Savard to Leafs?

According to Howard Berger, who reported live from the NHL Entry Draft this weekend, there is a ton of steam behind the Leafs and Bruins looking to make a trade for forward Marc Savard. It seems the Leafs understand he could have a long-term effect from a concussion injury, but the upside of putting him and Kessel back together is just too good to pass up on. Berger explains that the deal does not involve Tomas Kaberle and that Kaberle talks are actually down to minor whispers at this point. Expect that situation to become more relevant as the off-season continues. The trade for Savard surrounds the availability of forward Nikolai Kulemin, who is a pending RFA and is seeking more money than the Leafs are willing to offer. That said, the Bruins could move forward with a $3M dollar Kulemin if they shed the contract of $5M plus from Savard. All in all, it becomes a win/win with the Bruins getting younger and cheaper, adding a player with high potential to become a solid defensive forward, while the Leafs would get their number one center, elite playmaker, and instant chemistry with Phil Kessel. SilverSevenSens now state he has waived his NMC to play for either the Leafs or Senators. ESPN chimes in on it as well. “Reports started to surface that Bruins forward Marc Savard and his agent have eased off the player-s limited no-trade claue that allows the Bruins to deal Savard to only five undisclosed teams. Chiarelli would not confirm or deny the reports. ‘I’m not really into speculating that kind of stuff,’ he said.”

    @ Charlie:

Agreed. The concussion risk is huge, and if it was Kaberle for Savard, I would say no way. However, a few prospects who might one day be 40 point guys for an 80-90 point guy who might be one hit away from retirement seems like an okay deal to me. You’re just swapping one gamble for another.

    @ canucksnaphook:

Potential 30 goal guy with one year left on his deal, in a year when the Leafs are short on scoring forwards…if taking him on will encourage Chiarelli to give us something good, why not? I don’t want him either, but I can stomach him for a year, easily, and if he decides to have one of his good years, he could be very useful.

The Star is suggesting Grabo for Savard: http://www.thestar.com/sports/hockey/nhl/mapleleafs/article/829377–burke-ready-to-deal-and-has-savard-in-his-sights

I don’t see it though. Boston is looking to move Savard because they have too many centres, and want to free up some cash. While Grabo makes a lot less, his cap hit is only $1 million less than Savard’s. I can’t see that being worth their while. Better that they take a package of picks and prospects, thereby freeing up $4 million to play with in the FA market.
Then the Leafs will have too many centres, and can try and swing Grabo for a similarly talented, but equally overpaid winger.

    @ Jordan:
So are you finally done with the ridiculous trades of Kaberle or Kulemin for Savard?

Boys, like I said a couple of days ago, BB is going to go after Perry. Not sure what the package will be but I believe he fits what Burke is after. A young scoring winger with size and some sand paper to his game. Maybe it takes the Ducks getting in on the Kovy sweepstakes come July 1 like some have speculated. This talk about Savard coming aboard in theory sounds like it could work due to the Kessel conection but not sure in this stage of the rebuild you want to bring in 33 year old with recent concusion concerns. This Savard trade would be as a last resort as far as I am concerned.

Sources say the Ducks and Bobby Ryan look to be parting ways, look for a possible trade out of Anahiem. Leafs will show interest.

Imagine we could work a soft trade with Boston and then flip Kabs + to Anaheim for Ryan?

    Hey guys,

This is my first post here. Long time reader. I really enjoy the passion that you guys have for the team and I look forward to continued discussions.

My two cents re: Savard. IMO you make this trade in a heartbeat. I hear people saying “he’s soft, he’s got health issues, he’s expensive and he’s old.” We need to put this trade in context.
    1. Making this trade makes us INSTANTLY better and gives us a legitimate first line center
    2. His contract is frontloaded, in the last 3 year, it’s $2.5 million total
    3. He’s been durable for all of his career and is almost a point a game player so I’d take that softness on my team.
    4. He will give us another center to extract the most out of Kessel, production wise.
    5. In responses to their being better options, I ask who? What evidence do we have to base that on? Do we know that a) guys like Thornton are available, and b) we have the assests to get them (would require a lot more than what it would take for Savard e.g. Grabo, Kulemin, long end prospects)? And this feeds directly into my next point
    6. The issue of trading Kulemin for Savard. I would rather trade Grabo than Kulemin but no way do I deem Kulemin a dealbreaker. He’s a solid player and I like him but at $3 million he’s being paid too much and we have enough players like him. I think we grossly overrate our own players and we are again falling into that trap. I recall a similar debate with Pronger for Kaberle and Steen. A lot of Leaf fans were against it because the fear of trading young assets (in the case of Steen at the time) for a veteran. Savard has more of an impact on this team for the next 3 years than Kulemim does. It will be easier to find a Kulemin replacement than a Savard replacement. That’s the simple truth of the NHL.
    7. Lastly, trading for an older player does not mean we abandon the youth movement. We need to get out of black and white, all or nothing thinking. All good teams have a balance of youth and veterans.

If Burke were to trade Kulemin for Savard it is an extremely short sighted move. The Leafs are not serious contenders for at least a couple years. At that time Kule will be a better player than Savard. In fact Kule might be better than Savard this coming season. Once again Chiarelli will take the Leafs out behind the shed and give them a pants down spankin!

    @ B Leaf:

What if Burkie doesn’t want to pay him what he thinks he’s worth? So the better question is then what other player is better return (realistic) for Kulemin? If you offered me a point a game first line center for a player who would not be coming back I’d take it and run.

Again what is short sighted is looking at this trade without considering all angles. And If Kuelmin is that good why haven’t the Leafs deemed him worth $3 million?

I think we’d be nuts to trade Kuli. The Bruins owner, Jeremy Jacobs is as tight with his cash as was that old bastard, Harold Ballard. The Bruins would like to shed themselves of Savard’s contract. So let’s offer them something like Mitchell and one of our depth defencemen(say no 8 or 9 on the depth chart.)

Plus, Savard has limited the teams he’s willing to go to. Maybe we can screw the Bruins as badly as they screwed us in the Kessel deal!
