’09-10 Player Reviews: Viktor Stalberg

Next up, Viktor Stalberg by PPP:

The Summary: Viktor Stalberg made a big splash in the pre-season as he led the NHL with 6 goals in 8 games. Then came game number three of the season and the player known as the A-Train. After Anton Volchenkov‘s hit Stalberg began a steep decline that led him to the AHL for 39 games. He returned in December but his impact was minimal until he found a bit of chemistry with his fellow Frat PackersTyler Bozak and Christian Hanson. It was enough to make some wonder if there was any hope to marry his exceptional speed with a more physical game.

As with many of the  young players, he was unable to match his potential with results. This coming season will obviously be important as he tries to show that his problems with consistency lay with the transition to a more rigorous schedule and a tougher league rather than being found out as mediocre. Whether he sticks or not we can at least look forward to a year’s worth of special messages.

The Discussion:

Where does Viktor Stalberg’s future lie? Has he shown you enough to think that he is a possible fit in the Leafs‘ top six or will his speed be the skill that keeps him in the NHL as a checking forward?

I have a Quad core with 4 gig of Ram and 500 gig hard drive you guys can borrow if you need one for draft day?? I’d give it to you but I just donated one to the elderly at my wifes work.
Edit: As a backup of course I’m sure you guys have some good equipment of your own.

I think one of two things happens; LA doesnt deal with Burke and include Schenn. In that case Burke goes after Kovalchuk and wins the race. He then trades Kaberle for picks and prospects and loads up via the draft. If LA does deal then we’ve just added another quality young piece.

    @ peterbleafs:
I will lose alot of faith in Burke if Kovalchuk signs for a decent cap hit somewhere, and he says he didnt offer anything

If we do a deal with LA it will be for Handzus and B Schenn for Kaberle plus something else from us, likely a decent ECL contract. Putting two and two together, Burke may have an agreement with LA that he will not pursue Kovalchuk if they do a deal that gets him Brayden Schenn. Otherwise a deal for Kaberle doesnt seem to fit, they have Doughty and Johnson already.

Johnson is rfa next year and is way over rated.

Kovalchuk is $8million a year cap hit no matter where he signs. But Burke can offer more than cap salary to Kovalchuk than LA can.

Offers remain for Kaberle and it’s expected they’ll improve tonight, but Leafs source says there is no deal imminent at this stage.

Eklund It should be noted there are more than two deals I am following involving Toronto. Kaberle likely not the first deal to happen

Had an interesting conversation with a friend of mine this morning. He’s a big time Oiler fan, and I posted yesterday that I would like Hemsky. Now, when Hemsky came up in our conversation, he said he thinks EDM should trade him for a top 5 pick this year, go with youth and probably get another top 5 pick in next years draft(sound familiar?). His biggest concern is EDM blueline. He believes when Souray is traded, they will be extremely weak back there. I offered this suggestion(on condition we could sign Kovi) and he is still chewing on it, lol..

    Kaberle, Finger, Mitchell and Hanson
    to EDM for
    Hemsky and Horcoff
I think he really liked the idea of getting rid of Horcoff and his big salary. We trade a contract we don’t like(Finger) for an even worse contract in Horcoff in order to get Hemsky, EDM aquires 2 D-men that can play right away, and 2 young players with some grit for their bottom 6. Just got off the phone with him and he still says he’s on the fence with that one. It just kind of surprized me since he is such an Oiler die hard and didn’t laugh in my face. Makes me wonder how other EDM fans feel about Hemsky and Horcoff.

Stalberg had some pretty good numbers for the minutes he averaged per game, all things considered, I give him a 7.5/10. It will be tough for him to keep that average up next season, hopefully he won’t slip into C territory, anything below a 7.

i give stalberg a solid 8/10. based on expectations? sure. but…..if he played the same next year as he just played, he’ll be getting a 5/10. why? last year was his development year, and this year he needs to show more consistency and comfort in his game and further improvement. or he may just end up like……

john mitchell. this is mitchell’s last shot if you ask me.

stalberg may just be the best late bloomer, late round draft pick gift from Ferguson…..or he may never make it. by the end of next season, we’ll have a MUCH better idea what we really got in this kid.

and even better, look at bozak’s same…..rookie…..”development” year….right outta college. came from the same place as stalberg, but man, if he improves from last year, look out. this kid has great hockey sense (which you can’t teach) and really only needs some size and another scoring winger and he could put up 75+ points easy. but alas, marleau is gone!

stalberg – 8/10. He spent a lot of his little NHL time trying to cover for line-mates. Trying to switch from forecheck to lead guy on the break-out, and never looked out of place defensively. Best player by a mile in camp last year. Took a long time to get back on track after an early injury and assignment to Marlies. If his conditioning is pro-level, he’ll star.

Stalberg has all the tools to be an NHL star – this year we find out if he has the heart.
    For the ’09-10 season, I give him a 6.5 / 7.0
His NHL start was rough, what with that early season hit (hopefully a big lesson learned there) and it took him time to rebound. I’m really hoping for big things from this JFJ pick…
