Rough Friday night for Leaf fans, but that’s in the past now. Rounds 2-7 of the 2010 NHL Entry Draft kicks off today at 1pm ET on NHL Network. The Maple Leafs are slated pick once in the 3rd round (62nd), once in the 4th round (112th), twice in the 5th round (122nd and 144th) and twice in the 7th round (182nd and 202nd).

Rumors are circulating that the Leafs will attempt to trade into the 2nd round if the price is reasonable.

This live blog will be updated with thoughts and pick analysis throughout the afternoon.

12:28 pm- Best available players still on the board:

John McFarland – OHL Sniper coming off a disappointing year, character concerns but tons of upside

Tyler Toffoli – High end offensive talent for the 67′s

John Merrill – Big, mobile American defender

Tyler Pitlick – Gritty two-way American center

Kirill Kabanov – One of the draft’s elite offensive talents, KHL concerns, nightmare ’09-’10 campaign

Stansilav Galiev – Sea Dogs’ winger, slick offensive player with playmaking ability

12:30 pm – Leafs have done very well for themselves in recent years on Day 2 of the draft. Notable late round selections in Gunnarsson, D’Amigo, Mikus, Stralman and White.

1:00 pm – Henricks reports that Stan Bowman and Brian Burke just wrappd up a discussion on the floor. Possible trade for one of the Hawk’s five 2nd round selections?

1:08 pm – McFarland finally off the board to the Panthers at #33. Great draft for them so far.

1:12 pm – John Merill falls all the way down to New Jersey at #38. What a steal.

1:18 pm – Here we go! Leafs acquire the 43rd pick for an unsigned draft choice. What the heck?

1:19 pm – Leafs take forward Brad Ross, a tenacious forward with some skill. Nice pick.

1:22 pm – Unsigned draft choice? Must be an NCAA kid like Hayes or D’Amigo.

1:24 pm – Must be Jimmy Hayes since Chicago has his brother Kevin.

1:27 pm – Los Angeles leap frogs Edmonton to grab Tyler Toffoli. Great job wheeling and dealing.

1:32 pm – Only 9 picks until Toronto’s next selection at 62. Beukeboom, Kabanov, Galiev, Shugg all still on the board.

1:46 pm – Burke and Lombardi talking. Leafs pick at 62 and the Kings pick at 70. Could we see a trade down?

1:47 pm – Toronto takes OHL sniper Greg McKegg with the 62nd pick. Didn’t think he would fall this far. 2nd line upside here, great selection.

2:03 pm – McKegg kind of got lost in the shuffle of talented OHL scorers, but he definitely belongs in those upper tiers. He was one of the league’s top players in the second half.

2:05 pm – Toronto trades into the 79th overall pick. Grabs Norwegian power forward Sondre Olden who played in Sweden this past year. Raw project pick with some nice offensive ability and two-way play. Gamble on upside here. Well worth it.

2:28 pm – Maple Leafs confirm that Jimmy Hayes will join his brother Kevin in the Chicago organization. Leaf fans breathe a sigh of relief as Jerry D’Amigo is still a Leaf.

2:36 pm – Rangers take Andrew Yogan with pick 100, a player I profiled during our MLHS preview series.

2:47 pm  – Toronto has just traded the 112th pick to Washington for the 116th and 146th picks.

2:55 pm – Leafs select Petter Granberg with pick 116, a 6’2 stay-at-home defenseman from Sweden. Similar style of game to Carl Gunnarsson. That’s two for Bergmann.

3:03 pm – Leafs trade the 122nd pick to Anaheim for checker Mike Brown.

3:25 pm – Leafs pick Brampton winger Sam Carrick at 144. Grinding forward who does a bit of everything. Safe pick.

3:27 pm – Leafs then select Swedish forward Daniel Brodin at 146. One of those tenacious players who was buzzing all over the ice for Sweden at the World Juniors. Another nice pick.

3:43 pm – Time for a small breather as Toronto doesn’t own a 6th round pick. The Leafs will pick twice in the 7th round. Based on the Swedish theme today and the Leafs’ love for size/projection, keep an eye on Brynas defenseman Simon Lof. Sebastien Stalberg, the brother of Viktor, is also available on the board.

4:15 pm – Leafs’ last pick of the day is Josh Nicolls from Saskatoon. They have traded their second 7th round selection to Edmonton for a 5th round pick in 2011.

Looks like we’re done for today.

I really hope Burke has some irons in the fire for July 1st. We really need some more fire power to begin the season with! I know we’ll be much improve from last year but we do need some players to score.

Note: Not that I’m inferring any sort of religious belief or promoting any one particular religious following, or any following, for that matter… I just didn’t want to inadvertantly trigger a conversation on the second taboo topic never to be brought up in mixed company.

This goes to prove what I think of Toronto the city. It has a small brother complex with cities around the world despite its size and diversity. It holds events like this to try and gain some kudos and it blows up, predictably, in their faces. G20 is always a backdrop for protest and Miller saying these protesters have no cause is the typical political smokescreen trying to make out there is no reason for these violent protests.

You guys who have never so much as spoken to a protester or understand their reasonings make me laugh. You wanna go out there and beat them up, kinda makes you sound like the thug seeing as they’re merely smashing up innanimate stuff.

    @ Cameron:
Yea, white collar crime definitely needs to be cracked down on. However, there are plenty of other ways, legal ways, to attack them.
    .
    @Richard-Steven Williams:
It’s not the protestors that I despise/want to see receive their just deserts. It’s the criminals disguised as protestors. It’s the same thing with alot of these native protests. It’s not the local natives that cause the trouble. It’s the jackasses from other areas that come in and stir shit up.
    .
Demanding government accountability and change is excellent. The route that these idiots take only justifies alot of the government’s actions. You guys who have never spoken to a politician, or only see things in black and white, make me laugh.

Richard I know people that are into protesting, I know some who are part of organizations for certain rights, if your trying to justify these actions?? by all means join them downtown. Miller did not say these protesters have no cause, he said a small group are anarchists but he would classify them as criminals. Please tell me how violence will help this protest. Tell us the reasoning.

Mike Brown is a Rosehill clone. He had 14 fights but not any with notable fighters. His fights were mainly draws, but he got badly beaten twice by BJ Crombeen.

That political ourburst or shall I say candid elaboration his political view point by Cameron was like a breath of fresh air. For a change, I mostly agree with his views. Governments around the world and more so in the west readily characterize protesters as anachists and blah blah…

These very elected governments have shuffed weaponizing of space at enormous cost down our throats. Ultimately, the common working man pays for it. There are so many other worthy egalitarian objectives. Cameron touched on some, which can be pursued by Governments. Instead, the emphasis is on keeping people in a constant state of fear and ruling masses around the world according to the political philosophies of the governing elites. Many of us who buy into it, actually take ownership of it, either by bent of mind or through naivete.

If it was not for protesters like the Suggergates movement if England long time ago, women would not have obtained the right to vote. It was only in 1967/68 that women were allowed to vote in the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. Similarly, segregation in USA and many oher issues were solved because of these elightened protestors. You can add green peace and so many others.

It is the easiest thing to lump together all protestors into a bunch of anarachists, but it does not solve the problem.

Well done Cameron M9 and others and keep it up.
