Maple Leafs Sign Brett Lebda

According to the Toronto Maple Leafs official Twitter feed, the club announced today the signing of free agent defenseman Brett Lebda to a two-year deal worth $1.45 million per season.

Lebda spent the last five seasons with the Detroit Red Wings after the organization signed him as a free agent in 2004, picking up a Stanley Cup ring in during his stay in ’08.

Lebda’s career high in points is 18.  He had 16 two years ago, but saw his total fall to just 8 points last year, though he did only play 63 games due to a back injury.

Lebda has great pace and puck-rushing ability, though his point-total doesn’t necessarily reflect that.  The Buffalo Native is thick for his height at 195 pounds, but is a bit undersized at 5’9. He does play a game bigger than his frame would suggest. $1.45 million seems a tad pricey, but hopes will be that Lebda will be able to improve production on a Leafs blueline that doesn’t have the type of elite offensive weapons from the blueline like Detroit had in Brian Rafalski and Nik Lidstrom (this providing Kaberle is dealt, and no doubt this seems like a poor-man’s replacement).

A move to bring in yet another defender gives the Toronto Maple Leafs more depth on the back end, and perhaps is a precursor to a potential Tomas Kaberle deal going down in the next few days.

Brett Lebda in many ways is very much a poor man’s Ian White. Both are offensive-minded defencemen. Lebda’s not as good defensively as White, but is a better puckhandler and skater (overall White is better though). Another thing that I’ve noticed is that this guy can REALLY skate and handle the puck and move it very efficiently up the ice to create offense. I think it’s very fair to say he would be our fastest defenseman. I also believe he’s our 2nd best puckhandling D-man on this team (believe it or not) at this moment IMO, next to Kaberle.

My point is, even though this guy hasn’t put up impressive offensive numbers by any means (very similar offensive numbers to Schenn, who’s a defensive D-man) this guy actually has good offensive skills (if not so much defensive skills). Not to overrate this guy, but I feel he’s our 3rd most OFFENSIVELY SKILLED defenceman right now (not 3rd best or especially 3rd most offensively proficient D-man, that’s a different story), behind Phaneuf & Kabs. From what I know, his biggest downside is that he can be quite suspect defensively at times and his defensive positioning definitely leaves something to be desired. Considering we had to pay Exelby 1.4 mil or something, Lebda’s deal at 1.45 mil/year is not bad at all. Definitely not a steal, but fair deal, IMO.

He should provide us good depth at 5th or 6th spot.
