The MLHS Free Agency Contest

This is your chance to rise above the rest as the most knowledgeable MLHS user outside of Alec Brownscombe and win the authentic new Leafs jersey in the process.

Here is how the contest will work:

Pick three signings (not including re-signings) you think Brian Burke will make this off-season and include a prediction for both the length and the salary figure of the contracts. List the salary per annum. Should the contract be front or back loaded, we will use the pro-rated cap hit figure as the correct salary (in any cases where the salary and cap hit differ, we will use the cap hit). The winner will be decided via a points-system:

Points System Per Prediction
1 Point
– Correct player
1 Point – # of contract years predicted is correct
1 Point – Predicted salary is within 500k of actual salary
Bonus Point – Predicted Salary is within 100k of actual salary

The jersey will be ordered on August 1st after the winner is decided and he or she supplies sizing, preferred name/number details and home or away colour choice. You can go with any Leaf player, your own preferred customization or “MLHS, #1″ if you want to be in my good books. This should assure the winner has it on his or her back in time for the start of the season.

Versteeg got 20 goals playing 3rd line minutes. Going to look good in the leafs top 6!

I mean, how will the Leafs ever get anywhere if they keep giving up AHL forwards & average college players for proven NHL top 6 forwards?

    What a smug prick.

    @ Jordan:

Meh, 7C rating on HF. Was so looking forward to cheering for Dido. I’m okay to give up Stalberg.

Versteeg was a very visible player in the playoffs. Burkey and the boys would have noticed that.

After my initial shock, I’ve come to see this as Burke wants someone to make the team better right now. Versteeg does that.

Right now, he’s better than Stalberg. The other two prospects are probably a couple of years away from even pushing for a spot on the Leafs and the prospect he got back most likely impresses him more than the ones he had.

Although I first thought we paid too much, after thinking about it, you can’t deny we just got better as a team for this season, and I think that’s the objective…

just wish Versteeg was bigger 5’10 179lbs is pretty small.

Ok so now we sign Kovy and trade for Savard , keep Kabs

    Kovy Savard Versteeg
    Kuli Bozak Kessel

    pretty sick top six

    1) Raffi Torres/ 3 years/ 2.1 cap hit
    2) Eric Belanger/ 2 years/ 1.5 cap hit
    3) Matthew Lombardi/ 5 years/ 3.5 cap hit

I don’t mind giving up Paradis and I don’t think Stalberg was ever going to become a great player, but I will miss Dido. I wanted to see what he could do on the marlies. Oh well

A 5’9″ third/second line, former 5th round Bruin pick, Hawk plus a college player for three of our better prospects/players? Doesn’t matter how you sugar coat it, it doesn’t fly IMO! Fuck it!

OK, I also have had time to absorb this a bit and I’m OK with it, as others have said, Versteeg , although he is small is further along than Stalberg, Sweatt is at least a little ahead of Paradis and Dido and none of them are a lock to even make it to the show. Stalberg has great speed and size but a bit of a project to be sure. Versteeg’s playoff and cup run should be excellent for us, reasonable cap hit.

so Stalberg for Versteeg we increase what? about 2.25 on cap hit and if we trade for Savardthat is another $4M cap hit and if we sign Kovi for $8,75M that is $15M additional cap, now I am sure Burke would like to keep Kabs so I would expect Grabo is the odd man out which would make the extra cap hit more like $12M, can we handle that? Probably.

Hmmm. I’m not sure what to think of this deal. Lets say Sweatt is an equal prospect to Didomenico. We’re basically giving up Stalberg and Paradis for Versteeg.
While I was hoping for big things for Stalberg and don’t really know much about Paradis, I’m thinking the Leafs win this deal by the simple fact they are getting the better player.
But, Chicago also wins, because they are getting Cap relief in the deal and 3 good young players.

Looks like the “win now” approach has ruled the day on this one. I suspect Burke is trying to prevent another top 5 going the B’s next year. I know we tend to overvalue our prospects but this sure feels like too much.

I am sad that we had to get rid of Dido in this trade but I am pumped to get Versteeg and Sweatt. Versteeg looked terrific playing third line minutes in the playoffs and I think he will fit our second line well. I think this is just the tip of the iceberg for Burkie as Our Draft day just started!
This also adds another roster spot for Burke and Nonis to tinker with.

  • Stanley goes to White Kessel

…and now the boards go crazzzzy!

What up boys? Just when I was gonna post my killer UFA deals, we gotta go trade Dido and a couple of other guys (haha). I think it was 3 days ago that we were arguing over whether Dido could be considered “untouchable” because Burkie valued heart and character soooo much that he would keep Dido at all costs, and because he made a special hyperbaric chamber for him lol. And now look!

And yet again – who saw this coming…? No matter how many of us post or come up with trades, we can never get it right! FUCK!!!!

Not sure I Iike this. How physical is Versteeg?
