Swinging for the Fences

Just had a brief word with Leafs head of amateur scouting Dave Morrison, who spoke about the approach to this weekend’s draft without a first or second round pick in hand (as of now):

We have done our list the same as we would in any other year fully prepared for anything that may happen. However we have certainly spent more time looking at a group of players that we think could be there when we pick at 62. Every year we try to unearth a gem and it will be no different at this draft.

Given that the scouting staff has focused more efforts than usual in looking at players within the 62nd pick range, you would think this gives them a slight edge in finding that “gem” should he be out there.

The question then became for me: is there a decision that must be made when picking at 62 between going with a high-risk, high-reward prospect or looking more for a player the scouting staff feels could develop into being “serviceable” within a certain role? The rumblings within scouting circles that Justin Shugg is of high interest to Leafs scouts and management fits more into the latter approach. Morrison had this to say:

Good question. We spend a lot of time on that. There is always a risk reward equation we go through with the players. We factor that in when we make our list. We will take the best NHL prospect on our list at 62. Sometimes you need to swing at the fence to hit a homerun.

Yeah, the contract is still part of the 50 max.

Shitty BUZZ that would suck if we are still paying the coin on the loan, Thats why I will stick with if we are going to take on a larger salary to get other players in a deal its got be for a guy that can play. Campbell anyone!

    @ Cameron:

I’ll take reckless emotion any day. If Torres gets 12-15 goals and 15-20 assists and plays with an edge and emotion I’ll take that over 60 points from Poni.

Nothing is forever and Poni’s time is up. All the best to him.

Also, anyone else think that Sopel would be what Burke would pick up as a salary dump especially now that he has shown to be a Burke player on the ice and now off the ice as well. He is a great citizen and is taking his family and the Cup to the Chicago Pride Parade. I just think Burke will see that and be impressed considering everything that has happened. Plus he is an excellent 6 guy if we needed it if we traded Beauchemin and Kaberle.

Im just going to throw this out there, you guys can spit in my mouth if you want to but I would love to see Zenon Konopka come in and be our 3rd/4th line center. He is amazing in the face off circle had decent numbers in the A (comparable to Mitchell…but more points in less games) and loves chuckin nucs…. How amazing would a Konopka-Orr Tag-team be? and with his 60+ faceoff percentage, sounds like a good pker….if hes not the one in the box

really? I would be all for it…I mean its not a signing that leads to the playoffs, he’s obviously just a role player, but a pest/fighter with a great faceoff percentage is rare and it would really round out the bottom 6 for us,

Zenon Konopka is a killer name for a Canadian player. He and Orr in the box for 500 mins a season isn’t good for a team that struggles killing penalties though.

Trivia question I just saw….the Oilers have never had a first overall pick but have had 2 former first overall picks play for them. Name them.

Anybody in Toronto feel the ground or the building you’re in, shake about 10 minutes ago? and on a lesser note did the site slowdown 30 min. ago for anyone?
