Patience is the Word

It may seem uncharacteristic of  Brian Burke, historically a headline maker at the Entry Draft, to sit essentially idle on the hockey world’s biggest stage. Important to remember is that the big man can be patient when he needs to be. The Anaheim and Calgary deals of last February, when Burke waited until certain pressure points reached a head, were both examples of Burke’s willingness to sit back until the time was right to pull the trigger – despite all the temptations to hit the panic button as his team sat in the Eastern Conference basement with no first round pick to look forward to.

There is no doubt Burke has been driving a hard bargain for Kaberle. This has to have many general managers looking to some prospective names in the UFA market for alternatives that don’t cost assets up front. Sergei Gonchar, Pavel Kubina, Paul Martin, Derek Morris, Toni Lydman, Joe Corvo, Adrian Aucoin, Shaonne Morrisonn, Dan Hamhuis (who looks like he won’t be coming to terms with the Flyers) and Carlo Colaiacovo are all pending UFAs that could be considered less pricey substitutes. Come mid-July, with many of these names off the board,  Burke might just cash in on another GMs desperation.

A few other notes:

  • It is know Brian Burke’s preferable return for Tomas Kaberle is a young, NHL-ready top six forward with size. Burke is also said to be interested in acquiring some secondary toughness and scoring up front in the form of a checking liner with offensive upside. There are hopes that Caputi will develop into that niche, however it is believed the organization doesn’t think he’s ready yet to fill that need which Burke wants to address for this season. Ryan Malone is one name that appeals to Burke here, although there certainly has to be trepidations about the accompanying contract which pays the 6’4 winger $4.5 million until 2014-15. Andrew Ladd fits the description as well, and was a rumoured target according to the Globe and Mail’s Eric Duhatschek.
  • Marc Savard is said to be willing to waive his no-trade clause to go to Toronto, Ottawa or Detroit at this point. According to sources the Leafs have only mild interest in Savard and would only consider him as a part of a package involving long-time assets of interest Joe Colborne or Blake Wheeler. The Leafs for their part would then have to add more beyond Kaberle to get that in motion. It seems likely to me that with the three teams Savard has named as desirable destinations (Detroit, Ottawa, Toronto) not having strong interest in the centre, Peter Chiarelli will wait until July 1 when his no-movement clause becomes limited according to Nick Kypreos.

We will be doing a cover-it-live tonight starting around 6:45 p.m. ET.

Bowman was interested back then. He approached the Leafs. But I think he wanted autonomy on hockey decisions and that’s where it broke down. They wanted a puppet like the inexperienced JFJ.

Lmao!, all this hate for Burke right now, lets not forget Kabs NTC JUST GOT LIFTED!, and everyone is hating on Burke for not making a trade at the draft, but when he does make a huge deal, everyone saying shit will be kissing his ass!, So shut up and let him do the job he was brought here for, when he traded for Dion, everyone was all oh man he’s god, or the best gm, and fuck the Kessel deal who cares now etc… Then after tonight everyone saying he’s shit, and done a bad job and shit, all just a bunch of bandwagon jumpers, when he does something good you jump on when he don’t do shit, everyone rips him, I’m as disappointed as everyone, but he will make us better before next season, god it’s like his 2nd year here and look what he has done. but no, he don’t make a deal at a draft so it’s all man Bowman would’ve been better, or Burke is just a JFJ, don’t be stupid seriously. You watch when he does something big, EVERYONE will be on here praising him, and that just makes us look stupid either your with him and trust/believe him or ya don’t!

I’ll be happy with a ‘day 2′ that moves TML towards:
    Kovalchuk-Grabovski-Stalberg
    Kulemin-Bozak-Kessel
    Ladd-Kadri-Clarkson
    Sjostrom-Hanson-Orr
    Phaneuf-Beauchemin

I think we were all right. It looks like Mlse had already made their mind up on geting rid of JFJ.
So that means they didnt need Bowman as an adviser. Its at that point they put the search out for a new Gm.

Who will have a better NHL season?
    .
    a) Nazem Kadri
    b) Tyler Seguin
    .
p.s. I would take Kessel over Seguin, Seguin may be great, but he may not. Do we really need another young centre with Kadri and Bozak hopefully to be our future 1-2? We need more depth on the wings and Kessel is a big part of our wing mans going forward.

    .
“It’s like fishing,” Burke said. “There are times when you’ve got to be patient. Sometimes you’ve got to just keep covering water and waiting. So that’s what we’re going to do.”
    .
“Obviously we got offers on Tomas that didn’t meet our standard,” Burke said. “We tried to get into the card game here in the first round, we tried a couple things to get a first-rounder that did not involve Tomas but weren’t successful. That’s the way it goes sometimes.”
    .
Barring a deal, the Leafs will make their first pick Saturday at No. 62. And Burke said he’s still got a couple irons in the fire.

“I don’t like watching my scouts sit there,” Burke said. “So if we can pick up a second-rounder somehow at a cost that’s sensible and prudent then we’re going to do it, and if we can’t then we’ll wait.”

Could have moved down and picked up Nieterreder-just saying-but again, he’s only a prospect not a solidified player in Kessel.

what do you guys think grabovski for john mccfarland? lol who else could bring us a second? kulemin for rights to clarkson and a second? how about that? if we were able to make both those trades we could potentially snatch khabanov AND mccfarland! that would be a pretty solid draft for us…

A solid draft – but two big steps back for the regular season….I’m with Burke, we need NHL ready guys (in their prime – or near it), not lottery tickets that may be another 15 to 36 months away.

In hindsight, it’s too bad Burke didn’t make this year’s pick Top 5 protected in the Kessel deal.
Either if the pick is Top 5, next years 1st is out of the deal or if the pick is Top 5 the Leafs retain the pick and Boston gets the 2011 and 2012 First Round Picks instead.
