Mitchell re-signs for 1 year at $725,000

John Mitchell joins Nik Kulemin as the second Leaf to re-sign with the club today.  After initially not being qualified by Toronto, Mitchell hit unrestricted free agency with an understanding that Brian Burke intended to offer him a new contract.  The purpose of waiting was financially-driven as it allowed Toronto to save at the very least 250,000 on Mitchell because he was not qualified.

Clearly the Leafs management team still considers Mitchell a possible bottom-six player on their team going forward.  As indicated in Garrett’s excellent review of Mitchell’s season, the Waterloo native will have to prove a whole lot to earn a permanent spot on Brian Burke’s squad.  Mitchell will be looking to course-correct a downswing in his offensive production (12 G in 08-09, 6 G in 09-10) while further strengthening his reputation as a hard-working, determined grinder.

The move will also create some intense roster competition, as you can be virtually assured that not all of Mitchell, Caputi, Hanson and Brown will fit into the lineup at once, especially considering the possibility of an additional forward via trade or a rookie (Kadri) making the squad.  Mitchell will need to have a strong season to have a future in the blue and white.

Well, quite simply Mr R, you made a statement that Stalberg played MOSTLY 4th line minutes. The facts show otherwise. This seems to bother you.

dude – not much bothers me… take it or leave it..

@ Andrew R: “I think Stalberg will be the best player in this trade when its all said and done”
I have to respectfully declined this comment. Versteeg is the better player. Unlike Stalberg, Versteeg is ready for top six minutes, can play on the PP, PK, on either wing and takes the draw!!! Incredible!!! Stalberg might beat Versteeg in a race for speed but Versteeg has more skill sets to offer. The choice is logical, I’d pick Versteeg every time.

Oh I have a quick question. Does anyone know the website that shows the line combos and where player play and with who? I wanna know if Versteeg needs high talent guys to play with or not.

I think its safe to say 30 goals 30 assists from the guy playing top 2 lines minutes.

Leafs are running out of cap room and I am sure they want to enter next season with a cushion of almost $3-5 mil in case injuries come along and they need to acquire a player during the season or at the trade deadline.
    .
I really wonder if Kulemin might be attached in a Kaberle trade? Just to sweeten the pot with another team. Leafs really need a #1 centre and I was hoping it was Philly but they only asked Gagne to was his NTC and not Jeff Carter so I don’t see a fit there.
    .
By the sound of Burke’s tone about teams who missed out on signing a big-name defencemen, I really do feel this time that Kaberle will be moved by this time next week.
    .
With Kubina now off the market, there are literarly NO top d-men available on the UFA market. That is, unless a team takes a chance claiming Souray off waivers.

I like this signing alot. Burke got Mitchell for cheaper than it would of cost to resign him. Mitchell has the size and the talent and hopefully this is a kick in the ass for him to pick up the work ethic and work hard game in game out. I think he can do it.

    Go leafs Go!!!
