102 Hours Worth Of Free Agency Thoughts

Okay, so my math may be a little off.  It’s Canada Day weekend, there shouldn’t be any arithmetic.  Unless, of course, you are an NHL general manager, than you better hope you have your math hat on.  A quick note to say I hope our fellow Canadian readers, as well as our loyal readers situated the south had an enjoyable holiday weekend.

Now, let’s divulge into what has so far been a somewhat reserved free agency period, One timer style.

–The big news coming out of free agency this hour is this report out of the L.A. Times that indicate the Los Angeles Kings are quite far apart on signing Ilya Kovalchuk. While they may not be out of the running entirely, Helene Elliott suggests the prospects are quite dim.  So where does Kovalchuk go?  The Islanders reportedly seem to be the only team willing to offer him the term he is looking for (rumoured to be 10 million for at least 10 years) but are there other suitors?  What about New Jersey?  Toronto?  One would think that although Burke would love to pull off the major move of free agency, the reasons Kings GM Dean Lombardi is balking about bringing in Kovy (term) is likely the same reasons Burkie has reservations.

–I thought the signing of Colby Armstrong was a good, albeit unsurprising addition.  While you can argue all day that they may have overpaid, the fact is, as Garrett Bauman pointed out, the market tends to get overinflated on July 1, and this year wasn’t all that different.  Still, at $3 million, “Army” gives the Leafs a guy who can hit, play tough, kill penalties, and chip in offensively.  Some are already bouncing around comparisons of a youthful Darcy Tucker, and I think that would suit most of us just fine if Armstrong could deliver that type of performance.

–My only word of advice to fans, not just to Toronto, but any team in general: Don’t doom these poor guys before they even step on the ice.  Already in free agency, I have heard lots of negativity towards certain signings, which creates a toxic atmosphere all around.

–Really thought we would see Martin Biron in Montreal backing up Carey Price, but I can’t say I don’t enjoy the fact they settled for Alex Auld instead, a move that has even the most loyal Habs fan shaking his head.  Biron also had his deal announced at 12:03, making July 1 the only day in the NHL where tampering doesn’t exist (unless of course your name is Brian Burke, then I am sure Gary would find a way.)

–Not sure I would have paid the dollar amount, or the yearly term, that the Senators did when they signed Sergei Gonchar, but the fact of the matter is the Senators got a good puck moving defenseman who will improve their powerplay dramatically.  Pittsburgh, meanwhile, could make off very smart by turning Sergei Gonchar into younger players Paul Martin and Zbynek Michalek.

–I was upset a little bit to see Manny Malhotra be taken off the market courtesy of the Vancouver Canucks.  Malhotra is a guy I thought could really anchor the Maple Leafs penalty kill and fourth line, all the while bringing leadership and dependability to the team.  It is, however, quite possible that the Leafs were inquiring about the services of Malhotra, but were turned away by what can only be described as a steep price, no matter how you feel about inflated markets.

–Good on Tampa Bay for the early moves they have made this summer with Steve Yzerman at the helm.  Every single person who has dealt with Yzerman in the GM role say he is very educated, fair, and highly intelligent, which are all tangibles that could describe his play on the ice as well.  It looks like Stevie Y has a real firm vision for the Lightning, and fans in that area should be getting real excited.

–Speaking on the Lightning, I couldn’t have been happier to see Pavel Kubina return to Tampa Bay, a place I know he really enjoyed playing.  I was also one of the (few) Kubina supporters during his time with the Leafs.  While he doesn’t have great speed, I thought he used his size and intelligence well, and has a big, heavy shot from the point.

–A quick shout out to Flames GM Darryl Sutter.  What’s that?  There is nothing clinically wrong with him?  Oh…my mistake.  Seriously, did Sutter spend June 30th smoking weed and watching the AMC channel?  Hello, McFly, it’s not three years ago.  And further to the point, Sutter knows that team three years ago wasn’t very good either right?

–Nice to see Nikolai Kulemin and John Mitchell back in the fold.  I knew the Leafs would get a deal done with Kulemin, and when it was announced, I thought it was very fair for both sides involved.  Mitchell, meanwhile, will be the on the bubble and he knows it.  That contract is small enough that it could easily be allocated to the minors should Mitchell start the season slow.

So that’s the first 102 hours, give or take a few Molson Canadian…err, I mean hours.  What will the next hundreds of hours bring?  Who’s to say, but hopefully there is more excitement, and hopefully the Leafs can address their scoring.  One way or another.

With 102 hours of free agency in the books, what do you think so far?

I think that is a bluff. He has been saying all along that without a first rounder the Leafs draft began July 1. Why would he be at home when the rest of the Leaf brass was in T.O.?

Because it has been a very difficult year for his family, and so he’s spending more time with them than he has in the past. That’s my take on it anyway.

I’ve always thought something was up with Kovi coming here: Nonis getting a bit flabbergasted on Watters Show when he said, “so you’re not in on Kovi then?” when talking about cap space, Burkey being MIA on July 1st, etc. but when Burke said, “I don’t even know who his agent is” I get the feeling that we _may_ have been in on it, but BB was turned down, and decided to pretend like it didn’t even happen to save face.

    Why would we want Zherdev?

Because he is stupidly talented, and we’re not going to get someone with that much talent through trade, except by giving up very important assets, or from our prospect pool, with the exception of Kadri. Versteeg can shuffle over to the left side, and Zherdev will fit right in. Sure, he’ll frustrate the hell out of the coaches, and fans will hate him as much as they love him, but he won’t cost anything more than money, he’s still in his mid-20s, and if he gets his shit together, he may well be an 80 point guy.
And if he is an 80 point guy, we flip him in a deadline deal for a young player with better character, and a couple of draft picks. If not, demote the fucker, and the Marlies suddenly become a lot more fun to watch.

I would have enjoyed Kovi in LA won’t have to see that dick as much, sadly won’t happen. Him as a devil was fitting and seemed good flair for a city watching the trap for years. As a devil he would be so dangerous with Parise who IMO is one of the best players around. Him in NJ makes for a lot of tough games, him in the Isle doesn’t support him with enough supporting cast to be to dangerous. It would be nice to be a fly on the walla watching interaction between Tavarres and Kovi. Seem like completely different ppl.

Well okay, demote the fucker and he will defect back to the K, but whatever. He’s off the cap, and out of town. MLSE pays out a few extra bucks for a few years (boohoo) and we all move on with our lives.

    @ Edward Flannery:

He’d be good for Tavares I think. I’d rather be 19 and playing in Kovi’s shadow than 19 and having the entire fanbase of a team resting their hopes on me before I am ready to thrive.

I am actually a little scared for the next move Burk may make. I believe he truly wants to make a Cinderella run next year, and I believe he thinks he needs Kaberle to do it. Look for a Trade for a top 6 forward that does not involve Kaberle. Looking at what we gave up to get Versteeg I shiver at what may be coming next.

Stand Pat, see where we are at .

@ peterbleafs: He didn’t send a blackberry to Sweden last July 1 in attempt to lock up the Sedin twins. Kovalchuk would require the same face to face sell job. He won’t get another chance to sign a player of Kovalchuk’s age and caliber very often. Burke wants to get better now and that means giving his personal attention to this signing. If Kovalchuk just wants money he would have signed in Atlanta. LA can’t afford him with all of the young draft picks they will have to lock up in a year or two. Why would he go to NYI with that dive of a building, past history and suspect future. Help win another cup in NJ so what? There window is closing with Brodeur showing age. Don’t be surprised if he takes less money and term to come to T.O.

Zherdev, I remember everyone talking about him last year, and I remember getting all pumped that we had a chance to pick him up after NY waved him,but we didn`t.So what has changed that makes people think Burke would be interested this year?

Me too. I’m at a loss as for Kaberle’s true value: is he worth a “legit top 6 forward with size”? As a one-year rental, I’m not so sure — I almost think we’d be better off waiting till the trade deadline and unloading him to some playoff contender/hopeful for some picks and prospects to replenish the cupboard a bit after the Versteeg trade. Right now, the only teams that are likely in the playoffs and are depleted on the D are Buffalo and arguably New Jersey, but I can’t see them giving up something worthwhile. I think it’s better to pick up a UFA like Zherdev or Afinoganov and roll with what we have.

    @ dmbsports:

He also had a long standing personal history with the Sedins, which he doesn’t have with Kovalchuk. I’m not sure Kovalchuk would give a shit about a visit from Burke.

    @ wiski:

Last year he had received an arbitration award of nearly 4 million, and the Leafs had more guys with a history of being top 6 forwards, even if every one of them was only qualified to be #6 at best. Perhaps this year he comes cheaper. Perhaps this year there is more space for him, with Blake, Stajan, Poni and Hagman out of the picture.
