Scratch Hamhuis Off The List

Looks like the Halak trade may have opened up the floodgates.  At least, it has for the Nashville Predators, who announced two separate trades today.

The Predators dealt the rights to defender Dan Hamhuis and a conditional draft pick in 2011 to the Philadelphia Flyers in exchange for former Predator Ryan Parent.  Hamhuis, strongly rumoured to be a target of the Flyers all the way back to the trade deadline, was also rumoured to be on the Leafs‘ wish list.  The value of the conditional pick be dependent upon whether the Flyers are able sign Hamhuis.

In a separate deal, also announced today, the Predators traded veteran centre Jason Arnott to the New Jersey Devils for 22-year old winger Matt Halischuk and a second round pick.  That’s a larger return than most would expect for the 35-year old Arnott (who previously played for the Devils from 1997-2001), and is perhaps a signal that the Devils are serious about gearing up for another Cup run in 2010/11.

    @ Garrett Bauman:

Well, if that is the case in regards to Philly’s interest in Kaberle, I can’t see why they can’t wait till the morning of June 25th to get Kaberle. If Kaberle’s preference is to stay in the East and play for a contender, how the heck can he not want to sign an extension with a team that was just in the Finals and clearly wants to upgrade their lineup to get right back their next June.
    .
If Kaberle is dealt in principal to Philly on June 25th but refuses to sign an extension (ala Chris Pronger last summer after he was dealt to the Flyers), then he is more two-faced than what the media and fans seem to make him out to be.
    .
And good on Burke to look elsewhere other than Philly. You think Habs fans would have wanted that chance to explore more options before Halak was dealt to the Blues?
    .
I know Brian is looking for a scoring winger, but Burke said he will take the best player offered. If he is indeed being offered up Carter, that proposal will be too difficult to pass up.
    .
Think about it. Carter and Kessel (+ whoever you want to sub on the wing) anchoring your first line? That takes the pressure off a Bozak-Kadri 1-2 punch for the center ice position. That is a lot to expect those two young kids to anchor the 1st and 2nd lines and bring the team that much closer to a playoff spot.
    .
I think Burke is keen to know after watching this past season that the current offence on the roster will not get them to the playoffs. Getting a under-25 centre stud in Carter will get them a whole lot a hell closer to the playoffs. I would be more than satisfied to see Kadri start off with the Marlies and let Carter and Bozal anchor the 1st and 2nd lines.

    @ dontdoit:
There is no such thing as too much depth.
    .
Also, Kaberle is 3 years younger than Timonen, and 4 years younger than Pronger … he would be able to ease the burden for those two and help keep them more fresh. Add Coburn in the mix and that’s one heck of a top 4.

And sorry. I meant Pronger DID agree to sign an extension with the Flyers after being dealt there. Something Kaberle should do if dealt there. If not, he and his agent will never be trusted in their public words again.

I am not so sure Carter is a gritty player. He has a big frame and he lays the body ocassionally, but I have not seen him taking a hit and making a play. Now it is not a must to take a hit to make a play, but gritty players at times do take hits while making plays.

Cater is yet to earn his stripes in a play-off series. This year he had two goals in a dozen play-off games. one of the two goals was an empty netter. Injuries may have hampered him in the play-offs this year, although apparently, when he played his skating looked fine. All analysts on TSN and other media outlets criticised his lack luster play. In short this year he was unable to find that special play-off gear.

Having said this, if it is the best deal BB can make, I will be fine with it. At this juncture, Carter is much more valuable for our team than Kabs. As I said before, we will still need to make a few deals other than the Kabs deal to make our roster better.

Still scratching my head as to all the supposed hype about Kabs by other GM’s.

Sure, some are likely interested, but nowhere near the level at what folks on this thread seem to think. Burke knows that, the other 29 GM’s know that–geez, a 31yr old possibly now starting on the decline side of his career, very very soft, defensively questionable and one who will want a big raise come 2011 simply because he is a pmd–and also one who seems to want to go to only 3 or so teams.

Kabs alone will most likely bring us surprisingly little, so he needs to packaged with 1-2 others — Kuli for eg –in order to entice a more reasonable deal

The ticket that the other 29 teams want is Luke-not Kabs–and assuming Kadri is off limits, they might secondarily covet Gunnersson and d’Amigo……Kabs on his own isn’t likely to entice very much

Between Luke and Kadri, if I had to give 1 up it would be very little offense Luke.

At the end of the day, I doubt BB trades either Luke or Kadri.

BB is now a victim of his own recent successes–everyone now expects him to pull a rabbit from the hat re Kabs–ain’t gonna happen

    @ daniel marois:
Burke’s looking at a lot of different scenarios … half the league is interested so there are a lot of options. Philly is just one of many interested parties … but just so happens to be one whose interest was leaked.
    .
To its credit it is a realistic possibility … very realistic … but there are surely others which are equally possible also. So, who knows if it happens or not? The one thing we do know is, as you suggested, Burke won’t jump at the first good offer he sees. He’ll mull it over while he continues to shop around, and re-visit it if nothing better is available. He may even extend Kaberle if none of the talks with interested teams come to fruition.
    .
It’s key to remember how the game of telephone works — nothing has leaked about any actual offers. All that was mentioned was the Flyers were interested and the Leafs were receptive to their interest. People need to be careful not to assume anything greater than that is going on (yet).

If I had to guess at what might be talked about between Toronto and Philly…here are some guesses:

Holmgrem – Say Burkie, would you do this deal?
To: TOR: Gagne + Patrick Maroon + Boucher
    To Philly: Kaberle + Gustafsson

Burke – Paul! Buddy! Whatever you’re drinkin’ will likely kill your liver! How about this?
To Philly: Finger + Grabovski + Giggy
To TOR: Carter + Hartnell + Leighton

Holmgren – Pffffttt! You always break me up Bri ! Let’s get real here…how about this?
To Philly : Kaberle + Kulemin + Gustaffson
To TOR: Briere + Hartnell + Leighton

Burke – (Chuckle) – Doesn’t Briere have like another decade on his cotract at $6 M + a year??
Tell you what, You want to ditch a bit of salary to take on Turco, assume hypothetically? You also have a lot of money tied up in Pronger, Timmonen, Briere, Richards, Carter ,Hartnell and now Hamhuis. Plus, you guys have always liked Kaberle. I have some good offers out west, but the way he hates the travel, he’ll likely make any Western teams pay extra to extend….So i like the idea of dealing with you guys. How about this:
To Philly: Kaberle + Giggy + Dale Mitchell + Hanson.
To TOR: Carter+ Hartnell +Leighton’s rights and that minor-leaguer Pat Maroon.

Holmgren – “Uh, I got a beep. Let me get back to you on that. You still going to the Draft Brian??

Burke – “Ha Ha smart-ass! I’ll see you are Clarke’s for that BBQ on Father’s Day.”

    Flyers needed to dump salary….

But all will say it was a bad trade.

    @ Charlie:
The assumption making the rounds is, if Hamhuis were to be acquired (only an ‘if’), it would likely signal the end of Beauchemin’s tenure. Burke is loyal, yes, but he will move anybody if he feels it can benefit the club. But, that’s only one assumption … they could indeed hang onto him and run Gunnarsson and Schenn in the 5-6 pairing for the season instead.
    .
On that note, there is nothing wrong with Gunnarsson being a 5-6 if necessary. He’s entering only his second year, and he could slump as second-year players often do. 3rd-pairing time won’t hurt his progression one bit (he’d still be facing NHL competition). Besides, injuries happen … he’ll see his fair share of ice either way.

    @ Garrett Bauman:

Exactly. I would like to think that Burke is exploring all options. He obviously has been mulling solid offers as far back as the beginning of this month when he admitted as much on Hockeycentral @ Noon on Rogers Sportsnet during the first week of June.
    .
You know one of those offers were not from Philly as they are in the middle of the Cup Finals. I know Burke was given that Kaberle offer for Kessel just hours before the draft last June but probably would have preferred to use that offer to drive the price up with other teams. Probem was last June, not a heck of a lot of teams were coming up to bat with solid offers for Kaberle.
    .
As for this past trade deadline, Kabs agent giving Burke 3 teams he would agree to be dealt to ON THE DAY OF THE TRADE DEADLINE was not enough time for Burke to maximize his value.
    .
That is why Burke is keenly waiting to explore all options right up until the trade deadline. Hell, who knows. It could in fact be a team in the Western conference that Kabs agrees to sign with, shocking everyone on this board.
    .
It just seems if Burke wants to get this team moving forward quickly, he can’t stand pat on trading Kabs. Kabs being dealt is the key to making this team get better.
    .
That is the vision Fletcher had two trade deadlines ago before the Muskoka 5 gave him the one-finger salute. Burke tried to make this team better by trading trade picks. Other than trading Kadri and Schenn, Burke has NO other assets to trade to bring in significant help other than dealing Kaberle.
    .
Dealing a vet with value is the only way to bring in young help that possess top-tier talent.

I don’t think that’s the problem. I’ve tried to change my picture too and I keep getting an error message and the picture I tried to use is only 15K. And when I try to delete my picture, it says it worked but my picture stays. I figure there must but a site issue somewhere.
