’09-10 Player Reviews: John Mitchell
Share

We’ve partnered up with Pension Plan Puppets to bring to you a Player Review series, where we will be evaluating and grading the 2009-10 season for every Leaf who featured in a significant number of games for the Blue and White last season, with an eye towards 2010-11.Today we feature John Mitchell, profiled by Garrett Bauman.

The Summary:

It’s difficult to know what to make of John Mitchell. During his Leafs‘ tenure he has flashed obvious talent, but also a tendency to disappear for lengthy stretches.  After a promising rookie campaign, Mitchell found himself struggling to earn ice time, playing in defensive role in front of shaky goaltending, and was later beset by a knee injury which caused him to miss 20 games.

A restricted free agent, it goes without saying that Mitchell will have a lot to prove should the team decide to bring him back.

Year Team GP G A Pts +/- PIM S S%
08-09 Leafs 76 12 17 29 -16 33 98 12.2
09-10 Leafs 60 6 17 23 -7 31 90 6.7

The Good:

Mitchell’s main asset, and the key to his success, is his strong work ethic.  Heart and effort have never been a question with him, nor has versatility, for that matter as he has shown the ability to play as effectively on the wing as he does at centre. He also demonstrated some underrated stick skills with a couple of nifty shootout goals, and his playmaking improved considerably (was on pace for 23 assists, up from 17 the year before).

A good faceoff man (51.2% for the season, 63.4% on the PP), Mitchell possesses decent instincts in both the offensive and defensive zones.  Some will point to his -7 rating (among the worst on the team) to counter that last claim, but that number can be largely attributed to his playing a more defensive role early on with the league’s 2nd-worst goaltending behind him; by season’s end his CORSI and GVT both ranked 5th among remaining Leafs’ forwards.  A chirpy, though not overly physical player, Mitchell’s most underrated attribute may be his ability to throw opponents off their game with a steady stream of chatter throughout.

The Bad:

Playing the second half of the season wearing a full knee brace, Mitchell struggled to regain his form upon his return from injury. His shooting percentage took a turn for the worse last season, plummeting from 12.2 to 6.7, with his goals dropping by a similar margin.  Considered a decent skater for his size, Mitchell does, however, lack a top gear and must learn to rely more on his instincts to generate offense rather than pressing and forcing low-percentage plays. A commitment to better picking his spots in order to avoid getting caught deep in the zone on broken plays would improve his overall game immensely.

The Ugly:

For all his individual skills, Mitchell has yet to figure out how to put them all together into a singular package.  On a Brian Burke team, where the top-six and bottom-six roles are clearly defined, where does a player like Mitchell fit in?  His advantage – the ability to plug into any line for short bursts – is also his disadvantage, as there is a very real possibility he could find himself typecast as a utility player/13th forward viewed as lacking the ability to produce in a given role over the long haul.

Audience Participation:

Now it’s your turn. In the comments, rate Mitchell on a scale of 1-10 (10 being the best) based on his performance relative to his potential, and your expectations for the season.

Discussion:

Do you expect Mitchell to return, and if so, what role suits him best? Also, to what degree did the knee injury affect his second half performance? Do you expect to see a different John Mitchell next season when he is back to 100%, or is what we’ve seen so far as good as it’s going to get?

Okay, I thought I was done for the night, but when I saw McKenzie updating the Horton situation, this three-way came to mind. And since I know how realistic you all think three-way trades are, I thought I would post it:
    -
    To Florida:
    -
    Tomas Kaberle
    Kris Versteeg
    -
    To Chicago:
    -
    John MItchell
    2nd in 2011 (tor)
    -
    To Toronto:
    -
    Nathan Horton
    Brent Sopel
2nd in 2010 (tbl, via fla)
    -
The Panthers replace Horton with one of Tallon’s men (maybe the expand the trade a bit to include the rights to Ladd as well), and also get one of the game’s best puck-moving defensemen. I know they’re looking to get younger, but this trade makes them a better team, and gives them a sick defense of Kaberle, McCabe, Ballard, Allen, Kulikov and Fowler. Chicago gets what they asked for in a Versteeg trade, plus a little extra, and Toronto obviously gets the young power-forward in Horton.
    -
Looking over the stats, one thing intrigues me about Horton – he was a plus 38 in his first 3 seasons.

i don’t know man, i just find it hard to believe a three team trade would go done unless its minor guys involved in the deal… just my opinion though

The reason I like this one, is that Tallon and Bowman are obviously quite tight, and Tallon is clearly going to want to reclaim some of his team. Burke would probably like Horton, and has the ability to take extra cap space.

That one makes a fair bit of sense. It involves fairly small pieces, and no untouchables.

It actually makes even more sense with Boston, since they are the ones rumored pushing for Horton, and we know they’ve long wanted Kaberle. Florida gets Wideman, and Boston’s 1st (15th oveall), Boston gets Kaberle, and Toronto’s 2nd in 2011, and Toronto gets Horton, and their own 2nd in 2010. Every time you think Chiarelli is going to add to his offense, he signs another defensemen. A Kaberle/Chara combination may be too much to resist.

Well the trade is fair no doubt in my mind, hmm what do you think about Bruins, Hawks and Leafs in a three way trade? I’m just not sold on Nathan Horton, I’d prefer Sharp. Make it happen Cameron!

I really don’t see Sharp coming here. It’s not that I’m not an optimist, I think Bobby Ryan, Dustin Byfuglien, James Neal, and even Jeff Carter are all attainable, but would all be easier to obtain than Sharp right now. He’s a key cog in Chicago – more important than people give him credit for. At the same time, I don’t think he would be as effecitve on a different team, so it’s just a bad situation. It would cost too much to obtain him, and he would disappoint in Toronto IMO.

Does it have to be a direct 3-way trade, or what if he just trades Kaberle for ‘X’, and then trades ‘X’ + for Ryan/Horton/Neal/Carter/etc….?

I believe that would constitute two SEPERATE trades thus resulting in a NON three way trade lol

Cameron, this looks like a three-way in the making to me. Go ahead and work your magic.

Though I agree in principle as I have complimented his creativity in the past, in reality (ha, that’s funny) it can’t! He was traded at 12:23am last night in a 3-way (ironically)! Look up 13 posts ago. You can’t just conveniently ignore a post when it doesn’t suit you. Well, you can, but where’s the fun in that? -
It seems we have too many players for the team. SO I will pencil myself in on the 5th line that gets thrown together in the playoffs when all your weak-ass lines don’t cut it when the going gets rough and the game, the series is on the line. Think Clutch. Yah, the Clutch Line… that’s the shit. I’m the centre of THAT line. Just step back bitches and wake me when it counts… mwahahaaa!

I’d probably prefer to do the deal straight up with Chicago with Sharp and Sopel coming our way for just the 2nd?
