BlackHawks – Thrashers Blockbuster

According to ESPN’s Pierre LeBrun, the Chicago Blackhawks have traded forwards Dustin Byfgulien and Ben Eager along with defenseman Brent Sopel and prospect Akim Aliu to the Atlanta Thrashers in exchange for New Jersey’s 1st and 2nd round picks, top prospect Jeremy Morin, and forward Marty Reasoner.

Holy Blockbuster! Chicago has been demanding sky high prices all offseason and it looks like someone finally bit… Morin scored 47 goals in 58 OHL games for the Kitchener Rangers this past season. A steep, steep price. With this move, the Hawks have cleared $4.33 million in cap space (not including Eager who is an RFA).

    @ IBleaf:
yeah, Byfuglian is the reason the Hawks went to back to back SCF…not Kane, Toews, Keith Seabrook etc etc etc
look, the guy was nails in the post season, there is no getting around that, but go look at his regular season stats, they are horendous, go ask a hawks fan, he is lazy and unmotivated and infuriating in the regular season.
If the Leafs were set to contend next year I would have loved to add him, but as it stands now , with the leafs set to struggle to even be a bubble team, I want no part of some guy who earns 3 mill to not play until April

If we can’t sign either Kovalchuk or Marleau, well our “Draft day” is pretty gay, it will basically be like us drafting 3rd to 5th rounders LOL, HOWEVER I’m surprised Philly has not signed Hamhuis yet, perhaps they have a deal waiting to be completed at the draft to clear up some room?

My question is, why did ANYONE believe that Sharp would be available if this trade would relieve the Hawks of their cap woes (plus maybe a versteeg trade).
    .
Goes to show how starry eyed some leafs fans are…who is next, Ryan or Staal?!?!

I think it was a pretty fair trade. You don’t get players like Buff and eager for nothing, if you want them you have to outbid anybody else who wants them. If you are trading picks or unproven prospects for NHL players, especially ones that helped win a stanley cup, you will have to pay the price. It may look steep but in a few years if Morin doesn’t pan out and chicago’s draft selections don’t work out, Atlanta wins hands down.

Yeah, not sure why so many people are pissed off that we missed out on an overpaid 3rd liner who has a career high of 36 points and a reputation of being lazy. Not sure I get it….

Holy F*ck, the saying “the rich get richer” goes hand in hand with this trade. Chicago stole this one by a long shot and no sharp for us :(

Hold up on trade call appears to be tied to waiting for league personnel to land in Los Angeles.

The Bobby Ryan rumors have really been quiet after Ryan’s comments… That being said I don’t think its out of the realm! With the hawks getting the deal they got for Buff the asking price for Ryan would probably be even higher though. I think fair value would be Nazem Kadri + Thomas Kaberle. Would anyone here do that deal? Ryan – Bozak – Kessel would be lights out… There are very few players in the league Burke would trade Kadri or Schenn for but one of them might be Ryan… JUST TRYING TO GET SOME EXCITEMENT OVER HERE

    @ Doorman:
I’m a first line Right Winger! (My beer league hockey team just beat the undefeated first place team last night…..i’m still recovering)
    .
It’s hard to get a read on this and im sure Burke is shuffling in his seat because he can’t cover up trading away picks with shrewd signings like Rynnas or Scrivens…We have only one chip to trade, and that is Kaberle. I still dont get what he means by July 1st is our draft day, because the talent pool is low and cap space is precious.
    .
I get the sense that we (mlhs) are hoping for a trade more to talk about something new as opposed to getting a good deal. What else can explain not getting Byfuglien. Don’t get me wrong, i actually would have enjoyed Horton here, but what have we to give up?
    .
Doorman: Staal isn’t as unattainable as Dreger says. Pitts needs depth at Forward plus a possible replacement for Gonchar. Waiting until friday is killing me slowly inside

    @ Bob is your uncle:
I didnt think they would get that much, but I knew it would be close. Wayyyyy more then the idiot “Mitchell+rights to Hanson” ideas that were being thrown around. There are 29 other teams out there and anything can bemade a bidding war. All it takes is 2 GMs who want the same thing

Guys let’s calm down. Chicago did not win the cup because of Eager and Big Buf, although, they made useful contributions. Chi won because of Keith, Sharp, Versteeg, Toews and Caine of the taxi fame.

It is not like they have let go of any of their core players and we have missed out nabbing the prey. There is nothing to get ourselves into in a bind.

Let’s wait for Big Butt BB and see what can he deliver. I hope it is a boy.
