Leafs Acquire Versteeg
Share

On the eve of unrestricted free agency, the Maple Leafs made a big first move to upgrade their forward group. According to ESPN’s Pierre LeBrun, the club has swung a deal to acquire Blackhawks winger Kris Versteeg and prospect Billy Sweatt in exchange for winger Viktor Stalberg, along with forward prospects Chris Didomenico and Philipe Paradis.

Versteeg, still just 24 years of age, will instantly become a big component of the Maple Leafs’ core moving forward. He has two seasons of 20+ goals under his belt already, and is under contract for two more years at $3.08 million per season.

Meanwhile, Sweatt, the Blackhawks’ 2007 2nd round pick, was ranked as the 7th best prospect in the Chicago farm system by Hockey’s Future. He is described as a talented two-way player with top end speed and finishing ability on the rush. By all accounts, Sweatt is also an excellent defensive player and effective penalty killer, which should ease the pain of losing Paradis.

    @ Gary Shields:
Thanks! I’ll keep that in mind for the future :P . I’ll definitely throw in a ‘frank’ or two if I ever decide to post anything on Hockeybuzz…

    @ Garrett Bauman:
That is a really good break down GB, I like the deal my self. The thought of what Stalberg may eventually be with his blinding speed may be hard to give up, but Versteeg is the better 2-way player. From scouting reports I hear Sweat is very fast also but what is remarkable about his talent is that he is able to finish at that high speed, unlike Stalberg a lot of times. Stalberg was a 7th round pick, so just another example on why great drafting can benefit a team. I look forward to seeing Versteeg play a pivotal role with Kadri’s development on his right wing. ( I said this 2 months ago)

Burke drafted Scandanavians this year not named the twins. Who would have predicted him doing that eh?

Actually, it doesn’t surprise me at all. He’s made it pretty clear, he’s looking for talent, wherever he can find it as we don’t have too many options for upgrading the roster.

I laugh when I read posts about how Burke will let this guy or that guy go because he didn’t bring him in. Yep, that’s it… that’s how he evaluates players. ‘Oh, you’re not mine, I had better dump you for someone good like I would pick…’ Classic.

He is going to select the players that make the most sense to achieve his goal, and that’s to be the next GM that wins a cup in Toronto. He doesn’t give a shit about where they came from, what team they played for or who brought them into the organization. As he said in one interview, “If they start playing hockey on Mars, we’ll be looking for talent there…” or something, to that effect.

The bottom line, this isn’t about ego or any of that crap. This is a driven, intelligent man, who knows what he wants to accomplish and is dead serious about pulling it off.

Just got done reading your post that breaks down the deal from the logical thinking of both GM’s at the time of the deal and have to say you did a great job!!
Welcome to MLHS and it’s going to be good having a Philosophy Major around here to give his “educated view” on all Leafs issues!!

It’s kind of funny how frequently it is assumed that many people on here must be some low IQ knuckle dragger, drunk in a bar slurring Go Leafs!

I’m sure there are many people on here who are quite well educated, drunks in a bar slurring Go Leafs!

    @ LeafsRyan.:
Guys, I dearly hope there is some beef coming in to the Leafs Forward ranks in the next few days. Versteeg is 5′ 9″ (5′ 10″ on the Hawks web-site) and 182 lbs.
    Grabovski is 5′ 11″ 183 lbs.
    Kessel is 5’11″ 180
    Bozak is 6′ 1″ 195
    Nazem Kadri is 6′ 0″ 167 lbs……

That is a lot of smallish guys in your potential top 6 Forwards. Who rides shotgun?
All the beef is 4th line help really, and not guys who eat big minutes, or set up big goals with work on the boards.
Are we expecting a big rabbit from Burkie’s hat in the next few days, or has Burke been replaced by Bob Gainey?

Good trade for Toronto. We get the best player of the deal in Versteeg and a really good prospect in Sweat. I liked the players we gave up, and wish them all the best, but without question we won this trade. Good job Burkie!! You’re the man! Keep the ball rolling July 1st.

@ Stanley goes to White Kessel:
Well, in that case, maybe Los Angeles should remove B. Schenn before his future Calder Trophy win kicks them in the ass!!
    Lets break it down:
Would you do Kaberle and Ryan for Brown? I would would and I hope you would as well.
That leaves D’Amigo and Reimer for B. Schenn and I really doubt LA would want anything to do with that swap.

    @ Bob is your uncle:

Hahaha, well it looks like you and Burke are on the same page.

He said that when he first came here in a TV interview. The media were all over him “What are you going to do? Your predecessors gave away all your draft picks. You have almost no tradable assets, and nothing in the farm system. How do you think you’re going to be able to make any meaningful improvements to this team?” [being the knowledgeable hockey people that they are...]

He responded that he would go outside of the normal channels and find whatever talent he could. Yes, he would go the Colledge route, but also to Europe and other places. If they start playing hockey on Mars, we’ll be looking for talent there!

Apparently not a lot of people were listening to him. He has gone and done exactly what he said he was going to do, and rather successfully I might add.

But many people go on about, it’s just his ego talking, it’s all just bluster, he only does this and that for the attention, he only likes players of a certain nationality, etc.

Funny, but that description sounds more like Don Cherry, someone many people believe to be the greatest hockey mind, well, on Mars probably…

Just hung up phone with Dean Lombardi. Asked him if he was closing in on Kovalchuk, “No.” Asked if he’s still in the mix, “Not sure.”
