Discussion: Schenn or Kadri?

As we head into the draft weekend, Burke‘s shown the fans and media that a) he’s not afraid to swing a huge deal and b) no one’s going to see it coming. You can bet he’s going to be be mulling over and considering all sorts of huge blockbuster type scenarios over the next few days, and there could be the teeniest, tiniest, slightest, smaller than Wallin’s point totals chance that he’ll have an interesting decision to make: whether to trade Schenn or Kadri. Yes, I know the popular opinion is to never trade either of them and I’m fully on board with that, but this is purely hypothetical. Imagine Sidney Crosby or whatever player of your choice is coming back the other way.

Now… the other team has given you the choice of giving up either defenseman Luke Schenn, the former 5th overall pick and future defensive anchor on the blueline, or Nazem Kadri, the former 7th overall pick and talented potential 1st line center. Which one would you be more inclined to trade away, and which one would you be more inclined to keep?

No copping out!

if we could get kadri centering a line between kessel and say, patty marleau i think this kid could be an all-star, within a couple of years….

    @ Jordan:
I think most of us would love Savard but his contract is not good – AT ALL!…. and he got rocked last year for a major concussion.. how do we know that he will ever be 100% again, he could start a slow decline as early as this upcoming season. Those are the issues. Plus Burke is looking for a scoring winger and secondary toughness.

I really don’t see why a deal with Dallas, Pitt, ana or Buff won’t get done…

and if Chia-pet really wants Kaberle this bad he needs to pony up.. they are thin on D now and are very close to the cap

I’m wondering if this is a trial balloon article to see how dedicate Leafs fans would react. Trade neither or I’m going to find RW and tattoo a picture of Gary Bettman on his ass.

You honestly think hes gonna play hockey for minimun salary in the 6th and 7th year? Or even 1.5mil in the 5th? Fuck no. He wanted a 4-5 year deal so they made it a 7 for the cap hit. If you dont understand why this is one of the best contracts in hockey your an idiot lol jk, but seriously, hes will be good for 3-4 more years. Then even if he still plays Im sure hes a 2nd line center for 4 mil. Thats decent money. Montreal is paying Plekanec 5 mil now so I think 4 mil for twice the player is better
your also forgetting that Savard is only 32 right now and will only be 33 all year.

Just look at Florida, and what Dale Tallon has done already in his first month on the job. Got rid of guys who dont fit, acquired another well positioned first rounder who will compliment Kulikov and Booth. After Friday they will likely have Cam Fowler and Nick Bjustad. Burke has done masterfully faking his own draft but those options have been played out and we still arent there yet.

Damn i really thought N. Horton would have looked good here, but what seems to be our only stumbling block of getting players like him is that we have nothing to offer. That is why P. Sharp won’t be coming to Toronto, unless Kaberle is involved.

    @ Jordan:
Back to what I said earlier… I’m not bashing Savard the player, I’m bashing the idea of trading the best asset we have for a guy who at best is a second line centre on a good team… a 32 Year old defenseman in the top 5 at his position with minimal injuries and wear and tear for a 33 year old forward in the top 20 at his position and maximum wear and tear is not a good deal… no matter how you put it…
You think Boston would have gone out and got Horton if they thought Savard was the answer to lead them to the Cup? One year after signing him to a 7 year deal? I didn’t make up those numbers, that’s what his contract is… He’ll be close to 40 if he’s still playing and not in a chair somewhere eating through a straw…
The point is to build towards a Stanley Cup not to be better for 2 years… Kaberle deal isn’t going to be the only solution but it should provide you with a solid piece for the next 5 to 10 not 2 to 3…

    @ Burkie_s Bollocks:
Totally agree that Getting something equal to Savard but younger would be better. But you really think we will? I have lost all faith in getting a good young player for Kaberle becaue its been 2 years now and nobody offered what we want for him. Since the Carter+1st was offered, everyone think we will get that again. Not goona happen IMO. We wont get Neal, Ryan, Carter, Staal, or whoever. Its just stupid to trade that for Kaberle when he can walk in 12 months time
So I sit and think, welll…….Boston would obviously want him, and they are rumoured to be shopping Savard. So if thats the best deal we can get then doit up. After months of thinking, I have decided theres no way in HELL I want Kaberle back. too much $$$$ on the back end

    @ LeafsRyan.:
I’d trade Luke Wayyyyyyyyy before Kads, and its not bc Luke wont be the better player, its bc Kadri’s ceiling is ridiculous. I hate how many times we’ve traded away offense, especially when it goes out into the NHL and scores 40+ goals. This kid will be a star, he has too many tools, and too much confidence not to be, this is the ONLY reason i say Schenn would go first. That being said, i wouldn’t trade Kadri or Schenn not to mention Kadri and Schenn for Crosby…that may make me retarded, but who wants to win “because we have Crosby” lollll, i dno it just wouldnt be the same as home growin it and addin a few others.

    @ Jordan:
I agree that it’s going to be very hard to get a player like the ones you mentioned.
The only working for the Leafs is they have money and time.
A lot of teams, i.e: Boston, Pittsburgh, Dallas, Anaheim need to win now and a couple of those teams have cap problems, a surplus in some areas and need of a proper puck carrying defenseman and power play quarterback…
Boston needs to win immediately to forget about last year and because some of their key pieces are getting old and more expensive… you only have a few more years of Chara at his best, Rask is gonna start costing serious money after this year
Dallas needs to win immediately and have cap issues with the new ownership and self-imposed cap as well as a surplus of wingers and a bad need for a D…
Pittsburgh can’t continue to hope that 3 centres and a goalie is all they’ll need to win the cup… this playoffs proved that…

The leafs need to make the playoffs but if they are the 8th seed and get knocked out first round that’s still a success for this team… we have 3 to 5 years to turn into a serious Stanley Cup contender…

the hope is that you combine timing, money and pressures on other teams to win now and you can turn Kaberle into a big piece of the future…

that’s how we turned Stajan, Hagman and stuff into Phaneuf and Aulie… a deal which if you had proposed it on this forum you would have got laughed at and asked to never come back…
