Patience is the Word

It may seem uncharacteristic of  Brian Burke, historically a headline maker at the Entry Draft, to sit essentially idle on the hockey world’s biggest stage. Important to remember is that the big man can be patient when he needs to be. The Anaheim and Calgary deals of last February, when Burke waited until certain pressure points reached a head, were both examples of Burke’s willingness to sit back until the time was right to pull the trigger – despite all the temptations to hit the panic button as his team sat in the Eastern Conference basement with no first round pick to look forward to.

There is no doubt Burke has been driving a hard bargain for Kaberle. This has to have many general managers looking to some prospective names in the UFA market for alternatives that don’t cost assets up front. Sergei Gonchar, Pavel Kubina, Paul Martin, Derek Morris, Toni Lydman, Joe Corvo, Adrian Aucoin, Shaonne Morrisonn, Dan Hamhuis (who looks like he won’t be coming to terms with the Flyers) and Carlo Colaiacovo are all pending UFAs that could be considered less pricey substitutes. Come mid-July, with many of these names off the board,  Burke might just cash in on another GMs desperation.

A few other notes:

  • It is know Brian Burke’s preferable return for Tomas Kaberle is a young, NHL-ready top six forward with size. Burke is also said to be interested in acquiring some secondary toughness and scoring up front in the form of a checking liner with offensive upside. There are hopes that Caputi will develop into that niche, however it is believed the organization doesn’t think he’s ready yet to fill that need which Burke wants to address for this season. Ryan Malone is one name that appeals to Burke here, although there certainly has to be trepidations about the accompanying contract which pays the 6’4 winger $4.5 million until 2014-15. Andrew Ladd fits the description as well, and was a rumoured target according to the Globe and Mail’s Eric Duhatschek.
  • Marc Savard is said to be willing to waive his no-trade clause to go to Toronto, Ottawa or Detroit at this point. According to sources the Leafs have only mild interest in Savard and would only consider him as a part of a package involving long-time assets of interest Joe Colborne or Blake Wheeler. The Leafs for their part would then have to add more beyond Kaberle to get that in motion. It seems likely to me that with the three teams Savard has named as desirable destinations (Detroit, Ottawa, Toronto) not having strong interest in the centre, Peter Chiarelli will wait until July 1 when his no-movement clause becomes limited according to Nick Kypreos.

We will be doing a cover-it-live tonight starting around 6:45 p.m. ET.

OT, but I cannot for the life of me understand the Grabovski hate. In a thin market for top-6 forwards we DESPERATELY need, people want to give our 2nd most talented one away for a pick that’s years away from playing in the NHL, if ever at all?

Guy had great #s as a rookie, improved considerably in key areas last year, and comes at a modest cap hit for his ceiling and skillset.

Package Grabo if it’ll get you Jordan Staal, sure. But dealing him solely for a pick is ludicrous. Kadri will convert to the wing before they’ll GIVE Grabovski away.

Really what you guys forget is that BB picked up a few free agents for us Bozak , The Monster, Hanson, etc to take care of the picks we lost in the trade to Boston. Give it a rest boys, he said if there was a deal that made sence to trade Kabby. then he would do it, he is not trading Kabby just to keep you dummies happy but to try and make this team better now if it can be done. I vote to do what ever that will be if keeping him makes us better then keep him if there is a deal that make good sence and makes us better then Im all for that too. GO LEAFS GO@ GordonBombay:

I got a idea why dont we trade away all our players for draft pics that may or maynot be able to play in the near future, Just so that you dummies can say we made some moves , Im sitting here laughing at you because you dont know much about the game or how to build a winner, It seem like all your interested in is moving players around. Lets see how many leafs were leafs 3 years ago that are playing on the team now. besides pics, that were not playing but belonged to the leafs only one , I think that should tell you somthing. we are trying to get better but it takes time. some of the trades you boys wanted didnt make sence at all. Me I cant wait till the season starts….

Yes, it was tough to sit through the 1st round and nothing happens with your Team. Burke said July 1st is our Draft day so we shouldn’t be surprised with the non-event of last night. There are a series of dominos we all need to be aware of:
    1) The first domino to fall on or shortly after July 1st is Kovalchuk. When he signs with the Kings Lomabardi will need to make adjustments to his roster.
    2) Kaberle for Brown is one possibility to upgrade the King’s defense while we get a Burke kind of Winger.
    3) Burke signs Paul Martin.
    4) Leafs trade Beauchemin to Tampa Bay for Malone (a Burke kind of Winger).
    5) A move involving Chicago for Versteeg or Ladd could happen as the Leafs can take Huet and move him to Mannheim in the German League plus they have Jimmy Hayes. Since the Hawks obtained Jimmy’s little brother we now have an attraction to the Hawks. Ladd, Huet, prospect or a 2nd pick in 2011 for Hayes and Reimer.

We are already a much better team than the one which lost the playoffs right from the getgo last October.

And Bosak was acquired for no players at all and is equiv imo to a top 5 in the current draft–and the combo of Aulie,Stalberg and Hanson is at least equiv to a 2nd in the current draft

So from my pov we got Kessel for a 2011 1st only—and that 1st might well be a lot less valuable than some think

We also got Gus for no players

We may have to move Kabs soon for whatever we can get, even if on the low side.

I would imagine that BB is trying to package Grabs

All things considered, BB/Nonis are doing a great job

Burke has been with the leafs less than 2 years. You all want to crucify him! I think he said the word “REBUILD” when he accepted the job. He sets his goals high for the team, like making the playoffs this past season.

There is no 1st round pick that will put up the numbers that KESSEL will put up next year. So we are only really losing a 2nd round pick. We will get a “Nice Reward” for Kabs! Teams are built on Defense, many teams need a power play defenseman.

The leafs will be better regardless of a lack of first rounder pick. Burke always does something in the free-agency market. PICK WHAT YOU CAN IN THE DRAFT, THEN SHOP IN FREE AGENCY!

    GO LEAFS GO!!
