Mitchell re-signs for 1 year at $725,000

John Mitchell joins Nik Kulemin as the second Leaf to re-sign with the club today.  After initially not being qualified by Toronto, Mitchell hit unrestricted free agency with an understanding that Brian Burke intended to offer him a new contract.  The purpose of waiting was financially-driven as it allowed Toronto to save at the very least 250,000 on Mitchell because he was not qualified.

Clearly the Leafs management team still considers Mitchell a possible bottom-six player on their team going forward.  As indicated in Garrett’s excellent review of Mitchell’s season, the Waterloo native will have to prove a whole lot to earn a permanent spot on Brian Burke’s squad.  Mitchell will be looking to course-correct a downswing in his offensive production (12 G in 08-09, 6 G in 09-10) while further strengthening his reputation as a hard-working, determined grinder.

The move will also create some intense roster competition, as you can be virtually assured that not all of Mitchell, Caputi, Hanson and Brown will fit into the lineup at once, especially considering the possibility of an additional forward via trade or a rookie (Kadri) making the squad.  Mitchell will need to have a strong season to have a future in the blue and white.

How is it that ppl on this site believe Stalberg WILL be the best player in this trade? Stalberg has not even a full year in the NHL and in all honesty wasn’t that good. Often times I had to look for him. Versteeg since joining the black hawks has had to fight for ice time. His first two and only two seasons in the NHL, has produced 20 or more goals. Was a calder nominee, scored three short handed goals last year, can play on the power play, can play centre, can snipe… the list goes on… but no… some how ppl still believe that Stalberg is the better player. HOW?!

Stalberg also saw very limited ice time and played A LOT of 4th line minutes when we did play.

Mr R, it appears you don’t mind, shall we say, ‘stretching the truth’.
    .
Stalberg had 14:36 TOI/gm last year. Colby Armstrong had 14:47 TOI/gm and I don’t consider him a 4th line player. 14:36 min is not VERY limited ice time, especially for a rookie.
    .
Also, Stalberg played approximately 70% of his time on the 1st, 2nd, or 3rd lines.
    .
Gretzky played with Semenko, does that make him a 4th liner?

    @ long_suffering_leaf_fan:
Well at least he didn’t give him big money like Antropov and Poni two guys who wasted 8-10 years of other prospects chances of making this team better.

oh, and since this is the John Mitchell thread – I like him being re-signed for one more year – I want him to have one more chance. I know he hasn’t lived up to expectations yet – but I’m glad he’ll get one more kick at the can.

I don’t care what anyone says about Mitchell. He wants to be here…badly, and has more upside then down. His determination is infectious. I’m glad he’s staying.

Better argument would have been what would be scarier than stalberg (who’s done shit) is Versteeg playing with actual top players. If Versteeg can score like he did on the third line, than ultimately, his potential is far superior to stalbergs.

Mitchell’s signing is reasonable for one year. It’s a depth move in case of injury or one of the prospects (Kadri) doesn’t make the team or if Grabo gets traded. The one year term is a message that this is his last chance to get a significant deal with the Leafs. Mitchell is inconsistent but can show flashes of being a regular NHL 2nd or 3rd liner.
Among other things, he needs to work on his defensive responsibilities and to crash the net more in offensive situations.

I get the whole IMO… however, I can throw that out there about anybody then. The facts and stats aren’t there to suggest Stalberg will be a better player than Versteeg.
LOL makes me laugh. Stalberg is really fast. That must mean he has great potential… far better than Versteeg!
If stalberg truly had skill and quick hands, he would have scored more than 9 goals. Kessel was able to create his own chances out of nothing. That’s Skill set. Stalberg just has speed.

    @Andrew R

Don’t get me wrong. If this trade never went down. I would be happy giving Stalberg another chance to prove his worth. But realistically, I saw a player that had fantastic speed but couldn’t finish at that level. He couldn’t make plays at that level.
I could sit here and say IMO Kadri will be a 100 point player during his first year in the NHL. But how can you believe me when I say that when the kid has played only 1 game. Doesn’t add up. Facts and stats show how a player grows and what they are capable of. Stalberg has no sign of being a 30-40 goal scorer.
