- Among the youngsters impressing at the Leafs‘ prospect camp is 2006 NCAA draftee Tyler Ruegsegger. Tyler is a smart, skilled winger whose size and skating concerns may limit hit ability to become an impact player in the NHL. He was not offered an entry-level contract by the Maple Leafs after a 4 year stint with the University of Denver, but did finish this past season at a point-a-game rate. However, the club is strongly considering offering Tyler Bozak‘s former teammate an AHL contract to play for the Toronto Marlies, though that would leave the door open for another team to swoop in and steal Ruegsegger away with an ELC.

- Recent Maple Leafs’ free agent signee Brett Lebda is hopeful of taking on a bigger role this coming season. Coming over as a depth defenseman on a very strong Red Wings’ blueline, Lebda hopes to become more of a 4/5 type defenseman with the Leafs. Burke commented on Lebda’s great skating and puck moving ability, though stressed that the signing is not tied to an imminent Kaberle trade.

@ 2 Minutes for Looking so Guru:
I am making reference to the fact that any time a Russian is mentioned on this board that it is immediatley shot down because Russians dont fit Burkes mold and that they are pussies and self centred … one of my favourite Leafs of all time was Dmitri Yushkevich because of his heart and character, I remember hearing stories about him breaking fucking bones and the training staff would have to restrain him to stop him from going back on the ice. On the other end of the spectrum Alexander Mogilny was one of the most skilled players to ever wear a Leaf uniform, dont make assumptions and stereotype.
    .
Bottom line is you do whatever it takes to make the 29th place team better, if you can sign a very skilled top six forward for 2 mil a year you fucken do it because last time I checked we look like a fucken AHL team up front

You would think that Kessel, Phaneuf, Bozak, Versteeg or even Gunnarson would have more that a little value. Clearly they are not going anywhere but you think you could get a second round pick or something for them.

To add to the discussion Zherdev probably would not have signed in Toronto for less than $3.5M Pennsylvania 3.07% flat vs. Ontario just under 50% income tax. He would need just under $4M here to take home the same amount.

I think some people around here are going to be pleasantly surprised how quickly Kadri leapfrogs both Grabbo and Bozak into the number one centre position. Remember last year when we were all waiting for Kessel to arrive back from injury and when he did he immediately demonstrated that he was our most skilled offensive player? I think Kadri may have the JAM to pull off a similar trick this season. A player of his ilk should be able to transfer his skills and confidence to the NHL level. He knows he is expected to earn a big role on this young team and I think he will conquer that challenge. The fact that he was sent back last season provided the fuel for his fire. My only concern is that it may take him a while to adjust to playing at a heavier weight than he is used to. He also needs some sizable players to play with to open up ice for him and provide protection. Burke is going to do everything possible to put the right pieces in place to help him develop and succeed. Yes it may appear at times that Burke is missing out on opportunities such as Kovalchuk and Zherdev but that shows that he is not willing to deviate from the plan. Exciting time to be a Leaf fan.

    @ REID:

I’d rather not have Gagne because I’d rather keep our forward lines younger (under 30). Plus, even though we are in much better shape to make a playoff run than we were last year, we cannot be considered as post first-round playoff competitive yet (for lack of a better way of describing it), nor, more importantly Stanley Cup competitive.

I’d rather have Kadri play 2nd-line centre or wing (with Grabo on Kadri’s line as 2nd-centre or winger) and move Kulemin or Versteeg to 1st-line wing and maybe gamble on slotting Hanson into the 3rd-line centre spot, with (ugh) Mitchell as 4th-line centre.

Oh yes, absolutely! Those guys you listed very much have more than a little value, no question there. I was just referring to guys who would likely be traded and none of those five guys fit into that category, not even Gunnarsson, IMO.

    @ KGL24:
We have to have some sort of veteran presence with our forwards and Gagne has the playoff experience and an Olympic gold medal. Personally to get a player that can play on our first line with that kind of talent for nothing at all, I’m all for it.

CapSpace? And please no we demote Finger and Trade Kaberle for youth. BB already said he would give Finger a chance to make the team out of camp.

If we sign Gagne we would have to move a couple of players to stay under the cap.

Yep but if BB worked a deal with Finger for Gagne, then Philly could put Finger on waivers and give us some cap space. Problem is Philly has no cap space either and if he’s not claimed creates problems.

Thats one reason why the salary cap is completely fucked!! It gives teams that play in a State/Province with low income tax rates an unfair advantage.
The CBA definetly needs to be changed to reflect this discrepancy!!

I would love to add Gagne to the Leafs. He would be a fine option instead of Kovi. Wayne Gretzky once said that Gagne had the highest hockey IQ in the NHL before the Olympics in 2006. I think that says a lot. He’s not over the hill at 30. Sure he’s injury prone, but that could also be due to the style they play in Philly. I think he’d thrive in Toronto to be honest. Top line with Kessel, 2nd line with Gagne…. sign me up!!

If we could by some miracle pull Gagne off waivers we would be idiots not to take him. His salary may be a little high compared to his production last year, but he is a “player”. The guy has a tonne of skill and at 30 he still has a few years left in his “prime”.

IMHO if a player like this is gifted to you then you take him and you figure out the cap issues afterwards.

I don’t see how our mgmt would pass on this guy. We are desperate for top 6 fwds and I don’t think you will find many hockey people who would say Gagne is NOT a top 6 guy.

Also, whose to say that we couldn’t pick this guy up and then trade him ourselves? Maybe another team wants him but doesn’t want to trade a cheap prospect or draft pick to Philly to get him, therefore not giving Philly the kind of deal they need to make the cap situation work, whereas we would have that ability – depending on the deal. Either way it is a good asset.
