know. Better centre sure. Success one year gaurantees very little the next, but I would think that PHI might be poised to be a perenial playoff team. I still don’t know that waiving a no trade is out of the question, just not so sure.

    @ rockydundas:

I definitely agree that you need the guys on their rookie contracts to contribute, but I have no reason to beleive that Kadri won’t be one of those guys. A trade isn’t necessarily all who got what, it’s about how the organization is set up to do deal with the future contracts. I hate to use Burke quotes to defend Burke, but as he’s said before, he felt we were in a position to make the trade because we had drafted high in the 1st round the two years before. Bozak, Gustavsson and friends made it a much easier choice. If Phil can put out 40+ goals a year when we get him a top C, it makes his contract look nice cap wise. We can afford to risk paying him that contract when we have guys like Kadri waiting to come up. I guess what I am trying to say is, you don’t have to have everybody on a rookie contract. A mix of the two will keep you under the cap and let you trade for a KNOWN commodity, rather than hoping a draft pick will develop.

    How’s about:

Grabovski to Minnesota for their 2nd (-2.5)
    D’Amigo + 2nd to Philly for Hartnell (+4.2)
Kaberle, Kulemin to Pitt for Staal, (-2)
    Sign Kovalchuk(+8)

    +7.2M

    Hartnell Bozak Kessel
    Kovalchuk Staal Kadri
    Sjostrom Dido Stalberg

At least someone can make some sort of realistic deals. But I dont see Pitts trading Staal. Doesnt make sense. If they deal a center it has to be Malkin.

    @ Jordan:
Man it’s tough posting with a Blackberry (more than I thought). I agree he is unlikely to go anywhere, with his NTC and his big contract. I’m playing devil’s advocate here, and am trying to temper my hope for getting Carter. There are teams looking for depth down the middle. There are some places I could fathom Briere willing to go to. I don’t think PHI would want much for him considering they have 3 solid centres without him, so it would allow them to invest that bad contract in another perhaps. I think Briere turned in a performance he’s unlikely to repeat but of course I could be wrong. Just sayin’, who knows.

    @ TuckerThomas:
If PHI sees Briere like you do than of course Carter’s the odd man out. I started this whole thing asking if you”d prefer to keep Briere over Carter. I guess I liken Briere to Gomez and would rather have neither on my team as a go to guy. I think Carter, healthy, will make a bigger impact than Briere next time around, sounds like you think Briere isn’t going to disappear, fair enough.
    And his no trade
    And his salary.
    :-)

BTW no way in hell he signs Ryder.

No, no, no. I know that. I was comparing situations between the Leafs and the Bruins. They signed guys like Ryder to huge contracts and therefore couldn’t afford Kessel. I used Ryder’s name as a comparison to how we would feel if the roles were reversed and we had to trade Kadri the way the B’s had to trade Kessel. Man…you’re right though…Burke BETTER not sign Ryder!
    .
Sorry though. I’m still convinced we were better off going the traditional route and holding on to our picks and being patient. I don’t see a lot of other teams throwing first around in an attempt to rebuild and you haven’t pointed any out either. Oh well.

    @ rockydundas:
Yup, like I said before, imagine this.
Its 2012, the leafs are a contending team again. Kulemin, Kessel, Bozak, Phaneuf, Schenn and Kadri YOU NAME IT even JSG is ripping it up. Kadri comes in and is exactly what we wanted. Breaks out in his 2nd-3rd year and scores 35-40 goals and is one of the best young players in the league. We make the playoffs and are promising, but get knocked out in the second round because of lack of experience. We then lock up out vezna goalie (thomas= JSG), our star veteran center (Savard=UFA we sign) and we are all ready to make a SERIOUS run next year. Burke is amazing and everyone loves him. He has this team competing again!
Then…………..a little disagreement on the price to bring Kadri back make a bunch of rumours go around. Before you know it, our young all star we drafted and brought up ourselfs is traded for picks. Fucking picks when our team is ready to win now.
We have a horrible time scoring the next year because we lost 35+ goals for nothing to help us, and after a small run to the 2nd round, we go on an MAKE HISTORY FOR THE WORST LOSER EVER! Our window is gone. That small window where we had eveerything perfect is gone. Our players are getting old, and others no chemistry…….all for some picks. Some picks to start the whole process over again……
Imagine guys……imagine……im getting chills and trying to think how pissed I would be.

    @ Jordan:
Thanks Jordan! You put it so much better! LOL! You made me feel a lot better about the deal when you posted this although I still feel that it was made a couple years too early and would have been better if it was done when we had more prospects in the system and better insulation on the team already. I’m all for it if it works, but like I said, simply enough, not sure it was worth the gamble knowing that it is unconventional, somewhat unproven and risky. Especially knowing that simply being patient is a far more tried and true method of developing a winner. That’s how this whole mess got started! :-)

    @ rockydundas:

Being patient worked for Pittsburgh, Washington and Chicago. Fine. Columbus though, has been patiently missing the playoffs for years now. So have Atlanta and Florida. LA is finally getting somewhere, but they have been a young, rebuilding team for what, 8 years now? Sucking and drafting high isn’t always the way to go.
