The MLHS Free Agency Contest

This is your chance to rise above the rest as the most knowledgeable MLHS user outside of Alec Brownscombe and win the authentic new Leafs jersey in the process.

Here is how the contest will work:

Pick three signings (not including re-signings) you think Brian Burke will make this off-season and include a prediction for both the length and the salary figure of the contracts. List the salary per annum. Should the contract be front or back loaded, we will use the pro-rated cap hit figure as the correct salary (in any cases where the salary and cap hit differ, we will use the cap hit). The winner will be decided via a points-system:

Points System Per Prediction
1 Point
– Correct player
1 Point – # of contract years predicted is correct
1 Point – Predicted salary is within 500k of actual salary
Bonus Point – Predicted Salary is within 100k of actual salary

The jersey will be ordered on August 1st after the winner is decided and he or she supplies sizing, preferred name/number details and home or away colour choice. You can go with any Leaf player, your own preferred customization or “MLHS, #1″ if you want to be in my good books. This should assure the winner has it on his or her back in time for the start of the season.

Here is a full list of available free agents for your referral.

Versteeg has scored 20 goals in both NHL seasons playing mostly 3rd line minutes. My first reaction was not positive but the more I think about it the more I like it. I think he has also scored more short handed goals in the last 2 years than the leafs have.

I am from MINNESOTA and a FAN OF THE WCHA! Bill Sweatt is a STUD, equally if not better than STALBERG! Good size, fast, SWEeAT shot. He played on mediocre Collorado College teams.

He will fit the LEAFS just fine! Keep an eye on him!

To have 26 points in 30 games as a Freshman in the WCHA is GOOD!

    NICE TRADE!

I wouldn’t be surprised if Burke hung on to Kaberle and traded Schenn to LA for Dustin Brown or Simmonds (thus bringing the Schenn brothers together) or trading Schenn to Anaheim as part of a package for Ryan.

    My 3 picks….(and I might be a complete idiot, but let’s giv’er…)
Ilya Kovalchuk – 8.8mil per yr / 5 yrs (to put him over Crosby & Malkin)
    Raffi Torres – 2.85mil per yr / 3 yrs
    Chris Higgins – 2.65 per yr / 3 yrs
could be WAY off, but I’ve got to thro in something for a chance at the new jersey.

I think Burke will try to add the size of Manny and Colby. Lombardi fills the first line center role while the young guys develop. I really believe Grabovski is gone if Lombardi is brought in. This could be changed considerably if Burke moves one or two bodies in trades and some of these pieces are added via that route. We may not see any bodies brought in from free agency or a minimal one at that.

Wait a minute, is Kris Versteeg the final piece of a puzzle that completes a package to actually acquire Bobby Ryan from Anaheim?
Geez, I’m probably half asleep and dreaming now… the fact that BB is BB makes me contemplate the potentially ridiculous – but, just throwin’ it out there…he does pull the trigger on moves no one anticipates…
I need to sleep and be ready for tomorrow.

    @ doktordave:
With Versteeg coming in, it will likely be something like
    Boogaard 2 yrs @ $1.2 Million
    Artuykin 2 yrs @ $2.6 Million
    Sutton 2 yrs @ $2.4 million
    Brad Winchester 1 year @ $1.2 million.

And a trade of Kaberle for Wheeler and a pick next year.
