Let’s Leave A Spot for the Kids: by Caleb Dallman

I rarely post much in the debate after posts on MLHS, but I try to read most of them.  It seems like a lot of people are waiting on a trade, speculating what we could be getting and for what parts.  No one was able to predict the Phaneuf trade, nor the Giguere trade.  The Versteeg trade also came with few rumours leaking out.

So where does that leave us?  Is this speculating even worth it when Brian Burke seems to always be able to pull a rabbit out of his hat and stun the fanbase?  Sure, speculating is fun, and there are certainly some players and prospects that are more enticing than others, but in reality, how many of you guys called the Phaneuf trade?

As die-hard Leafs fans, we want the team to get better;  Faster, meaner, harder to play against.  We all want a Bobby Ryan, or a Kovalchuk, or a Jamie Neal, but how likely are we to grab these players?  Sure, we’ll probably get something pretty good for a Kaberle trade, but when we succeeded last year after the trades, it was the kids, with the influence of Phaneuf and Giguere which set our sails in the right direction.

With the roster we have now, we can create make-shift line combos.

LW C RW
Kulemin Bozak Kessel
———— Grabovski Versteeg
Sjostrom ————- Armstrong
Orr Mitchell Brown

You could argue against this lineup.  Maybe Kadri makes the team (I certainly hope so).  Perhaps Grabovski gets shipped out, maybe Kulemin would be better as a 2nd or 3rd liner.  Maybe Mitchell with centre the 3rd line and Hanson will step up as a 4th liner, or 3rd liner.

People are so quick to want to fill these holes with veteran presences.  Why can’t we put some of our kids in?

What if Caputi, who has been working out extremely hard and is trying to make the team next year really steps up?  What if D’Amigo surprises us all in camp like he did in the world juniors?  Is this the year for Stefanovich to finally get his head together and make the team?

There is a pack of hungry dogs ready to chomp at the meat of the Leaf’s Roster:

Sweatt, D. Mitchell, Ross, McKegg, and others are working hard for their chance.

Why would we want a veteran following the money compared to a kid who knows he’s got to work hard to get in, and stay in?

Our successes last year was when the veterans moved out and gave way to the kids.  Let’s see what the kids can do.

    @ rpearce76:
So here’s the question then: Do you want Grabovski on your third line or Mitchell/Hanson? I don’t think Primeau did anything last year to warrant feeling good losing Grabovski about.
    Remember
that the Leafs tried Hanson at centre, wing, and even on the Frat line to try and get him going; if he doesnt
start to produce soon he’ll be a career Marlie and 4th line replacement.
If we dont keep Grabovski next year, it needs to be for a real 3rd line centre. That is, unless we want/expect Kadri to play with the Marlies…so i don’t think Savard is coming here.
    ANYway
I’m hoping Burke spreads our toughness (Brown/Orr/Armstrong) across three lines in that order. And i’m also expecting a fourth winger/player to be acquired to add some kind of toughness/roughness to our first line – or put Kulemin there and start calling him Gary Roberts who (as one of my top 3 players of all-time) reminds me alot of the great characteristics GaBo brought to the table in working blue collar down-low…but with some talent and hands.

Brian Burke, president and general manager of the Toronto Maple Leafs, announced Wednesday that the club has agreed to terms on a two-year entry level contract with free agent forward Marcel Mueller.

Mueller, 22, appeared in 53 games with the Cologne Sharks of the German Elite League (DEL) in 2009-10, registering the team-lead in game-winning goals (6), power-play goals (8), assists (32) and penalty minutes (122), while finishing second in goals (24), shorthanded goals (4) and points (56). In 198 games in the German Elite League with the Sharks and Berlin Polar Bears from 2005-06 to 2009-10, the 6-3, 220-pound winger recorded 43 goals and 61 assists for 104 points with 316 penalty minutes.

Mueller, a native of Berlin, Germany, represented his country at the 2010 Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver where he played four games and registered two assists and 12 penalty minutes. He also participated in the 2010 World Championships in Cologne, collecting one goal and one assist for two points. Over his career he has played for Germany at numerous international championships, including the World Junior Championships in 2007.

why not? hes not too old, puts up points, good canadian guy, gets concussions, is a LW like we need. anybody wanna play the “one of these things dont belong” game lol. seriously tho guys who gives a shit about a concussion, if we can get this guy we really have to, he would make the team much better IMO and if he stayed healthy all year then we could easily resign him to a cheaper contract for short term again, combine that with shedding ourselves of Fingers contract if thats how it goes down and we’re golden

    @ 4evrblue:

For Finger yes I’d do it, but how many more yr’s is Fingers contract (not sure) if its more than one Philly won’t do it. Cause the buyout will be more. If its waiver no because we will be in a position of weakness to deal Kabs as teams would know we have to make a move to get under the cap. So maybe a prospect and how many contracts do we have open, we are at 49 or 50 now I believe, so we need to move a player, here’s another game we can play, who’s the oldest on the team. Giguere…then Kabs (I believe) who where trying to move, what doesn’t fit.

    @ 4evrblue:

One of very few German natives who averages more than a point a game in the DEL. Not bad considering he is 22 and the DEL is infamous for burying native talent under endless reams of veteran NHLers and career minor leaguers. Still, he’ll almost certainly be an AHLer next season unless he is spectacular in camp.

The 4th line of Orr – Mitchell – Brown is ok but a bit of a waste for Mitchell who can skate. For me I’d like to see Rosehill involved.
Imagine playing Chicago, on cue Orr, Rosehill and Brown kick the living crap out of Toews Hossa and Kane and shake them up pretty nasty. We don’t have to worry about the impending penalty because without those three Chicago has Sharp, a bag of pucks and one of the sexy ladies that clean away the lose ice and Phaneuf can have her on the penalty kill.

What do you reckon. plan or what??!!

And that his second idol is Dany Heatley. Hmm, I think maybe he meant to sign with the Habs!

    @ Tim:
Fingers contract is for 2 years and I agree that they probably wouldn’t take him unless they had another trade lined up for either him or another one of the D they currently have. This is definitely possible, not likely by possible. Yeah, Kabs is the oldest next to Giggy but you can’t win with all youth, there has to be a vet or two on your team and whether you think its true or not i’m sure that Kabs could teach our young captain a thing or two to guide him on his way in this media crazed city. Gagne (a cup winner) could also do the same for our young forward corp, if i’m not mistake Colton Orr is our oldest forward right now, to me thats not acceptable leadership up front. Giggy is guiding Gus, Kabs can help guide Schenn, Gunner etc, and Gagne could guide our forwards. I’d give up Grabs for him straight up right now also, that would put the Flyers alot closer to the cap limit and would make our top 6 much better. If we buried Finger it would all fit nicely for us also. We’d still have Bozak, Kadri, Hanson, Mitchell and possibly the newly signed Mueller down the middle if he makes it out of camp. I’d be happy with that.

    @ 4evrblue:
I agree but I would prefer to see someone else guide the troops up front. I’m not against the Gagne idea but I’ve posted several reason why I’m not big on him. If he has a big year do we re-sign him and will he take a pay cut? If they don’t, does it send the wrong message to the youth moving forward especially if they make the playoffs. There’s a lot of variables when adding a player, I’m sure Burke will do whats best for the team, if it means adding Gagne then he will try.
