Chicago Trade Means No Sharp

Well, scratch another player from the Toronto Maple Leafs‘ list of potential top-six forwards.

Patrick Sharp is no longer an option for trade with the departures of Dustin Byfuglien, Ben Eager and Brent Sopel from the Chicago Blackhawks.

The Hawks now have the cap space necessary (with the anticipated demotion of  goaltender Cristobal Huet) to tend offer sheets to their restricted free agents, which means there’s no reason to trade Sharp.

If the unofficial report which suggested Burke had targeted Nathan Horton and Sharp is true, then the Leafs GM may be on the verge of something drastic if he is serious about improving the team’s lackluster offence.

As the Entry Draft approaches, it appears Burke’s options to improve upfront, which were limited to begin with, continue to diminish. On the flip side, those who are in favor of unloading Tomas Kaberle will almost surely get their wish. Kaberle remains Burke’s lone bargaining chip (unless he is willing to move Schenn) in his attempt to acquire a top-six forward. Unless Burke has a trick or two up his sleeve, I’d bet he’s changed his stance on potentially retaining the Czech defender.

If Burke doesn’t plan on making a splash in the UFA waters, then one would assume he’s cooking up something big for the draft in Los Angeles this weekend.

Your thoughts?

You stay classy, MLHS.

Something is seriously up, BB is really quiet, and it seems a storm is looming upon us. Its just too quiet from the Leafs camp!

Ya read in both the Star and the Sun that Burke received 4 solid offers for Kabs. Altho his hands are tied till tomorrow.
Apparently the Ducks are now in on Kabs as well.
I can see NJ, TB, Ducks, Sabers and Bruins going hard after him. They all need a solid puck moving D man. There is probably more teams but i think they are the ones in most need.

    @ Nabeel:

    Yes it is too quiet.

I hope that Burke/Nonis swings a deal with Boston Kaberle + Caputi + low pick for Bergeron or Krejci and the rights to Wheeler. (Bergeron is a UFA next season as is Kaberle)

While Nonis makes that transaction, BB talks to his old mentor Lou and send Grabs to Devils for the rights to Kovalchuk.

With 59.4 million in cap no problems in signing Kovi to 6 years at 8 million. Their is still plenty of cap to fill out the roster

Teams I see really interested in Kaberle:

New Jersey – little to offer unless it is Zajac (!) or Clarkson. NJ did pick up Arnott!

Pittsburgh – Staal; He wouldn’t hit us with big one for Malkin, would he? Doubt it, but?

    Anaheim – always the Bobby Ryan rumours;

Columbus – There was a rumor of Voracek and the 4th overall pick. Wouldn’t mind that! Then draft Fowler to replace Kaberle!

Like you said probably more teams on the radar!

Not sure if anyone has seen this article, but Burke was about about trading Schenn and he said no.

Burke said yesterday that is tempted to gamble and make a move to get into the first round of the draft…

He said that he has turned down an offer for a later 1st rounder for a current roster player……and that he has recieved double digit inquires over Kabs with 4 concret offers…

Just a thought, but is BB making us wait in order to give us a surprise like Captain Dion’s arrival or is this gonna be another lunchbag letdown?
The waiting is killing me. !!!
On the trade front, I would definately take Stall from pitts, and even Ryan from the ducks if burkie can swing that one, but columbus giving us a pick and another defenceman wont be helping us in the forward area.
    Cant wait for tomorrow…

Wasn’t always keen on bringing in Kovalchuck but I am all over it now.
If we can get him signed and get a decent return for Kabs I’ll be happy……You guys did a good job selling me on Kovalchuck. It took a couple of months but I am all in.

Kovy may be our only option for quick improvement……him coming here makes a whole lot of sense….although Burke has been adamant that he will not sign a player of any level for a long term big money contract….

    Hope he changes his mind

I agree kovi may be our only option left, but if burkie wants to win now, he might have to bend the rule in order to get him to sign on the dotted line…

I would take Kovulchuck as well, but you guys also seem to miss the point that 1 player doesn’t make a team, and when the time comes that our team needs an infusion of new players we would have no cap to spend. A player is only as good as his contract in a CAP NHL, so signing Kovulchuk at all cost is stupid move. He needs a decent contract salary and length in TO or its not happening.

I am not convienced Kovi will be signing a ridiculous contract….he passed on 10 year 100M+ contract….

    I am thinking short term…4 years…at 8M or a long term…life time type deal with a 5M cap hit….Hossa type deal

If Kovi does sign a deal like that and then in 5 years bolts for the KHL, is the remainder of the contract on the books. Could we do a 10 year deal, 5 mill cap hit but payout the first 40 million in 5 years and then he books ‘er.
